Abstract

Corn straw as agricultural waste is a source of feed for ruminants which has a high fiber content and still contains good nutritional value and is sufficiently available. Unfortunately, this potency has not been fully utilized by the farmer as animal feed. This condition is found in almost all regions in NTB because we still see a lot of corn straw or corn waste in general, a lot of which is wasted even burned by the community. One of the efforts that need be made so that it can be used as a source of feed is by knowing the production of corn straw and its potential as feed for ruminants in Bolo District, Bima Regency. The research was carried out by survey method by using a questionnaire. The research results showed that the area of maize plants in Bolo District was 4,041.88 hectares with a harvest area of 3,024.76 hectares. The production of corn waste consisting of stalks, leaves, husks, cobs and silk was 3,629.66 tons in dry matter. The population of ruminants (cattle, buffalo, goats and sheep) is 10,008 heads with the largest livestock population is the cattle. From the calculation between the amount of corn waste production and the ruminant livestock population in Bolo District, Bima Regency, it can be concluded that corn waste has a high potential as feed, which is 19 percent.

Abstract

The availability of quality feed is a crucial factor in supporting the productivity of Peranakan Ettawa (PE) goats, which have high potential for both milk and meat production. The main challenges faced by farmers, particularly those in the Kerta Bangkit Livestock Group, Gangga Village, North Lombok, are the limited availability of forage during the dry season and the high cost of commercial feed. To address these challenges, a community service program was implemented, focusing on the utilization of organic waste as an alternative feed source. The program was conducted on June 25, 2025, involving 21 farmers as active participants. The activities included a preliminary survey, participatory socialization, training on semi-moist feed fermentation techniques using organic waste, and field mentoring. The training results showed an improvement in farmers’ knowledge and skills in processing organic waste into nutritionally valuable feed. Field evaluations recorded an average body weight gain of 62–85 g/head/day in PE goats after receiving fermented feed. In addition to reducing production costs, the program also contributed to environmentally friendly waste management. Overall, this community service program successfully enhanced farmers’ independence, supported the sustainability of smallholder livestock farming, and provided positive impacts on both community welfare and the environment. Abstract

Peranakan Etawa (PE) goats have significant potential as dairy livestock producing high-quality milk, yet their management in the Tunas Maju Livestock Group, Setanggor Village, remains focused on meat production. The main issues include limited knowledge of dairy goat management, efficient feeding, and livestock health practices. This community service aimed to improve farmers’ skills through socialization, training on feed formulation, and livestock health management. The approach combined lectures, discussions, and practical demonstrations to strengthen applied understanding. The results indicated that farmers gained greater awareness of the potential of PE goats as milk producers, improved their knowledge of balanced feeding, and recognized the importance of animal health practices. Despite challenges in inadequate housing facilities, the program positively impacted farmers’ capacity in dairy goat management, thereby supporting community welfare and strengthening the local economy
