Abstract

This research discusses the students’ speaking ability of Procedure Text at the Second Grade Students of SMA Tri Bhakti Pekanbaru. The objective of the research is to know the students’ speaking ability in procedure text and to find out which aspectt is the most dominant problem for the students in speaking. The design of this research was qualitative research. The result of data was students’ comprehension score was 3.15 because most of them understood the directions on the speaking test well and they also conveyed the procedure text sequentially using the simple present tense correctly so that the listener could understand them although there were several problems. Students’ fluency score was 3.15 because most of the students’ present the procedure text fluently and smoothly even though some students stammered and paused several times. Students’ grammar score was 3.13 because most of them were good at arranging their sentences correctly according to the grammar rules using the simple present tense even though they made some mistakes. The students' pronunciation score was 2.86 because some students had difficulty in pronouncing some words and there were some confusions with the listener, although not all students did so. Students’ vocabulary score was 2.92 because some students had problem with vocabulary mastery and use inappropriate vocabulary, but overall the students have sufficient vocabulary to express tips simply related to the topic. In conclusion, the students' speaking ability on procedure text is in a good category.

Abstract

During Covid-19, the process of teaching and learning in school and university changed from offline learning into online learning. This research aims to know the students' perception and motivation towards online learning in the sixth semester of English Language Education of FKIP UIR. This research used the descriptive qualitative method.The sample was 33 of class 6A at English Language Education of FKIP UIR. Sampling was done by used Purposive sampling. The instrument of the research is questionnaires and interviews. To collect the data, the researcher used Google Form and Google Meet. The total of questions given to respondents was 48 statements using the Likert Scale. Meanwhile, the interview used open-ended questions consist of 9 questions. This study found that students have a positive perception on online learning. In infrastructure facilities, it is already available of mobile devices and internet connections. In technology, students can maximize the use of the technology. Meanwhile, student interaction with teachers and students is still lacking, so offline learning is necessary. Then, the researcher found that students have high motivation. Students' attention gets the highest percentage of 57.6%, students in building curiosity, interactive and exciting learning. In relevance, students feel that online learning is suitable to be applied in the pandemic conditions. In addition, in students' confidence, most of students are motivated to study outside the class that increases their knowledge. The last, in students' satisfaction, 48,5% of students agree that they satisfied with the implementation of online learning at the sixth semester of English Language of Education.

Abstract

The implementation of this community service activity aims to increase the understanding of FKIP students at the Islamic University of Riau in working on TOEFL questions. This is very much needed by students as early as possible so that they can prepare themselves to compete in the world of work later after they graduate from college. The facts on the ground show that there are many job opportunities for those who have English proficiency both orally and in writing. Therefore, the service team sees the need for educators to equip students with the ability to work on TOEFL questions, so that later they will understand how to do it and get the maximum score according to the needs of the world of work. This service is carried out in the English laboratory of FKIP UIR. The mentoring participants were 25 final semester students of the English Education Study Program FKIP UIR. With this assistance, it is hoped that they will be motivated to study TOEFL and be able to prepare themselves to compete for jobs. This service activity received a positive response from all activity participants. They said that such activities could be carried out on an ongoing basis so that they would continue to receive guidance in studying the TOEFL. Furthermore, participants are motivated to continue to improve their ability to work on TOEFL questions in order to get better job opportunities for the future.

Abstract

This research aims to know the students' ability to pronounce English Fricative consonants at English Language Education of FKIP UIR. The design of this research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The researcher conducted the study at English Education of FKIP UIR. The researcher took 30 students from 65 second-semester students' at English Education of FKIP UIR. In this research, the researcher used the purposive sampling technique. The research instrument is a pronunciation test consisting of 26 words, and a recorder collected the data. The online Cambridge-American dictionary is used as the correction standard by the researcher. The result of data analysis showed that the average score for students' pronunciation was 19,62, with scores ranging from 7.4. Afterward, the findings revealed that students still have many problems pronouncing English fricatives, especially in /f/, /θ/, and /ʒ/ sounds. Meanwhile, the researcher found the most trouble when students were pronouncing the fricative sound /ʒ/ in the initial position. After that, the sound /f/ in the medial and /ʒ/ in the final position have the same lower score. Then, there is a problem when students pronounce the /θ/ sound and the/ sound in the final position. In conclusion, the student's ability to pronounce English fricative consonants at FKIP UIR English Language Education is fairly good.

