Abstract

The growing global interest in learning Indonesian necessitates effective and engaging teaching materials for foreign speakers (BIPA/Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing). However, traditional BIPA instruction faces challenges, including low student motivation, limited speaking skills, and insufficient integration of Indonesian cultural elements, leading to suboptimal learning outcomes. To address the gaps, this qualitative needs analysis investigates the specific requirements of international students and instructors for storytelling-based animated video teaching materials that incorporate Indonesian culture. Data were collected through purposive sampling, interviews, questionnaires, and observations across six research stages. The study aimed to identify key elements for BIPA materials that enhance speaking skills and motivation while fostering a deeper cultural understanding. Findings reveal that language needs, cultural background, learning styles, storytelling elements, and Indonesian cultural integration influence international students' preferences for BIPA teaching materials. Incorporating these elements into material design will boost effectiveness and appeal. This study concludes that storytelling-based animated videos effectively bridge linguistic competence and cultural comprehension in BIPA learning, contributing to innovative, student-centric materials.

Abstract

Learning Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) requires structured, communicative, and internationally standardized teaching materials. One widely used teaching material is Sahabatku Indonesia Level 4, which is intended for the intermediate level. The urgency of this research lies in the importance of ensuring that the teaching materials not only convey language formally, but also align with the needs of learners' communicative competence and recognized standards, such as the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2 and the Indonesian Language Proficiency Test (UKBI). The purpose of this research is to evaluate the structure and linguistic aspects of the Sahabatku Indonesia Level 4 teaching materials by reviewing the integration of the material, clarity of discourse, vocabulary diversity, and grammatical accuracy used. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data were analyzed using an evaluation rubric based on CEFR B2 and UKBI components. The focus of the analysis includes the integration of presentation between units, the logical flow of learning, and the consistency of language use in supporting receptive and productive skills. The results show that the material presentation structure reflects a logical, progressive learning sequence and supports language skill mastery. The language elements used are generally appropriate for the intermediate level, although discrepancies were still found, such as the use of irrelevant illustrations and inconsistent language style. Furthermore, the syntactic complexity in some sections still needs to be adjusted to align with the abilities of B2 learners.

Abstract

This research focuses on the affixation process between Indonesian and Korean. This research was motivated by the mistakes and difficulties of Korean BIPA students regarding the formation and use of the affixes meN-, peN-, and di-. The data of this research were in the forms of Indonesian and Korean affixes found in I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokpokki. The qualitative descriptive approach was used with intralingual matching method to analyze the data. The data were collected using literature studies, data interpretation, and note-taking techniques. The data used in Indonesian were 196 data while in Korean 35 data. The results of the study found two differences and two similarities between Indonesian and Korean affixation. The affixation process in Indonesian causes changes in word classes, affix forms, and base word forms. While, in Korean just base word forms has changed. Another similarity is found in the form of Indonesian and Korean affixes which have the same form as other morphemes.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The study aims to comprehensively map the ability of BIPA students from Timor-Leste in writing biographical texts, while identifying their strengths and weaknesses in several key aspects: clarity of content, writing structure, creativity and language style, adherence to theme, and spelling and grammar accuracy. Methodology: Data were collected through a biographical writing task, which was assessed using a specially designed rubric. A mixed-method approach was applied: quantitative analysis was used to examine the distribution of ability levels across categories, while qualitative analysis explored detailed patterns of strengths and weaknesses for each aspect. Main Findings: The findings show that most students achieved a medium level for clarity of content (57.5%) and writing structure (60%). However, creativity (65% low) and spelling and grammar (52.5% low) emerged as the main challenges. Specific difficulties were identified in the formation of derived words, the use of temporal conjunctions, and the construction of complex sentences. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study places biographical writing as an instrument for diagnosing the writing skills of BIPA students in the sociolinguistic context of Timor-Leste, a domain that is rarely explored. This approach allows for a more detailed mapping of students’ strengths and weaknesses rather than just measuring final scores for pedagogical intervention. The implications suggest that BIPA teachers should prioritize fostering grammatical cohesion, enhancing creativity, and refining the reorientation section of biographical texts. The implementation of a scaffolding model progressing from guided examples to independent production is recommended to systematically develop students’ writing competence.

Abstract

Genre-based Approach (GBA) is a teaching method that has long been implemented in the English learning context as well as other foreign language learning contexts. In this study, we examined the application of GBA in an online BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing or Indonesian for Foreign Language Speakers) class by observing the classroom interaction patterns. The objective of this research is twofold. It is to investigate the extent to which the genre-based approach is applied and to discover the application of genre-based stages Building Knowledge of Field and Modelling in one online BIPA class. This study employed a qualitative discourse analytic method, specifically classroom discourse analysis following pedagogic register framework from systemic functional linguistics. The data were collected from the recordings of online BIPA class in two sessions, focusing on the stage of Building Knowledge of the Field and Modelling. The results indicate a variety of learning activities and a tendency of classifying a language skill to a specific stage from the GBA. These variations of activities and the classification of language skills suggest that there is a modification of the stage of genre-based approach in online BIPA class which is distinctive to that of other offline implementations.
