Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pepper plantation system in Bengkulu during the East India Company (EIC) period from 1685 to 1825, with a particular focus on colonial exploitation mechanisms, labor dynamics, and Bengkulu's integration into global pepper trade networks. The central questions examined include how the EIC constructed its pepper production system, mobilized and exploited labor, implemented colonial policies, and positioned Bengkulu within the global commodity trade. This research employs a historical research methodology encompassing the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, drawing on primary sources from the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) and Sumatra Factory Records, supplemented by relevant historiographical secondary literature. The study finds that the EIC constructed the pepper plantation system through three primary mechanisms: (1) monopoly agreements with local rulers that obligated each household to cultivate a minimum of 1,000 pepper vines; (2) the use of enslaved African laborers as the operational backbone of the plantation system, with their numbers reaching 1,121 in 1778; and (3) the deployment of British Residents in pepper-producing districts as instruments of colonial control. Bengkulu was integrated into global trade networks through two principal export routes   Fort Marlborough–India–London with annual export volumes reaching 453,600–907,200 kg to European markets during the eighteenth century. This study concludes that the EIC's plantation system in Bengkulu constituted a systematic and exploitative form of colonial capitalism, integrating the region into the world economy not for the benefit of its inhabitants, but for the commercial gain of European merchants as evidenced by the recurring resistance of the Bengkulu population throughout the 140 years of EIC occupation.

Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a major topic in education, including the challenges and opportunities it offers in learning. This study aims to analyze the impact of AI use on the digital historical literacy of Generation Z History Education students. The approach used was qualitative field research. The study population was active sixth-semester undergraduate History Education students, with a sample of 32 respondents determined through purposive sampling based on the criterion of having used AI at least three times in completing history coursework. Data were collected through a questionnaire to measure the frequency of AI use and perceptions of four components of historical digital literacy (source verification, bias detection, contextual understanding, and multi-perspective synthesis). The results showed that although all respondents (100%) experienced an increase in learning efficiency, 71.9% of students experienced a decline in source verification skills, 65.6% in bias detection, 68.8% in multi-perspective synthesis, and 59.4% in understanding historical context. This study provides quantitative evidence that intensive AI use correlates with a shift from in-depth historical thinking to a less comprehensive understanding of history. Consequently, the use of AI in history learning needs to be critically guided and pedagogically integrated. Research recommendations include the need for lecturers to design source verification-based assignments with the help of AI, socialization of strategies to reduce dependence on AI, and the development of pedagogical models and depth of historical thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an Android-based application that uses an inquiry approach on solubility material and solubility products, and assesses its feasibility as an alternative source of independent learning for high school students. The approach used is the development research method, by choosing a development design using the ADDIE model. The result of this study is in the form of an Android-based application. The evaluation of the results of this development is based on the assessment of validators who show very good categories, with ideality reaching 86% according to the assessment of media experts, and 84.75% according to the assessment of material experts. Student responses to Android-based applications with an inquiry approach to solubility material and solubility results obtained a percentage of 93.22%. Based on the expert assessment and student responses, it can be concluded that the Android-based application that has been developed is worthy of being used as an independent learning resource for high school students.
