Abstract

This study explores the integration of Indonesian and the Maumere local language in academic learning, particularly in the Indonesian Language course at Universitas Muhammadiyah Maumere. The research is grounded in concerns over the weakening of local linguistic identity within higher education and the dominance of monolingual academic practices that often marginalize students’ cultural backgrounds. The objective of this study is to analyze how the integration of local language and cultural texts can strengthen students’ literacy skills, linguistic competence, and local identity awareness. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with students and lecturers, and document analysis of learning materials and student assignments. The findings reveal that the use of Maumere language elements such as traditional narratives, expressions, and cultural concepts facilitates deeper comprehension, encourages critical literacy, and enhances students’ engagement in academic discourse. The integration strategy also supports students’ ability to bridge everyday language practices with formal academic Indonesian. This study implies that culturally responsive and bilingual oriented learning can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy in higher education, particularly in multilingual contexts, while simultaneously contributing to the preservation of local languages and the development of inclusive academic literacy.

Abstract

Academic literacy is a crucial competence in Indonesian language learning as it supports the development of critical thinking, academic reading, and writing skills. However, Indonesian language instruction is often disconnected from students’ cultural backgrounds, resulting in less meaningful learning experiences. This study aims to describe the integration of Maumere local cultural texts in Indonesian language learning and to analyze their contribution to strengthening academic literacy based on local wisdom. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with lecturers and students, and analysis of instructional documents. The findings reveal that Maumere local cultural texts were integrated through the use of folktales, traditional expressions, and reflective as well as argumentative writing tasks. This integration contributed to the improvement of students’ critical reading skills, academic argumentation, and reflective literacy. Moreover, local cultural texts functioned as pedagogical capital that bridged students’ cultural experiences with academic language practices. The study concludes that integrating Maumere local cultural texts strengthens academic literacy while affirming students’ cultural identity. Therefore, Indonesian language learning should adopt a contextual approach grounded in local wisdom.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of local language integration as a pedagogical strategy in strengthening academic literacy and shaping students’ identities in multilingual higher education contexts. The study is grounded in the sociolinguistic reality that many students continue to use local languages in their daily lives, while academic learning predominantly relies on formal Indonesian, which is often abstract and normative. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with lecturers and students, and document analysis. The findings reveal that local language integration functions as a cognitive, affective, and cultural bridge in academic learning. Local languages are employed as a medium for initial meaning-making, conceptual discussion, and cultural reflection before students develop ideas in academic Indonesian. This practice enhances student participation, strengthens academic literacy, and reinforces local identity within academic spaces. The study concludes that local languages are not obstacles but valuable pedagogical resources. Therefore, their integration should be systematically incorporated into higher education curricula to promote inclusive, contextual, and linguistically just learning environments.

Abstract

This study investigates code-switching strategies between Indonesian and the Maumere local language in academic Indonesian language learning at the university level. In many higher education contexts, the dominance of standard Indonesian as the sole medium of instruction often creates cognitive, linguistic, and cultural distance for students who come from strong local language backgrounds. This qualitative study aims to describe the forms, pedagogical functions, and academic implications of Maumere–Indonesian code-switching in classroom interaction. Employing a case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with lecturers and students, and analysis of learning documents. The findings reveal that code-switching occurs systematically at the opening of lessons, during the explanation of abstract concepts, and in small-group discussions. The Maumere language functions as a cognitive and affective bridge that facilitates comprehension, increases student participation, and strengthens academic literacy. The study concludes that pedagogically controlled code-switching supports additive bilingualism and contributes positively to inclusive, contextual, and culturally responsive academic learning in multilingual higher education settings.

Abstract

Students in multilingual higher education contexts often face linguistic and identity challenges when engaging with formal and normative academic Indonesian. In such settings, translanguaging emerges as a natural and strategic practice that allows students to draw on their full linguistic repertoires, including local languages, to construct meaning and negotiate academic understanding. This study aims to examine students’ translanguaging practices and their contribution to the formation of academic identity in Indonesian language learning at the university level. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with students and lecturers, and document analysis of learning materials and students’ academic assignments. The findings reveal that translanguaging functions as both a cognitive and affective strategy that facilitates conceptual understanding, enhances participation, and strengthens students’ academic confidence. Moreover, translanguaging plays a crucial role in shaping an inclusive and hybrid academic identity, positioning local languages as legitimate pedagogical resources rather than obstacles. These findings highlight the need to recognize translanguaging within language policy and curriculum design to support equitable and context-sensitive academic learning in multilingual higher education.

