Abstract

This research aims to gain an overview and constructive, pedagogical, and applicable feedbacks from stakeholders, both internal and external, of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program that has been implemented so far in every study program within the Faculty of Language and Literature (FLL) of a private university in Malang. The study applied a descriptive quantitative method with questionnaires as the data collection technique. Respondents include students (N=150), lecturers (N=25), academic staff within the faculty (N=7), non-university partners (N=15), and university partners (N=4). The results show that the MBKM program implemented at the FLL was relevant to what was expected by all the stakeholders, with a total score of 3.38 on the scale between 1 (very unsatisfactory) and 4 (very satisfactory), which means that the satisfaction level of the MBKM implementation at the FLL was satisfactory. Several obstacles were also identified concerning the MBKM program implementation as feedback for quality improvement in the future. Abstract

Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) is quite essential to improve EFL learners’ speaking ability. It can be done successfully by means of the basic concept of TPRS known as comprehensible input in second language acquisition (SLA). This paper presents a study on learners’ speaking ability through TPRS making use of three important steps; Showing, Telling, and Reading. This is a quantitative study using quasi-experimental as the two intact groups are used; experimental and control group. The data are obtained from pre-test, post-test and questionnaires viewed from both students’ and teachers’ perspective. The data from pre-test and post-test are analyzed by using independent sample t-test. The experimental and control are ascertained to be homogenous in term of English performance from the pre-test analysis. The post-test are carried out from both groups after the treatment and the the result of the test are compared in order to prove if the null hypothesis is rejected indicating that there is significant difference performance between the two groups. The result of the study is expected to be beneficial for English teachers, EFL learners, and further researchers.

Abstract

Mastering speaking skills poses a challenge for young learners, prompting the search for innovative solutions such as using educational tools. This study explores the impact of TikTok vlogs on the speaking skills of young learners, considering its potential as an educational tool. This study was conducted at one elementary school in Indonesia where the proficiency in speaking skills remained low. Participants of the present study were taken from 54 fourth-grade elementary students and the research utilized pre-test and post-test data analyzed through SPSS 21.00 using an Independent Sample t-test and N-Gain Test. The post-test data showed a significant result since the significance value of the post-test was 0.000 less than the significance level, 0.005, and this made the null hypothesis rejected. The N-gain score further confirmed its effectiveness, with a value of 58.76, compared to the control class's 18.42. These results highlight TikTok Vlog's positive impact, showcasing its potential in modern language education and advocating for its integration into teaching practices. Such compelling outcomes underscore the promising implications of integrating TikTok vlogs in language education, signaling a need for its broader implementation to bolster young learners' speaking skills in educational settings.

Abstract

Considering the challenges in integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into language teaching in Indonesia’s remote areas, the perspectives of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers on this development have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to address questions regarding the extent of their awareness of ICT advancements, their integration of ICT into English language teaching (ELT), and their concerns about their ICT skills and knowledge. Data were collected through an online survey of 50 EFL teachers working in remote areas of West Kalimantan and East Nusa Tenggara. The survey included seven closed-ended and four open-ended questions focusing on their attitudes toward ICT development in language teaching and their adoption of ICT practices. The results indicate that the participants hold positive perceptions of ICT development in language teaching and, despite various limitations, make efforts to integrate ICT into their teaching practices. However, they also expressed significant concerns about their skills and knowledge of ICT. These findings highlight the need for supporting facilities and targeted training to enhance ICT integration in language teaching for EFL teachers in remote areas.

Abstract

This research describes the use of Conversation Diary as a strategy in increasing students’ English speaking skill and discovers the decreasing of students’ anxiety in performing English speaking. This research is done in Classroom Action Research (CAR) within 2 cycles. Each of the cycle is started by assessing classroom problems, and continues with planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Each cycle has four meetings to accomplish. The participants of this study were 30 students. They got Conversation Diary treatment during eight weeks. Test 1 and test 2 were conducted to get numerical data while interview, observation checklist, and questionnaire were used to get verbal data needed. The finding informed that cycle 1 failed. It was because most of students’ vocabulary and grammar understanding were still low, caused by length and frequency of time which was too short. On the other hand, from verbal information data, it is found that the students’ behaviour has changed. However, cycle 2 is still needed. Cycle 2 showed students’ behaviour were increased. The students’ score test 3 reached minimum score. In conclusion, this study proved that Conversation Diary could improve the students’ speaking skill better and help decreasing the students’ anxiety. With enough length of time, it would gain better result.

Abstract

This study explores English language learners’ perceptions of bimodal subtitles‒simultaneous audio and text in the same language‒as a tool for developing speaking skills. While previous research has predominantly focused on the benefits of subtitles for receptive skills such as listening and vocabulary acquisition, limited attention has been paid to their influence on productive skills like speaking. Adopting a qualitative approach, this study gathers learner insights (N=62) through structured surveys and open-ended responses to examine how subtitled audiovisual materials shape learners’ confidence, pronunciation accuracy, and fluency. Five open-ended questions were grouped into thirty-six thematic EFLs’ responses (N = 532). Findings reveal that learners perceive bimodal subtitles as beneficial in enhancing speech production by offering real-time lexical and phonological reinforcement. Participants also reported an increase in their confidence when practicing spoken English. These perceptions align with prior research on multimodal learning and suggest that bimodal subtitles can be an accessible and effective scaffolding tool in language instruction. The study advocates for greater integration of subtitled media in pedagogical design, particularly in online and self-directed learning environments.
