Abstract

                                              ABSTRACT This research entitled “The Traditional Symbols of Marriage in Buru and Ireland: A Semiotic Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, analyze and describe the kinds and meanings of the traditional symbols of marriage in Buru and Ireland and to find out the similarities and the differences of traditional symbols of marriage in Buru and Ireland. This research used a descriptive method. The data of Buru marriage symbols were taken by interviewing four informants who are the native speaker to explain what is unknown by writer, while the data of Irish marriage symbols were taken from several articles. The writer used Peirce‟s theory in anylizing the data and Lado‟s theory in contrasting both cultures to find out the differences and similarities. The result of this research shows that the marriage culture in Buru has 6 kinds of symbol such as areca nut as a symbol of agreement, spear and machete as a symbol of proposal, the dowry for the bride‟s parents, sign for daughter and son in law as a symbol husband and wife, the dowry for all family of the bride, and gong. Irish marriage culture has 9 kinds of symbol such as claddagh ring as a symbol of love, loyality and friendship, bouquet as a symbol of fertility, blue wedding dress as a symbol of lucky, wedding cake as a symbol of fertility, honeymoon as a symbol of the bride and groom after marriage, magic hanky as a symbol of fertility, make-up bells as a symbol of reminder of the couple wedding vows and also restore the harmony, the lucky horseshoe as a symbol of luck and braided hair as a symbol of feminime power and luck. The similarities of traditional symbols in Buru and Ireland are the kind wedding proposal, wedding ring and giving coin which have the same meaning. The differences of both cultures are Irish traditional merriage has wedding dress, wedding cake, honeymoon, bouquet, make-up bells, lucky horses, magic hanky and braided hair while Buru has not. Buru traditional marriage uses the symbols such as areca nut, spear, machete, dowry and gong, while Irish traditional marriage has not. Abstract

                                                ABSTRACT This research is an attempt to describe and analyze the kinship terms in English and Talaud Language. The problems of this research namely “what are the kinship terms in English and Talaud language and what are the similarities and differences of both languages.” The method which used in this research is descriptive method. The theory which used in this research are Burling’s and Lounsburry’s theories to analyze the kinship terms, and Lado’s theory to contrast both languages. The English data were taken from sociolinguistic books especially about kinship terms, internet and previous thesis about kinship terms that have been done before, whereas the data about the kinship terms in Talaud language were collected from the informants. Data were taken by interviewing the informants who know well about Talaud language and can speak Talaud language fluently. The result of this research shows that the kinship terms in both languages are divided into consanguineal and afinal terms which are differentiated between sex, level of generation, lineage and age. Similarities in terms of sex namely, ‘father’ in English and ‘iaman’ in Talaud language and the similarities of generation for example in English ‘brother’ and ‘turran esa’ in Talaud language. Sex in English and Talaud language is very important things to know because there are some variety of different terms to express differences in the sex of the relatives concerned. Lineage in English and Talaud language refers to the collateral only because the relatives are from the same ancestor but do not from one direct descendent. The difference between two languages is that the principle of age is not too important thing in English, but it is very important in Talaud Language to distinguish the older and the younger. Kinship term in English is not only refers to one relative but also to greet a priest and pastor, but in Talaud language it is not. Kinship term in English has four generations above and below ego, while in Talaud language has three generations above and below ego. Abstract