Abstract

In today's digital era, social media has become an integral part of everyday life, especially for younger generations such as students. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook facilitate fast and interactive communication, but often encourage the use of informal language such as abbreviations or emojis. This contrasts with the demands of the academic world. This study aims to analyze the influence of social media use on students' language styles in the academic world. The research method used was quantitative, namely observation. Observations were conducted to determine students' communication patterns on digital platforms (such as class WhatsApp group chats and comments on social media). The results showed a strong tendency to use slang, non-standard abbreviations, and code-mixing, carried over from social media habits into formal academic contexts. This phenomenon has contributed to the erosion of the boundaries between informal and formal language styles among students. This study concludes the need to strengthen formal language literacy to maintain professional communication in the academic world.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Indonesian Language learning in higher education as a foundation for developing students’ academic literacy within an Outcome Based Education (OBE) framework. The research is motivated by serious concerns regarding students’ low academic writing ability, weak critical reading skills, and inconsistent use of academic language, which hinder the formation of academic culture at universities. The objective of this study is to describe and interpret the learning process, challenges, and outcomes of Indonesian Language courses in fostering academic literacy. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach conducted intensively over a three-week period. Data were collected through classroom observations, in depth interviews with lecturers and students, and document analysis of lesson plans, teaching materials, and students’ academic assignments. The findings reveal that although the course design conceptually aligns with OBE principles, its classroom implementation has not fully emphasized reflective processes, critical engagement, and consistent academic language practice. Learning activities tend to focus on task completion rather than on the development of academic thinking processes. The study implies that Indonesian Language learning should be strengthened through reflective, contextual, and process oriented strategies to enhance students’ academic literacy and academic identity. These findings contribute theoretically to studies on academic literacy and practically to the improvement of Indonesian Language instruction in higher education.

Abstract

This study is grounded in the growing concern over the weakening of students’ critical literacy skills and cultural awareness in higher education, particularly in the context of rapid digitalization and the dominance of global discourse. Local cultural traditions, especially those rooted in Maumere society, have not been optimally utilized as meaningful academic literacy resources in Indonesian language learning. This research aims to explore how Maumere cultural traditions can be integrated as sources of critical literacy to strengthen students’ interpretative, analytical, and reflective abilities. Employing a qualitative research approach, data were collected through classroom observations, in depth interviews with students and lecturers, and documentation of learning materials in Indonesian language courses at Universitas Muhammadiyah Maumere. The findings reveal that traditional texts, narratives, rituals, and oral expressions from Maumere culture contain rich linguistic, ethical, and symbolic meanings that support the development of critical reading and writing skills. The integration of cultural texts encourages students to engage more deeply with academic discourse while simultaneously reinforcing local identity and cultural sensitivity. This study implies that culturally grounded literacy practices not only enhance academic competencies but also contribute to the preservation of local wisdom within higher education learning frameworks.

Abstract

Indonesian language education plays a strategic role in strengthening national identity and preserving cultural values amid the pressures of globalization. In the global era, the dominance of foreign languages, digital media, and transnational cultures poses challenges to the existence of national languages and local cultural identities. This study aims to analyze the role of Indonesian language education as an instrument for reinforcing national identity and cultural awareness in formal educational settings. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a literature review approach, examining scientific journals, policy documents, and relevant educational studies published within the last five years. Data were analyzed through content analysis to identify patterns, themes, and conceptual relationships related to language education and cultural identity. The findings reveal that Indonesian language education not only functions as a medium of communication but also serves as a vehicle for transmitting national values, cultural narratives, and collective identity. Learning materials that integrate local wisdom, literature, and cultural texts significantly contribute to students’ cultural awareness and national character development. Furthermore, Indonesian language education plays an important role in fostering critical literacy, cultural resilience, and a sense of belonging among learners in a globalized context. The study implies that strengthening Indonesian language education through curriculum development, contextual learning, and teacher competence enhancement is essential to sustaining national identity and cultural continuity in the era of globalization.

Abstract

The development of academic writing skills among university students remains a serious challenge in higher education, particularly in Indonesian language courses that are often perceived as theoretical and procedural. This study aims to reconstruct Indonesian language learning through an Outcome Based Education (OBE) approach to strengthen students’ scientific writing skills at Universitas Muhammadiyah Maumere. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with students and lecturers over a three-week period. The findings reveal that OBE based learning encourages clearer learning objectives, increases students’ awareness of academic writing standards, and fosters reflective and critical writing practices. Students demonstrated improved understanding of scientific text structures, argument development, and academic language conventions. Furthermore, the learning process shifted from teacher centered instruction to a more participatory and student oriented model, allowing students to actively construct knowledge through observation, discussion, and writing practice. The study also highlights that the integration of contextual learning and continuous feedback plays a crucial role in enhancing students’ confidence and motivation in academic writing. These findings imply that OBE based Indonesian language instruction can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to cultivate academic literacy, critical thinking, and responsible scholarly attitudes among university students. The study recommends broader implementation of OBE principles in language education to support sustainable improvement in higher education learning outcomes.
