Abstract

This research focused on how technology could help improve local government performance. There are five factors in assessing the IT capacity of information; security, financial support, legislative support, and commitment to the organization. Many variables affect the ability to support the five characteristics. The population of this study was all work units responsible for the local government's performance in Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The sample was randomly selected to assess the effect of e-government in improving local government performance. Every year the work unit must report to the region. Regression analysis was employed in this study by using SEM-PLS software. The data showed that the variables of executive competence, financial Support, information security, legislative Support, and organizational commitment affected information capacity by 59.4%. The function of e-government in improving local government performance must be realized. For e-government to improve the performance of local governments, the two provincial/central governments must conduct socialization with local governments. Limitations of the study included the limited sample size, which might not represent the original status of citizens, and the short study period.

Abstract

The implementation of Islamic Sharia in Aceh has experienced dynamics since it was first implemented in early 2000—the presence of pro and contra attitudes from the community towards the interpretation and existence of Islamic Sharia. As a result, a model for resolving sharia violations based on local values often emerges. This study departs from the central question of why the people of Aceh often choose local deals in determining several breaches of Islamic law in society. This study seeks to analyze the resolution of violations of Islamic law in the border areas of Aceh with local consensus values. The phrase border Aceh refers to a multi-identity place (ethnicity and religion). This study combines two concepts between local wisdom and Islamic law. The research method uses a qualitative approach with grounded research. The study results show that people who live on the border of Aceh, especially several districts on the West Coast of Aceh, often choose a local (non-Sharia) approach in cases of violations of Islamic Sharia. Settlements with local values are considered more readily accepted by the community. Interestingly, this study found that the role of local wisdom can also reduce the number of violations of Islamic law in the border communities of Aceh.

Abstract

Listening is one of the language skills that students must master. However, it is difficult for students to master it. Some factors make it difficult for students to master it, and one of them is that the method or media used by lecturers in the teaching and learning process is not suitable or comfortable. This study aimed to determine if the English study program students of BBG University who are taught listening skills through watching YouTube Channel Practical Psychology are more successful than those who are taught listening skills without watching YouTube Channel Practical Psychology. This research employed quantitative methods and a pre-experiment design with a single group: pre-test - post-test. The population of this study was the entire third-semester English department students at BBG University, was 26 students divided into one class. The necessary data was obtained through testing, and the obtained data was analyzed using the N-Gain Score. N-Gain Score was calculated to be 0.41. It indicated a disparity between the students’ listening abilities before being taught via the YouTube Channel Applied Psychology. After they were taught by watching the YouTube Channel Practical Psychology, the difference was 41%. It means that the students’ listening competence increased by 41% after they were taught through watching YouTube Channel Practical Psychology.

Abstract

Studying successful entrepreneurs is an exciting focus for policymakers, professionals, and academics. It presents different research results so that researchers fill the gap by using student respondents to examine the essential aspects that can drive the desire to become entrepreneurs. The researcher used a cross-sectional approach with student respondents who had attended entrepreneurship courses to discover this aspect. The number of respondents who filled out a structured questionnaire using the Google form was 129 students—the data analysis technique used the Partial Least Square structural equation model. The study results showed that 9 (nine) essential aspects could increase students' desire to become entrepreneurs. This research only used student respondents to examine essential aspects that could encourage the desire to become entrepreneurs. The cross-sectional approach was also tested simultaneously during the second wave of Covid-19. The research results have implications for developing essential aspects for students to become entrepreneurs.

Abstract

A simple theoretical model predicts that when a mother gives birth to a child of her preferred sex, parents will likely invest more resources in that child, leading to more significant human capital. This bias can result in unequal treatment and opportunities, affecting a child’s long-term development. This study investigates how gender preference influences cognitive ability between sons and daughters in Indonesia. This study utilizes longitudinal data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey 1 and 5, analyzed using the Ordinary Least Square method. The results indicate that daughters whose mothers had a son preference had 0.259 points higher cognitive scores. This finding is attributed to the sample distribution, revealing that daughters of mothers who prefer sons were mainly those without male siblings, allowing them to receive equal input from their parents without competing with boys. The heterogeneity analysis further revealed that daughters from disadvantaged backgrounds, such as those living in rural areas and born to less educated mothers, are disproportionately affected by son preference. In conclusion, it appears that children’s family background and sibling composition can significantly impact the disparity in cognitive achievement between sons and daughters.

Abstract

Workplace bullying can result in serious consequences for both employees and employers. Unfortunately, despite the guarantee of safe employment, workplace harassment, violations of employment rights, and bullying continue to occur within organizations. This study investigated the relationships and pathways between workplace bullying and job burnout in insurance company employees. The study consisted of 189 employees. The data were collected using a sociodemographic data questionnaire, the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised, and Maslach Burnout Inventory Scale. The model was tested using path analysis techniques within structural equation modeling. The analysis results demonstrated a strong positive correlation between workplace bullying and job burnout. The study revealed that assigning underperforming or impossible tasks, setting unachievable goals, and excessive workloads are indicators of workplace bullying. Hostile acts such as spreading rumors, speaking maliciously, ignoring someone intentionally, and teasing someone also contributed to diminished personal achievements and underperformance. Intimidation tactics, such as recalling mistakes or domineering behavior, also led to job burnout. The study's findings suggest that employers should be aware of workplace bullying's harmful effects and take measures to prevent it from occurring to protect their employees' well-being and organizational success.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the models, methods and approaches used in multicultural education in Indonesia. The research method used is systematic literature-based qualitative research, namely an approach that manages data by reducing data, presenting, and verifying, as well as concluding data, not using mathematical calculations and statistics. The results of the research found that, first, multicultural education is very important to be implemented in Indonesia, because the community is multi-ethnic and consists of various ethnicities, religions, cultures and regional languages. Second, the models, methods and approaches that are suitable for implementing multicultural education in Indonesia are inclusive education models through cooperative learning and role-playing methods and approaches. The study concludes that multicultural education in Indonesia is very important to be implemented through the integration of inclusivism values to students through classroom interaction using cooperative learning and role-playing.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out declarative memory recalls during online classes. Using a qualitative approach, the instruments used were simple and difficult word-sets. The data were collected through Zoom and WhatsApp platforms and later analyzed using interactive analysis. The results revealed two dissonances encountered: Informational Loss and Built-Up Dissonance. Initially, in the simple-word set, the majority of the students encountered Informational Loss 74 times (after 30 seconds) increasing to 97 times (after 30 minutes). In difficult word sets, it occurred 144 times, increasing to 154 times within identical spans. Regarding Built-Up Dissonance, it occurred 19 times (after 30 seconds), decreasing to 13 times (after 30 minutes) in simple word sets, and 27 times (after 30 seconds), increasing to 30 times (after 30 minutes) in difficult word sets. Surprisingly, it was found that in the recall test, linguistic buffering was generally employed instead of visual buffering. This finding helps teachers understand that virtual learning prompts need to be accompanied by activities involving procedural memory to minimize dissonances.
