"SANGKHAKALA" refers to the shell horns that blown regularly to convey certain messages. In accordance with the meaning, this journal expected to become an instrument in the dissemination of archaeological information to the public which is published on an ongoing basis. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala is a peer-reviewed journal published biannual by the Balai Arkeologi Sumatera Utara in May and November. The first edition was published in 1997 and began to be published online in an e-journal form using the Open Journal System tool in 2015. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala aims to publish research papers, reviews and studies covering the disciplines of archeology, anthropology, history, ethnography, and culture in general.

Abstract

AbstractBuilt in 1902 as Purwakarta facility railway station, Depo of Purwakarta railway station, located in purwakarta sub-district, Purwakarta regency represents one of old colonial buildings. Maintaining its originality as a colonial building, this depo station is a rectangular gothic building. This building has more than just an ex-depo station with its historical values contained within. In recent developments, this depo building has experienced various changes of functionality and ownership.Buildings dated from the dutch colonialism era bear unique styles of shape perspective and typical architectural. A unique combination of europe-dominated and indonesian traditional styles creates an Indies architecture design.AbstrakDepo dari Stasiun Kereta Api Purwakarta diwakili salah satu bangunan kuno masa kolonial. Depo yang terletak di Kecamatan Purwakarta, Kabupaten Purwakarta. Dibangun pada tahun 1902 sebagai Stasiun Kereta Api fasilitas Purwakarta. Masih sebagai bangunan kolonial asli, memiliki denah empat persegipanjang dan dibangun dengan gaya gothic. Selain sebagai bekas stasiun kereta api Depo, itu menjadi saksi bisu sebagai sejarah di Purwakarta Kota, karena jenis tindakan peristiwa bersejarah di dalamnya. Dalam perkembangan selanjutnya, bangunan ini adalah perubahan fungsional dan kepemilikan.Bangunan kolonial memiliki keunikan tersendiri, jika dilihat dari perspektif bentuk dan gaya arsitektur yang khas. Dominasi pengaruh gaya Eropa dicampur dengan gaya tradisional Indonesia, membuat bangunan kolonial memiliki gaya arsitektur yang menggambarkan perpaduan antara arsitektur Eropa dan lokal atau gaya arsitektur Indies.

Abstract

AbstractGong musical instrument as an ornamental motif is found on ancient graves at Sutan Nasinok Harahap Site, Batang Onang Subdistrict, North Padang Lawas Regency, in North Sumatera Province. Sutan Nasinok Harahap site is an ancient grave complex located on a quite extensive landscape of about ± 7 Ha. The purpose is to find out the reasons for the use of gong decorative motifs and interpret the use of gong decorative motifs on the ancient graves at the site.The applied method is qualitative research with ethno-archaeology study. The study was used to interpret more deeply the ogung (gong) relief at the ancient grave site of Sutan Nasinok Harahap. Comparison with existing ethnographic data is expected to give a good picture about the meaning of ogung (gong) relief on ancient grave complex at Sutan Nasinok Harahap Site. The result shows that ogung (gong) relief on the ancient grave complex of Sutan Nasinok Harahap Site confirms the long journey of utilization of the instrument from the past until now. Its position on the tombs in particular also reveals that the figures who have been buried had carried out customary duties such as horjagodang during their lives – namely Siriaon (joyous event), Sipareon (to raise dignity), and even on the occasion of death or Siluluton (sad event) – carried out by their heirs. The existence of ogung (gong) reliefs and the like can also illustrate that the buried figure is a distinguished figure and had been given the title of adat king. AbstrakAlat musik gong sebagai motif hias terdapat pada kubur kuna di Situs Sutan Nasinok Harahap,Kecamatan Batang Onang, Kabupaten Padang Lawas Utara, Provinsi Sumatera Utara. Situs Sutan Nasinok Harahap merupakan kompleks kubur kuna yang terletak pada bentang lahan yang cukup luas sekitar ±7 Ha. Adapun tujuannya adalah mengetahui alasan pemanfaatan motif hias gong dan memaknai pemanfaatan motif hias gong pada kubur kuna di situs itu. Metode yang diterapkan adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan kajian etnoarkeologi. Kajian itu dimanfaatkan untuk memaknai lebih dalam tentang relief ogung (gong) di kompleks kubur kuna Situs Sutan Nasinok Harahap. Perbandingan dengan data etnografi yang ada, diharapkan dapat memberikan gambaran yang baik tentang makna relief ogung (gong) pada kompleks kubur kuna di Situs Sutan Nasinok Harahap. Hasilnya relief ogung (gong) di kompleks kubur kuna Situs Sutan Nasinok Harahap menjadi bukti perjalanan panjang pemanfaatan alat musik tersebut dari dahulu hingga kini. Posisinya pada bangunan kubur secara khusus dapat dimaknai bahwa tokoh yang dikuburkan telah melaksanakan kewajiban adat seperti horja godang semasa hidup (Siriaon/suka cita), Sipareon (penaik harkat martabat), dan bahkan saat kematian (Siluluton/duka cita) yang dilaksanakan oleh ahli warisnya. Keberadaan relief ogung (gong) dan sejenisnya juga dapat menggambarkan bahwa tokoh yang dikuburkan adalah tokoh terhormat dan telah mendapat gelar raja adat.