                                            ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Compliments in English and Mongondow Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and to contrast the topics and responses of compliments in English and Mongondow languages. This research uses a descriptive method. The data of compliments in English were collected from films entitled Forever my Girl (2018) and A Star is Born (2018), while the data of compliments in Mongondow language were collected from observation of conversations among people who live in Kopandakan II and can speak Mongondow language well. The writer uses the theory of Wolfson in Richards and Shcmidt (1986) to identifi, classifi, and describe the data about the topics of compliment and the responses of compliment of both languages. The writer uses Lado’s theory (1957) to make a contrastive analis of both languages in finding out the similarities and differences of compliments and its responses in English and Mongondow language. This result shows that the topics of compliment in Mongondow language are personal attribute, possession, children, pet, accomplishment, and change in appearance, while in English Language are personal attribute, possession, children, pet, accomplishment, and change in appearance. The responses of compliment in Mongondow language are acceptance, agreement, rejection, shift, and return and the responses of compliment in English Language are acceptance, agreement, rejection, shift, and return. The similarities of the topics of compliment in Mongondow language and English language which are found namely personal attribute, possession, children, pet, accomplishment, and change in appearance, and the compliment responses in Mongondow language and English language namely acceptance, agreement, rejection, shift, and return. The differences of both languages namely the topics of compliment in Mongondow language is found about plants while in English language isn’t, while the responses of compliment in Mongondow language has shy while smilling, and laugh while in English language. The adjectival words which are used in English Language namely beautiful, proud, the best, ravishing, great, excited, cute, good, lucky, soft, kind, nice, amazing, very good, well, smells good, perfect, and awesome while in Mongondow language namely mo’ jago, mo’ lawak, mo’ sopan, mo’ bagu, mo’ pandoi, totok mo’ rajing, aidon no lunat, no’ lebeh pasung, no lebeh lantut, and ontongon mo’ muda. The verbal words used in Compliments namely like and love, and in Mongondow language mo’ ibog. The adjectival used frequently in English Language are beautiful, good, and great while in Mongondow language namely no’ lebeh pasung and mo’ bagu.Keywords: Compliment, English and Mongondow Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

                                              ABSTRACTS     This study is an attempt to describe, identify, classify, and analyze modal verbs in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon. Modal is a verb that combines with another verb to indicate modal or tense. A modal expresses necessity, ability, permission, possibility, necessary, willingness, and others.The problem of this study is to find out the forms and meanings of modals in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon. The method which used in this study is descriptive method.The data of modals are collected from the sentences found in the novel. The theory which used is taken from Beaumont and Granger. The result shows that there are seven forms of method found in the novel, namely can, could, may, should, will, and would.The meanings of modals are: can, ability, permission, possibility, and offering. Could expresses possibility, ability, disabilty. Will expresses request. Would expresses polite request. Abstract

                                             ABSTRACT      This study entitled interrogative sentence in the film Lucy by Luc Besson. In this study the writer identifies, classifies forms,analyzes the fuctions of interrogative sentences in the film Lucy, and finds the most frequently used of interrogative sentences in the film Lucy. The writer uses theory from Aarts and Aarts (1982), Aarts and Aarts say that interrogative sentence is a sentence that contains subjects and open with an auxiliary verb or wh-word. The writer used descriptive method from O’Grady and Dobrovoslky (1992:2), He says that descriptive method will be used to describe and explain the facts that they observe and will not change them. The data of interrogative sentences were taken from skrip of the film Lucy. The result shows that interrogative sentences in the film Lucy have three types those are yes/no question, tag question, and wh-question. According to its fuction in communication, interrogative sentence can be functioned as question and request. The most frequently used of interrogative sentence in the film Lucy is Wh-question.Keywords : Interrogative Sentence, Film Lucy,Syntax Analysis.

Rambing, DEA2                                    Donald R. Lotulung, S.S, M.Hum3      This research entitles “Analisis Tanda dalam Film Inferno Karya Dan Brown: Suatu Analisis Semiotik”. The aims of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze the kinds and meaning of signs in Inferno film. In this research, the writer uses Peirce’s theory in the process of identifying, classifying, and analyzing each scene containing the signs used the representamen aspect. The method of this research is descriptive. In doing this research, the writer read some books, semiotics journal, articles, and also downloaded resources from the internet. The data of signs were collected from every scene which contains sign in the film and analyzed according to Pierce’s theory. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of signs in film, namely icons, index, and symbols. There are 9 icons, 4 indexes, and 17 symbols. They were found from 25 scenes in the Inferno film and each sign has different meanings.Keywords: Sign, Inferno Film, Semiotic Analysis

