Abstract

Abstract

The microalga Nannochloropsis sp. is a potential bioactive source with various applications in the pharmaceutical and health industries. This study aims to identify its chemical composition and evaluate its pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antihyperlipidemic, and cytotoxic properties. The method involves a literature review of relevant and recent scientific articles using specific keywords. The results indicate that Nannochloropsis sp. is rich in bioactive compounds, such as unsaturated fatty acids, flavonoids, and phenolics, which contribute to its biological activities. This microalga has been shown to effectively inhibit pathogenic bacterial growth, reduce blood sugar, cholesterol, and lipid levels, and possess potential anticancer activity. The study concludes that Nannochloropsis sp. has promising prospects as a natural raw material source for modern drug development. Further research is recommended to explore the mechanisms of its bioactive compounds and to develop formulations for products based on this microalga.

Abstract

The tuberculosis (TB) vaccine contains a weakened form of the TB-causing agent. Currently, much research has focused on developing an effective and safe TB vaccine through genetic engineering. This review aims to analyze genetic engineering techniques in the production of tuberculosis (TB) vaccines. The analysis was conducted by gathering research data from various studies published between 2014-2024, available in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, using relevant keywords. Based on the literature review, several innovative methods in genetic engineering were identified, such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), in silico methods, multi-epitope vaccine development, and protein fusion-based vaccine development. Although there are challenges related to vaccine stability and clinical safety testing, innovations in genetic engineering technology hold the promise of significant progress in developing a more effective and durable TB vaccine. Among these methods, protein fusion-based and multi-epitope vaccines show the most promising potential in terms of effectiveness and long-lasting immune response.

Abstract

Biotechnology involves the use of microorganisms supported by technology to produce goods and services, a practice that has been around for thousands of years. The application of biotechnology includes processing fermented beverage products. Kombucha is a traditional fermented tea drink that is carbonated and has a slightly sweet and sour taste. Butterfly pea flower contains anthocyanins, which act as antioxidants and antibacterial agents. Sugar serves as a nutrient for Scoby, helping with the fermentation process. This article review uses a scientific literature study, with data collected from Google Scholar, referencing 15 journals from the last 10 years. Scoby nutrients can include granulated sugar, palm sugar, Baduy forest honey, stevia sugar, and Tropicana Slim sugar. Each nutrient is given at concentrations of 20%, 30%, and 40%. The test results show that providing nutrients at a concentration of 40% produced a larger inhibition zone.