Abstract

AbstractMegalithic culture or tradition is generally accepted as an animism mixed with the long-disapeared Hindu-Buddha beliefs remains as Islam penetrated. The megalithic concept or cultural elements that have existed and rooted in the followers still show a connection with the past. The material culture contains positive values related with the people. Such values are traditional value, law, democracy, togetherness, and wisdom of the surrounding. Explorative-descriptive reseach method with inductive reasoning is used in this paper.AbstrakSecara umum budaya atau tradisi megalitik yang sering dikaitkan dengan kepercayaan animisme, yang sebagian bercampur dengan sisa-sisa kepercayaan Hindu-Buddha telah lama menghilang dalam kehidupan masyarakat Mandailing, bersamaan dengan masuknya pengaruh Islam. Namun demikian konsep maupun unsur budaya yang pernah ada dan mengakar pada masyarakatnya, menyebabkan sebagian bentuk budaya material maupun tradisinya masih menampakkan hubungan dengan budaya masa lalunya. Di dalam budaya materiil tersebut terkandung nilai-nilai budaya yang positif berkaitan dengan kehidupan masyarakatnya. Nilai-nilai itu meliputi nilai adat, hukum, demokrasi, gotong-royong, dan kearifan terhadap alam lingkungannya. Penulisan bertipe eksploratif-deskriptif menggunakan alur penalaran induktif.

Abstract

AbstrakŚrīwijaya adalah suatu kerajaan maritim yang pengaruhnya meliputi kawasan yang luas di sekitar Selat Malaka. Kepentingan utama dari kerajaan ini adalah penguasaan jalur pelayaran dan perdagangan yang melalui Selat Malaka. Bagaimanapun, baik sumber sejarah maupun arkeologis mengindikasikan bahwa pengaruh niaga dan politik Śrīwijaya juga meliputi kawasan pedalaman dan pantai barat Sumatera. Hal ini mungkin berkaitan dengan kepentingan Śrīwijaya untuk mengamankan aliran mata dagangan terutama kamper dan kemenyan yang hanya dihasilkan oleh kawasan di baratlaut Danau Toba dan sekitarnya.

Abstract

AbstractNow, traces of free trade in the archipelago can not be separated from the past maritime trade activities, especially trade relations with Chinesse people. Past trading activity on the east coast of North Sumatera can be traced through the rest of the remains of material culture objects, particularly objects of material culture with respect to trading actvities. This can be traced through the remains of material cultural objects found on the site of Kota Cina dan Kompei Island located in the east coast of North Sumatera.

AbstractSaur Matua is a funeral rites in Batak tradition for old man / woman who died, leaved children who all of them have been married, and have given grandchilds. It’s very interesting that saur matua make a controversy, because some batak people communities have said that it’s not important to save this cultural product. So this writing want to observate how useful saur matua based on its local genius since the past untill now.
