Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Climate change and food security are global challenges on this era. Climate trends play a critical role in characterizing climatic conditions and informing agricultural suitability recommendations in tropical regions. As rapidly expanding tropical urban areas, Palembang and Jambi warrant particular attention regarding to climate and food security challenges. The study aimed to evaluate climate change and suitability for urban agriculture in Palembang and Jambi. The study used secondary data of monthly rainfall, air temperature, relative humidity, and sunshine duration for the 2014-2018 and 2019-2023 periods. The collected data were subsequently averaged on a monthly basis for each observation period. Thereafter, the data were analyzed using descriptive method. The results showed that there are obvious differences of climate status between Palembang and Jambi, especially related to rainfall. Rainfall in Palembang is higher than Jambi as represented by number of wet months (5-8 months on Palembang and 3-6 months on Jambi). Meanwhile, the dry season in Jambi is potentially longer than Palembang. There was an indication of increasing air temperature in both regions, as indicated by the higher air temperature in 2019-2023 compared to 2014-2018. The air temperature increases each month in Palembang and Jambi is 1.14% and 0.93%, respectively. Nevertheless, air temperature, air humidity, and sunshine duration were still within the range of tropical plants to grow and be productive. Therefore, the recommendation of suitable cultivation in Palembang and Jambi is almost similar, in March-April and November-December applying cultivation techniques under excess water condition, otherwise in June-August on drought-resistant or minimum irrigation cultivation.

Abstract

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) leaves are widely utilized as a leafy vegetable due to their high protein and bioactive compound content. However, information regarding suitable planting materials and planting media composition for optimizing cassava leaf production is still limited. This study aimed to determine the appropriate planting material and planting media composition to improve the growth and yield of cassava leaf shoots. The experiment was conducted from July-August 2024 at the Experimental Field, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya. This study used a factorial Randomized Block Design consisting of two factors: planting material (three levels: upper stem, middle stem, and lower stem) and planting media composition (three levels: soil, soil + cattle manure, and soil + goat manure). Each treatment combination was replicated 3 times, and each experimental unit consisted of 3 plants, resulting in 9 treatment combinations × 3 replications × 3 plants per unit, for a total of 81 plants in the experiment. The results showed that the use of middle-stem cuttings combined with soil + cattle manure resulted in higher sprout growth, number of leaves, SPAD index, and leaf-shoot harvest compared to other treatments. Regular leaf shoot pruning increases the number of edible leaf shoots. The selection of planting material with the right composition of planting medium can sustainably increase the productivity of leafy vegetables in cassava.

Abstract

Aglaonema commutatum or aglaonema is an ornamental leaf plant. In Indonesia, it is populary referred to as Sri Rejeki. Aglaonema variety Lady Gaga has high aesthetic value and demand by many people because its distinctive patterns and colors. The success of aglaonema cultivation is influenced by the composition of growing medium used. This study aims to determine the best planting medium composition through a comparative study. The research was conducted from July to September 2023 in Palembang City. Was arranged based on Randomized Block Design, consisting of three treatments: volcanic sand (M0), volcanic and rice husk 1:1 v/v (M1), and volcanic sand and risk husk 1:2 v/v (M2). The research data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The result of this study showed that the use volcanic and rice husk 1:1 v/v (M1) significantly enhanced all growth parameters, including the number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, and new leaf growth; and parameters related to visual color and quality grade, namely parameters color, brightness, shape and size, also aglaonema leaf motif. In addition, direct sunlight also effect the color, brightness, and leaf motif of aglaonema var. Lady Gaga which is increasingly fading. Therefore, it is recommended that aglaonema cultivation be carried out in shaded areas that not exposed to direct sunlight.

Abstract

Abstract. Lakitan B, Kartika K, Widuri LI, Siaga E, Fadilah LN. 2021. Lesser-known ethnic leafy vegetables Talinum paniculatum grown at tropical ecosystem: Morphological traits and non-destructive estimation of total leaf area per branch. Biodiversitas 22: 4487-4495. Talinum paniculatum known as Java ginseng is an ethnic vegetable in Indonesia that has also been utilized as a medical plant. Young leaves are the primary economic part of T. paniculatum, which can be eaten fresh or cooked. This study was focused on characterizing morphological traits of T. panicultaum and developing a non-destructive yet accurate and reliable model for predicting total area per leaf cluster on each elongated branch per flush growth cycle. The non-destructive approach allows frequent and timely measurements. In addition, the developed model can be used as guidance for deciding the time to harvest for optimum yield. Results indicated that T. paniculatum flourished rapidly under wet tropical conditions, especially if they were propagated using stem cuttings. The plants produced more than 50 branches and more than 800 leaves, or on average produced more than 15 leaves per branch at the age of nine weeks after planting (WAP). The zero-intercept linear model using a combination of two traits of length x width (LW) as a predictor was accurate and reliable for predicting a single leaf area (R2 = 0.997). Meanwhile, the estimation of total area per leaf cluster was more accurate if three traits, i.e., number of leaves, the longest leaf, and the widest leaf in each cluster were used as predictors with the zero-intercept linear regression model (R2 = 0.984). However, the use of a single trait of length (L) and width (W) of the largest leaf within each cluster as a predictor in the power regression model exhibited moderately accurate prediction at the R2 = 0.883 and 0.724, respectively.
