Abstract

In this digital era, students often lack motivation in conventional English learning. Although ice-breaking is found to be helpful, conventional methods can feel monotonous for students who are familiar with digital technology, and the impact of digital ice-breaking has not been widely explored. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of digital ice-breaking (using platforms such as Bamboozle, Kahoot! and Quizizz) on the learning motivation of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Diwek. A pre-experimental design with one pre-test/post-test group was used on 31 eighth-grade students in class C. Motivation was measured using a questionnaire before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the digital ice-breaking treatment. The results showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.009) between the pre-test motivation scores (mean = 30.29) and post-test scores (mean = 33.36). The Paired Samples T-test (t = -2.790) and moderate effect size (Cohen's d = -0.501) confirmed the positive impact of the treatment. Digital ice-breaking proved to be effective in increasing students' motivation in learning English.

Abstract

Adult learners have their own learning styles to acquire information and skills. Therefore, this survey study was carried out to determine adult learners’ preferred learning styles based on Kolb’s model and how learner learning style and demographic profile are related. The sample of this study consisted of 39 Indonesian and 32 Malaysian adult learners aged 20 to 54 years old. The instrument used was Kolb’s learning style questionnaire. The questionnaire answers aimed to ascertain which quadrant the students belong to. Meanwhile, the chi-square test for independence was used to determine the relationship between adult learning styles and their demographics. More than half of the participants in this study were found to be reflectors, followed by pragmatists, theorists, and activists. Adult learning styles were also significantly correlated with nationality and educational attainment. However, gender and current employment had no significant relationship with adult learning styles. Expectantly, the results of this present study can be a reference for educators to make learning equally enjoyable and effective for those four types of adult learners.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of using the Round Robin strategy to improve the speaking skills of Grade VII D students at SMPN 1 Jombang in the academic year 2024/2025. The study employs a quantitative approach with a one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design. The sample consisted of students from Class VII D. Data were collected through speaking tests administered before and after the implementation of the Round Robin strategy and analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The results showed an increase in the average speaking scores 72,28 from pre-test to 88,13 scores post-test. The t-test revealed a significance value of less than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between students’ speaking ability before and after using the Round Robin strategy. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Round Robin strategy is effective in enhancing students’ speaking skills.
