Abstract

Cultural archives are information sources of historical, cultural, educational, and research value that must be managed systematically to prevent loss, damage, or destruction. This study aims to examine the concepts, processes, benefits, and challenges of acquisition and appraisal of cultural archives within the framework of national archival management. The method used is a literature study, analyzing various relevant sources, regulations, and archival guidelines. The results show that acquisition functions as a process of rescuing archives from individuals, families, communities, and institutions, while appraisal functions to determine the archival value through the assessment of administrative, legal, historical, cultural, scientific, and informational value. Both processes are carried out through the stages of identification, selection, acquisition, appraisal, status determination, storage, and preservation. Acquisition and appraisal have proven beneficial in rescuing archives, preserving national cultural identity, supporting research and education, and public information services, although challenges remain in the form of low public awareness, limited archivists, budget, and facilities. Synergy between the government, archival institutions, universities, and the community is needed to achieve sustainable preservation of cultural archives.

Abstract

Cultural heritage is a vital component of community identity, playing a key role in sustaining collective values, strengthening social cohesion, and preserving cultural memory across generations. West Nusa Tenggara Province possesses a rich cultural heritage reflected in the traditions of the Sasak, Samawa, and Mbojo peoples traditions that embody values ​​such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong), religiosity, solidarity, consensus-based deliberation, and respect for nature and ancestors. This study aims to analyze the role of cultural heritage in shaping and maintaining the collective values ​​of communities in West Nusa Tenggara, as well as to identify challenges and preservation strategies amidst the forces of globalization. A qualitative approach utilizing descriptive methods was employed. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation, and literature reviews, and subsequently analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model, comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that cultural heritage in West Nusa Tenggara serves not only as a marker of cultural identity but also as a medium for transmitting collective values ​​that reinforce social solidarity and community cultural resilience. Traditions such as Bau Nyale, Sakeco, Rimpu, Kareku Kandei, and Uma Lengge exemplify values ​​of togetherness, cooperation, and respect for ancestral customs. However, modernization, globalization, and declining participation among the younger generation pose challenges to cultural preservation. Therefore, synergy among the government, educational institutions, cultural communities, and the general public is essential to develop sustainable preservation strategies that ensure the continuity of cultural heritage while upholding the community's collective values.
