Abstract

Indonesia stands as one of the nine malaria-endemic countries in Southeast Asia with a total of 443,530 cases in 2022. Eastern Indonesia is listed as an area with high malaria endemicity and the Indonesian government has set a target of eliminating malaria by 2030. From 2010 to 2014, the number of malaria cases decreased but stagnated until 2020 and have continued to increase. Stagnation may occur as a result of many non-medical treatment-seeking behaviors. The aim of this systematic review was to provide a summary and overview of malaria treatment-seeking behavior among communities in several regions in Indonesia. The searches were conducted through four databases (Cochrane, PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect) using medical subject headings (MeSH) "treatment-seeking behavior" OR "health-seeking behavior" AND "malaria" AND "Indonesia". This systematic review was limited to studies conducted in Indonesia that were published between 2013 and 2023 using either a quantitative or qualitative approach. Out of 2831 studies, a total of thirteen studies were included. The pattern of seeking malaria treatment varied between doing nothing or no action, self-treatment (purchasing drugs at pharmacies and consuming leftover medicines), traditional medicine, and medical treatment (public health facilities or malaria control clinics). Those behaviors are attributed to education level, socioeconomic level, occupation, distance from home to health facilities, geographical conditions, and people's perceptions of malaria and antimalarial medicines. There is still a range of malaria treatment-seeking behavior outside of recommended medical treatment in communities in several regions in Indonesia. The phenomenon of medical pluralism and syncretism requires approaches from various sectors in order to achieve a malaria-free Indonesia by 2030.

Abstract

Background: Durio zibethinus (durian) contains secondary metabolites with antibacterial potency, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and glycosides. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producing countries of durian, yet the thorny part of the fruit rind often ends up as waste. Investigations of durian rind for its antimicrobial activity will maximize the benefits and prevent waste accumulation. Objective: In this experimental study, we analyzed the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of durian rind against extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli and K. pneumoniae in vitro. Methods: This study used a one-group posttest-only design. The disc diffusion method for antimicrobial susceptibility test was used to test the ethanolic extract of durian rind against ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae, each with six experimental repetitions to observe the inhibition zone produced around discs containing the extracts at various concentrations (12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 80%, and 100%). Results: Ethanolic extract of durian rind showed an inhibition zone against ESBL-producing E. coli at the extract concentration of 50%, with an average inhibition zone of 3.57 mm. The inhibition zone was also observed against ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae at the extract concentration of 75%, with an average inhibition zone of 3.73 mm. Conclusions: The ethanolic extract of durian rind showed inhibition zones against ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae, showing its potential antimicrobial activity in vitro.

Abstract

Until now, there has been a tendency for dengue fever patients to increase, and its transmission has become one of Indonesia's most common public health problems. Getting rid of mosquito nest eradication (MNE) with the 3M Plus Movement regularly, which includes draining water reservoirs, burying used items, and closing water reservoirs, which make it harder for mosquitoes to breed, can stop the spread of dengue. Even though this disease can attack all groups, several studies have shown that children and teenagers are more susceptible to dengue fever, so it is essential to make efforts to increase understanding and education for school-aged children, including high school students and teachers, who must work together to prevent dengue fever. As a result, the community service team from the Medical Faculty of Universitas Sumatera Utara carried out this activity using an outreach strategy that included questions and answers with students about MNE, Clean and Healthy Living Behavior, and other topics as well as the actual implementation of 3M Plus. A good understanding of MNE among students and teachers allows for the formation of awareness of MNE's significance in the school environment, which is the outcome of this activity.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: indeks massa tubuh, kualitas hidup, lanjut usia, lingkar pinggang, status gizi   ABSTRACT Introduction: Aging is a complex process encompassing many changes in physiological, psychological, social, and also nutritional aspects. Olfactory sense, gustatory sense, mastication, swallowing process, and gastrointestinal function are nutritional problems commonly found in elderly that can influence their quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the association between nutritional status and quality of life in elderly. Methods: This study is an analytical study with a cross-sectional design, using primary data from questionnaires and nutritional status. Nutritional status was assessed by measuring body mass index and waist circumference. The sample was selected by using the purposive sampling method. Variables were shown in categorical variable. The association between variables was analyzed using Fisher exact. Results: Analysis of 28 respondents, the p-value was 0,596; 0,971; 0,935; and 0,817 (p > 0.05) for association between body mass index and physical health, psychological, social, environmental domain, respectively. Regarding association between waist circumference and quality of life, the p-value was 0,886; 1,000; 0,599; dan 1,000 (p >0,05) for physical health, psychological, social, environmental domain, respectively. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship found between nutritional status (body mass index and waist circumference) and quality of life of elderly. Keywords: body mass index, elderly, nutritional status, quality of life, waist circumference