Abstract

Kosa kata merupakan hal mendasar dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Semakin banyak kosakata yang dimiliki seseorang maka akan semakin paham dalam memahami suatu kalimat. Berdasarkan hasil observasi dan interview dengan guru Bahasa Inggris disekolah tersebut, disampaikan bahwa tantangan yang dihadapi oleh siswa/i yang telah tamat adalah kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang kurang sehingga belum bisa bersaing didunia kerja terutama pekerjaan diperusahaan swasta/asing yang menuntut mereka untuk menguasai bahasa Inggris baik lisan dan tulisan. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut, tim pengabdian memberikan solusi dengan memberikan pendampingan penggunaan aplikasi Hello English yang menghadirkan fitur untuk meningkatkan kosakata bahasa Inggris. Metode pelaksanaan pengabdian yakni tahap persiapan, tahap pelaksanaan dan tahap monitoring dan evaluasi. Adapun hasil dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang telah dilaksanakan di SMKS Budi Dharma Dumai adalah seluruh peserta sangat antusias mengikuti kegiatan pendampingan mulai dari sesi pertama penjelasan aplikasi Hello English, kemudian sesi kedua praktek penggunaan aplikasi dan sesi terakhir diskusi dan tanya jawab. Peserta termotivasi untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris karena aplikasi Hello English mudah digunakan dan tidak menggunakan kuota yang banyak. Kegiatan Pengabdian ini berkelanjutan dengan terus berkomunikasi dengan guru Bahasa Inggris terkait perkembangan siswa siswi dalam penggunaan aplikasi Hello English sebagai media pembelajaran dikelas maupun diluar kelas.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out how the woman's language features used in Ted Talks videos and the language functions used by the woman speakers in Ted Talks. This research is descriptive. This is a descriptive study. The researcher obtained the data by downloading and writing the transcripts of Ted Talks videos. The researcher recognized the sorts of woman's language features utilized by women speakers in TED talk videos to examine the data. The study then determined the language function of all types of female language characteristics utilized by female speakers in TED talks videos. The researcher discovered that women speakers in Ted Talks employed seven sorts of female language features, such as lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, and super polite forms, as the study's final conclusion. The researchers also discovered the language functions employed by women speakers in Ted Talk, such as directive, expressive, referential, metalinguistic, and phatic. However, the researcher found no language features or functions exclusive to women that were not employed by women speakers in Ted Talks, such as exact color descriptors, avoidance of harsh swear words, and emphatic stress. The poetic function is a language function that women speakers in Ted Talks do not employ.

Abstract

English as a Foreign Language teaching and learning has made extensive use of the integration of multimedia language such as Rosetta Stone. Therefore, this research aims to find out Junior High school students' motivation in learning pronunciation by using the Rosetta Stone in three dimensions of self-determination theory in terms of autonomy, competence and relatedness. The quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with 30 samples divided into two groups was used in this methodology. The experimental group received face-to-face instruction using Rosetta Stone, while the control group only received instruction using the drilling technique. Furthermore, the result of statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the groups in terms of total support for the experimental group. As a result, Rosetta Stone inspired students to participate in the pronunciation class, and they are enthusiastic and satisfied with the use of Rosetta Stone in the classroom.

Abstract

It is commonly known that Indonesians speak their mother tongue along with the national language, as well as foreign languages, when interacting with one another in society. The ethnic diversity, cultural diversity, and linguistic diversity of Indonesia help to create multilingual languages. The purpose of this study was to determine the structure and purpose of the English-Indonesian code mixing used by Sandiaga Uno in a speech video on YouTube. This study used a descriptive qualitative method that was based on Creswell's theory and applied Sugiono's documentation-based approach to data collection. While the Miles and Huberman theory, which included data reduction, data display, and conclusion/verification, is used for data analysis. This study shows the many kinds and purposes of code mixing for each statement that Sandia Uno has uttered, including code mixing of words, phrases, hybrids, word reduplication, idioms, and clauses. The study finds a few advantageous uses for code mixing in sandiaga uno. They are: the motivation to experience need, providing additional information, and expressing one's emotions.

Abstract

This research is important in analyzing and describing language styles, which have become one of the linguistics categories. The use of language and language style in literary works has also been studied and is very important for linguistic and literary studies. This article illustrates that stylistic analysis is an effective method to help students improve their reading and appreciation skills. It begins by briefly reviewing how stylistics is applied to teaching English by researchers. It then discusses stylistic analysis and how to do it by providing some examples. Finally, it concludes that teaching advanced English should incorporate stylistics, which are both necessary and practical. Stylistics is one of the sub-topics of learning English in high schools. It can also help students understand advertising language. It also helps students learn foreign languages in English language teaching, such as Indonesian, by preparing them to learn and use foreign languages effectively. Furthermore, Students are expected to be able to understand the language of advertising. To understand the language of advertising, teachers must provide understanding to students through stylistics.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the students’ errors in pronouncing of English words on vowel and consonant sounds in the first semester of English students of FKIP UIR. The research design of this study is descriptive research. The researcher assessed the students’ errors pronunciation at English Language Education of FKIP UIR. The Respondent of this research was the first semester of English students of FKIP UIR. In this study, the research instrument is an oral test, there are 40 words that be tested, and the data was collected by a recorder. In analyzing the data, the researcher helped by other English lecturers as raters. Then, the data was checked by using talking-talking software and phonetic transcription. The result of this study described that there are some errors made by students in pronouncing English words. There are 25 students’ errors pronounced short vowel /e/, 15 students’ errors pronouncing short vowel /ᴜ/, 21 Students’ errors pronouncing the consonant / ð/, 18 students’ errors pronouncing consonant /ɵ/, and 17 students’ errors pronouncing consonant /ʒ/.
