Abstract

ABSTRACT The composition of electric mosquito repellent contains the active ingredient d-allethrin which is a group of pyrethroids, metofluthrin, cyphenothrin which are very dangerous for health if used for a long period of time. Durian skin extract is a natural insecticide that can be an alternative ingredient as a substitute for chemicals from mosquito repellent products. This study aims to formulate an electric mosquito repellent preparation and to determine the ability of the preparation as a repellent. The preparation is made in four formulas, namely, F0 (0%), F1 (25%), F2 (35%) and F3 (45%). The preparation was then tested for physical properties including organoleptic, water content, density, weight uniformity, burning time test and repellent effectiveness. The results showed that the preparation met the parameters for testing physical properties. The effectiveness test using 25 mosquitoes exposed for 1 hour to the electric mat mosquito repellent preparation at F0, F1 and F2 did not meet the effectiveness value as a repellent because it was <80%, while at F3 it met the effectiveness value as a repellent of 82.7%. Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the effectiveness of 70% and 96% ethanol solvents in extracting saponin compounds from red seaweed (Eucheuma spinosum) from Panjang Beach, Bengkulu City. Saponin is a secondary metabolite that has important biological activities such as antioxidants, antimicrobials, and anticancer potential for the health sector. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method followed by quantitative analysis of UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 495 nm. The results showed that the crude drug had a drying loss value of 89.36%. The 70% ethanol solvent produced a higher extract yield (22.95%) compared to 96% ethanol (12.45%). However, the determination of saponin content showed different results; the 70% ethanol extract had a higher average content of 89.10% (891 mg DE/g) compared to 96% ethanol which was only 88.51% (885.1 mg DE/g). Statistical analysis of the independent sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.861 and 0.862 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant difference between the two solvents. It was concluded that 70% ethanol is a more optimal and selective solvent in extracting saponin compounds from E. spinosum for the purpose of standardizing natural active ingredients.

Abstract

Sea grapes (Caulerpa racemosa) are green algae that contain secondary metabolites, including saponins, which have potential as bioactive compounds. This study aimed to determine the saponin content in 70% and 96% ethanol extracts and to analyze the differences in saponin levels between the two solvents using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. This research was an experimental laboratory study involving sample preparation, extraction by maceration using 70% and 96% ethanol, qualitative saponin testing, and quantitative determination of saponin levels using the vanillin–sulfuric acid method. Measurements were carried out at a maximum wavelength of 495 nm using a standard calibration curve with concentrations of 20–100 ppm.The results showed that the saponin content in the 70% ethanol extract was 954.06 ± 11.0 mg QE/g, while in the 96% ethanol extract it was 938.06 ± 8.9 mg QE/g. Statistical analysis using an independent t-test indicated no significant difference between the two extracts (p > 0.05).In conclusion, both 70% and 96% ethanol solvents are capable of extracting saponins from Caulerpa racemosa, but there is no significant difference in the saponin content obtained.
