Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The wave of demonstrations involving massive student participation has raised a fundamental dilemma between child protection and the participation right. This research analyzes the paradox of government policies that disguise the prohibition on student demonstrations under the guise of child protection, despite the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) recognizing both protection and participation rights as equally binding obligations of the state. This research looks at what the government's doing and how it affects students. It uses information from documents, laws, and science journals. The research found three things. First, the government is being too harsh. It does not understand what students need. It thinks that keeping students quiet is the same as keeping them safe. Second, look at what happened in Soweto in 1976 and with the Fridays for Future movement; we can see that student movements can bring about changes. The Soweto movement helped end the treatment of students during apartheid, and Fridays for Future changed the way people think about climate change. These movements are similar to student movements in Indonesia. They are facing resistance from institutions, but they are working together and making a difference. Third, the government's harsh policies are not stopping student movements. Instead, these policies might be hurting the country's ability to pass on values to the next generation. If the government does not start letting students participate and learn about being citizens in a safe way, it could hurt the country's ability to have a strong civil society.

Abstract

Civic disposition plays a crucial role in shaping students into responsible and active citizens, but its characteristics in the school environment require further study. This study aims to analyze the civic disposition of junior high school students and the factors influencing its development. A quantitative survey method was used involving 120 seventh-grade students from three public junior high schools in Magelang, Indonesia. A structured questionnaire measured five dimensions of civic disposition: responsibility, participation, politeness, empathy, and patience. The results showed that responsibility, politeness, and empathy were in the high category, while participation was in the medium category, and patience was the lowest dimension. These findings suggest that although students possess good ethical and social awareness, they still need encouragement to participate more actively in civic activities and to increase their patience in social interactions. Civic education should prioritize the balanced development of responsibility, participation, and patience to strengthen students' overall civic character. Recommendations are provided for strengthening learning programs that foster moral character and encourage active student involvement.

Abstract

This study contributes theoretically to conflict resolution and Civic Education by demonstrating how local wisdom can operationalize deliberative democracy principles in multicultural settings. Employing a qualitative descriptive design with 15 purposively selected participants, the research explores conflict resolution based on the Malay "Tunjuk Ajar" among the Malay people in Riau Province. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The principal findings reveal that conflict resolution is operationalized through "duduk berundiang" to achieve consensus, facilitated by the Riau Malay Customary Institution. The process predominantly employs integrating, compromising, and obliging conflict management styles, embodying the core values of deliberation, consensus, truth, justice, responsibility, and social concern. The novelty lies in its explicit integration of Malay Tunjuk Ajar with Civic Education frameworks, linking customary deliberation to Pancasila's democratic principles and to the development of civic competence. Practically, this study provides a culturally grounded model for conflict resolution that can complement formal legal mechanisms and inform Civic Education curricula on multicultural citizenship.
