Abstract

The purpose of this study is to respond to these profit changes by modifying the ROA, ROE, and NPM ratio formulas by expanding the concept of "earnings" to include comprehensive income and attributable income. Observational data from 2,641 firm-years from 543 publicly listed companies in Indonesia for the 2020-2024 period using multiple linear regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that modified financial ratio analysis has value relevance because it influences stock returns and has predictive power over dividends. The implication of this finding is that profitability using comprehensive income has value relevance and that level 1 of the fair value hierarchy is the most predictive and most responded to by the market, compared to comprehensive income and attributable income. The originality of this study examines the value relevance of using modified financial ratio analysis, specifically profitability, by involving comprehensive income and attributable income.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of financial performance and sustainability performance on stock prices, as well as to examine the moderating role of earnings management in coal sub-sector companies in Southeast Asia. The study uses secondary data obtained from financial statements and sustainability reports of coal companies in Southeast Asia during the 2018–2022 period with a total of 105 observations. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) with the assistance of SPSS version 26.The results indicate that financial performance has a positive and significant effect on stock prices, while sustainability performance does not have a significant effect. Furthermore, earnings management is proven to moderate the relationship between financial performance and stock prices positively, but it negatively moderates the relationship between sustainability performance and stock prices. This study contributes to the finance and sustainability literature by integrating financial performance, sustainability performance, and earnings management practices into a single research model within the coal sector in Southeast Asia. Previous studies mostly focused on the direct relationship between financial or ESG performance and stock prices, while this study highlights the role of earnings management as both a strengthening and weakening factor in such relationships. This research provides practical implications for investors to consider not only profitability but also governance transparency in order to avoid information distortion caused by earnings management. For regulators, the findings can serve as a basis for strengthening sustainability reporting requirements in coal companies. For corporate management, the study emphasizes the importance of integrating sustainability with sound governance practices to enhance long-term firm value.

Abstract

This study examines the economic influence of financial performance and sustainability performance on firm value, with dividends serving as a moderating variable, in oil, gas, and lubricant sub-sector companies across Southeast Asia during the 2021–2024 period. A quantitative causal research design was employed, utilizing secondary data derived from annual and sustainability reports of publicly listed companies in Southeast Asian stock exchanges. The sample comprises 18 companies selected through purposive sampling. The variables analyzed include financial performance (Return on Assets/ROA), sustainability performance (Environmental, Social, and Governance/ESG Score based on the 2021 GRI Standards), firm value (Price to Book Value/PBV), and dividends as a moderating variable. Data were analyzed using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) with SPSS version 26. The findings reveal that financial performance initially shows no significant effect on firm value; however, after the inclusion of dividends as a moderating variable, the effect becomes significant and negative. Sustainability performance (ESG Score) demonstrates a positive and significant influence on firm value before moderation, but this relationship loses significance once dividends are introduced into the model. Furthermore, dividends do not moderate the relationship between financial performance and firm value, yet they significantly and negatively moderate the relationship between sustainability performance and firm value. This suggests that higher dividend payouts may weaken the positive impact of sustainability performance on firm value, as investors tend to prioritize short-term returns over long-term sustainability benefits. These results imply that companies should carefully align dividend policies with sustainability strategies to sustain long-term firm value and investor confidence.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of dividend payment pressure and corporate governance on tax avoidance in publicly listed companies in Southeast Asia. The data were collected from the financial statements of 3,835 companies listed in Southeast Asia during 2019–2025, including the Philippines (PSE), Singapore (SGX), Thailand (SET), Indonesia (IDX), and Malaysia (MYX), sourced from the Bloomberg Database. After excluding loss-making companies and those that did not regularly publish financial statements, the final sample consisted of 1,392 firm-years. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Drawing on agency theory, the fraud triangle theory, and signaling theory, the study finds that dividend payment pressure increases tax avoidance, while strong corporate governance constrains it, with results remaining consistent in robustness tests and 2SLS endogeneity checks. The originality of this research lies in the measurement of tax avoidance, which is modified using effective tax rates based on operating income (ETR-OI) and comprehensive income (ETR-CI). This study provides a more precise measurement of tax avoidance and offers new empirical evidence from Southeast Asian companies. Keywords: Effective Tax Rate, Operating Income, Comprehensive Income, Tax Avoidance, Southeast Asia
