Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental aspect of English language learning that enables students to comprehend and use language effectively. However, seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu still experience difficulties in understanding word meanings and using vocabulary appropriately in sentences. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Wordwall game on students’ vocabulary mastery, particularly in terms of word meaning and word usage. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design involving 60 students divided into an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before and after the treatment and were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. The findings revealed that the experimental group achieved a mean post-test score of 82.47, while the control group obtained a mean score of 71.15. Statistical analysis showed a significance value of p = 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. These findings demonstrate that the Wordwall game is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery compared to conventional teaching methods. Pedagogically, the study suggests that Wordwall can be utilized as an interactive learning medium to enhance students’ motivation and vocabulary achievement in English language learning.

Abstract

TikTok has become one of the most widely used social media platforms among students and offers various interactive features, such as short-video creation, audio recording, and content sharing, which have the potential to support language learning and speaking practice. This study aimed to determine whether the use of the TikTok application could improve students’ speaking skills and to identify the most improved aspect of speaking. This research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Moutong. The sample consisted of 26 students in the experimental group and 24 students in the control group. Data were collected through speaking tests administered in pre-test and post-test sessions. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 46.42 in the pre-test to 86.42 in the post-test, while the control group increased from 35.54 to 48.63. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed that the significance value of the experimental group was 0.000 and that of the control group was 0.001, indicating a significant improvement in students’ speaking skills after the implementation of TikTok. Among the three aspects of speaking, accuracy showed the greatest improvement. Therefore, the TikTok application was found to be effective in improving students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

This research investigated the effectiveness of YouTube videos in improving the English-speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. Two groups participated in the reseach's quasi-experimental design: an experimental group that was treated using YouTube videos and a control group that was taught using conventional methods. Fluency and comprehensibility were the main goals of the speaking skills evaluation. A speaking rubric was used to collect the data through pre-tests and post-tests. Because of the non-normal distribution of the data, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann-Whitney U Test were used for analysis. The results demonstrated that the experimental group's speaking scores significantly exceeded those of the control group. While the control group's mean score only improved from 29.44 to 45.00, the experimental group's reached from 36.32 to 72.11. A substantial difference (p = 0.001) between the two groups was verified by the statistical analysis, suggesting that YouTube videos are a useful tool for improving students' English-speaking skills. According to the research, including digital resources like YouTube into English language instruction can foster a more stimulating and encouraging learning environment.