Abstract

                                                  ABSTRACT        This research entitles “Aspek Sopan Santun Ujaran dalam Film Kingsman Karya Matthew Vaughn: Suatu Analisis Pragmatik”. In this research, the writer focuses on the polite utterance as one aspect of behavior which is found in the film Kingsman. The aims of this research are to identify and classify the kinds of maxims as well as to analyze the functions of maxims used in the film Kingsman. The writer categorized them into their suitable maxims using the theory of Leech (1983). The method used in this study is a descriptive method. In collecting the data the writer has watched 6 times Kingsman film which is the object of this research. The result of this research shows that based on the theory of Leech (1983), there are six kinds of maxims, namely tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. There are 3 utterances that function as tact maxim, 6 utterances that function as generosity maxim, 11 utterances that function as approbation maxim, 5 utterances that function as modesty maxim, 4 utterances that function as agreement maxim, 3 utterances that function as sympathy maxim. It is expected that this study can help the students and readers in learning politeness aspects of using language.Keywords: Politeness Aspects, Pragmatic, Film Kingsman

Abstract

                                               ABSTRACT          This research entitled “Analisis Tanda Dalam Film Fantastic Beast : The Crimes of Grindelwald Karya David Yates”. The aims of this research are to identify and classify the kind of signs as well as to analyze the meanings of signs used in the film Fantastic Beast : The Crimes of Grindelwald. The writer uses the theory of Charles Sanders Pierce (1995) in the process of identifying, classifying, and analyzing each sign and the meaning of signs in Fantastic Beast : The Crimes of Grindelwald. The method used in this study is a descriptive method. In doing this research, the writer read some journals, books, and articles about signs. The data were collected by the writer from film Fantastic Beast : The Crimes of Grindelwald by watching, finding, and taking the piece of images that contain the signs, and then classifying them based on its kinds from the film. The classified data were analyzed to find out the meaning. The result of this research shows that based on the theory of Pierce (1995) there are three kinds of signs, namely icons, index, and symbols. Those are 7 icons, 12 indexes, 7 symbols. Abstract

                                                 ABSTRACT     In English, there are two subclasses of verb, they are lexical verbs and auxiliary verbs. Auxiliary verb is a helping verb which grammatically functions to form or to add meaning of the verb phrase. This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the auxiliary verbs which are found in the album of Ed Sheeran Devide and No. 6 Collaborations Project. The aim of this research is to identify and analyze the form and meaning of auxiliary verb used in the album. The method in this research is descriptive method. The data of auxiliary verbs have been taken from the sentences in the album of Ed Sheeran Devide and No. 6 Collaborations Project and analyzed by using Quirk and Greenbaum’s concept. The result of this study show that the auxiliary verbs found in the two album of Ed Sheeran are categorized into two classes: primary auxiliary verb (am, is, are, were, was) and modal auxiliary verbs (can, could, may, might, will, would, should) however must, shall, used to, need, be supposed to and dare are not found in these album. In terms of the meaning, the primary auxiliary verbs have no meaning depending on the context. Can means ability and negative it means inability. Could means ability and with negative it means inability. Will means willingness, representation of some, situation, promise and agreement. Would means willingness. Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT      This study entitled “Illocutionary Act in the Gospel of Matthew: A Pragmatic Analysis”. The method that is used in this research is descriptive method. The purpose of this study is to identify, classify and analyze the kinds and functions of ilocutionary act in the Gospel of Matthew. The collected data have been analyzed by using theory of Searle (1979) in Leech (1983). There are four kinds of illocutionary act in the Gospel of Matthew, those are assertives, directives, commisives, and declaratives. While expressives were not spoken by the characters in the Gospel of Matthew. The illocutionary functions of assertives in this Gospel are stating, another functions as, asserting, suggesting, complaining, reporting were not found in the verses of the Gospel of Matthew, the illocutionary functions of directives which were used by Jesus, His disciples, and other characters were requesting, commanding, advising, asking. ordering and recommending function are not found in the Gospel of Matthew. The illocutionary functions of commisives is promising. While functions like uttering are not stated, the illocutionary functions of declaration which are used in the Gospel of Matthew are granting and naming. Functions of promoting and punishing were not found in the Gospel of Matthew. The significance of this research is to give contribution of the language development in linguistic study especially in analyzing illocutionary act through pragmatic analysis. Keywords: Illocutionary Act, Kinds and Functions, Gospel of Matthew.
