Abstract

Fish scales are leftover fishery products that are not utilized optimally. Fish scales contain chemical compounds such as organic protein, namely chitin, which is a derivative of chitosan. Chitosan can be used in various sectors such as the food industry, health, agricultural and cosmetics. This study aims to extract chitosan from the scales of farmed and marine fish, as well as to determine the ratio of the yield of chitosan to types of marine fish and cultivated fish. This research was conducted from July to August 2023. The fish scale samples used were tilapia (cultivated fish) and snapper (sea-caught fish) obtained from the Traditional Market and Fish Auction Place in Bengkulu City. The process of making chitosan is carried out in the Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Hazairin, SH University. The process of extracting chitosan from fish scales goes through three stages, namely deproteination, demineralization and deacetylation. The results showed that the water, ash and protein content of fish scales were different, namely tilapia (19.05%; 20.15%; 53.01%) and snapper. (10.78%; 43.54%; 28.49). Results of Tilapia Chitosan. (13.22%) and snapper (7.74%). Several chitosan characteristics such as color, shape and odor meet commercial chitosan standards.

Abstract

Seagrass has an important role in coastal ecosystems. Seagrass is a primary producer and constituent of habitats and ecosystems that support life on coral reefs and mangroves or coastal land The distribution of seagrass in Indonesia is quite extensive, covering almost all water areas in Indonesia. Information regarding the distribution of seagrass in the waters of Enggano Island is still limited, so a study is needed to provide information regarding the distribution of seagrass in this area. This study aims to identify the types of seagrass and variations in their density and cover on Enggano Island, Bengkulu. This research was conducted in March 2022 in Kaana Village, Enggano, Bengkulu. Seagrass data collection method using purposive sampling method. Sampling was carried out at four stations, where each station was repeated three times. Seagrass was identified at the research location; its density and closure were calculated. Measurement of water quality is done in situ. The results of this study indicate that three species of seagrass were found, namely Enhalus acoroides, Cymodocea rotundata and Halodule uninervis. However, the types of C. rotundata and H. Uninervis were scattered in all research stations. The highest cover was found at station 1 with 86% cover while the lowest cover was found at station 3 with 16% cover. There are variations in composition and density at each research station, this shows that there is environmental influence and there is not an even distribution of seagrass in the area

Abstract

Abstract

The rapid growth of the aquaculture industry and the limited availability of conventional fish feed have driven the need for alternative feed sources, particularly in intensive fish farming systems. This study, conducted from May 15 to July 5, 2017, in Bengkulu, aimed to determine the optimal feeding rate for gourami (Osphronemus goramy) using artificial fish pellets. A completely randomized design was applied, testing four feeding rates based on fish biomass: D1 (2%), D2 (3%), D3 (4%), and D4 (5%) per day. Gouramis (3.2–3.3 g, 1.1–1.3 cm) were reared in 24 plastic containers (50×30×27 cm3) under controlled water quality conditions. The results showed that a 5% feeding rate (D4) yielded the best outcomes in absolute length (1.97 ± 0.13 cm), specific growth rate (2.78 ± 0.17% day⁻¹), feed conversion ratio (3.72 ± 0.11), feed efficiency (26.85 ± 0.30%), and survival rate (88.89%). Statistical analysis revealed that different feeding rates significantly influenced absolute length, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio, while feed efficiency and survival rate remained unaffected. Despite the promising growth performance at higher feeding rates, the high feed conversion ratio and low feed efficiency highlight the need for improved feed formulations. Future research should focus on optimizing corn cobs as a complementary ingredient to enhance feed efficiency, minimize waste, and contribute to sustainable aquaculture. Incorporating corn cob-based feeds could improve waste management and provide economic benefits to fish farmers.
