Abstract

Academic studies on newspaper discourse have focused primarily on the structure of news items. Research on an argumentative discourse of newspaper editorials is understudied. By using the sociocognitive theory of knowledge and opinion as the theoretical basis, this article aims to analyze the argumentative discourse constructed in “The 9/30 Tragedy” editorial published in The Jakarta Post and to discuss whether the arguments in the text constitute knowledge or solely opinions of the editorial team on the defunct Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). The eclectic research method used the pragma-dialectical model of argumentation supported by intertextuality and vocabulary analysis. The findings reveal that the editorial has a standpoint that the tragedy of September 30, 1965, has led the course of Indonesia’s history for the worst tragedy and that the argumentation is manifested in three stages: confrontational stage, argumentation stage, and concluding stage. Acting as the protagonist, the editorial team maneuvers strategically by quoting other voices and using an evaluative lexical repertoire to support their arguments criticizing Soeharto’s leadership legacy. Overall, the editorial seems to reconstruct mental models for the readers by questioning the reliability of the military-dictated textbooks about the 9/30 Tragedy, thereby reshaping the historical knowledge about the calamity, which is justifiable.

Abstract

CSR as a form of corporate activity always demands social responsibility from companies. However, considering that the various types of CSR policies that currently exist have not been able to be implemented optimally by corporations, CSR policies need to be evaluated for systematic improvement. This research aims to determine the challenges companies face and how CSR policies can meet the policy evaluation criteria in Dumai City. This research uses qualitative research methods that explore challenges and evaluate CSR policies. Data analysis was conducted through the Nvivo 12 Plus application, sourced from interviews with each actor in Dumai City. This research found that the challenges companies face in CSR policies include the lack of a clear framework, lack of transparency and accountability, and difficulty balancing economic considerations with long-term needs. Then the evaluation of CSR policies in Dumai City is dominated by indicators of adequacy (21,62%) and equity (21,62%), followed by effectiveness (18,92%), responsiveness (16,22%), efficiency (13,51%), and accuracy (8.11%) which require optimal evaluation so that unclear rules regarding CSR policies can be improved systematically and able to achieve the important goals expected in the public sector.

Abstract

Internal displacement is a global phenomenon that generates massive effects on humanity. The Philippines is one country prone to internal displacement, ranging from natural causes to conflict-induced displacement. The armed conflict that transpired in an urban city in Mindanao, Philippines, produced unimaginable outcomes for the lives of internally displaced families (IDFs). Thus, exploring their experiences yields a broader grasp of internal displacement. Since the topic of internal displacement is intermittently concentrated, the study could provide supplementary literature in the field of social sciences, particularly in studying displacement. The study utilized phenomenological inquiry to delve into the lived experiences and coping mechanisms of the IDFs during their displacement. Through Colaizzi’s thematic analysis, findings were depicted in six (6) emergent themes. As to the participants’ experiences, the themes were: Terror Brings Deep Stress, Inhumanity of War, and Displacement in Laden with Adversities. The themes detailed the inhumane repercussions of conflict-induced displacement. Nevertheless, the IDFs remarkably subdued these adversities through their coping mechanisms, which were thematically described as Patience Beats Obstacles, Positivity Survives Difficulty, and Tightened Faith.

Abstract

One of the methods gaining popularity in the context of teaching in recent years is flipped classroom instruction (FCI). The FCI encourages EFL learners to maximize their time away from class by using products of advanced technologies. Owing to this fact, the researchers conducted a study on the issue of Students’ writing performance and their attitudes about the use of technology. A mixed-method study was used to investigate students’ writing achievement and their attitudes to web-based instruction in the form of Flipped classroom instruction. Quantitative data was collected through survey questionnaires, while qualitative data was gained from interviews. The investigation on flipped classroom instruction was conducted at three State Islamic Universities in Indonesia. The questionnaires were distributed to EFL students at these three State Islamic universities to identify students’ experience in learning writing by using flipped classroom instruction. There were 198 students involved in this research. Also, twelve English lecturers from those three universities were interviewed. Findings suggested that most students had a positive attitude toward flipped classroom instruction. Although flipped classroom interaction does not guarantee the improvement of students’ writing performance, it is believed that flipped classroom instruction supports students to have a meaningful and effective learning experience.

Abstract

Higher education, as the continuation and culmination of the formal education process, has a role and responsibility to optimize character building based on the nation’s philosophy, namely Pancasila. Indonesia today is far from Pancasila’s hopes. This article explored the landscape of internalizing the nation’s philosophical values through exposure to concepts, practices, and challenges at UIN Ar-Raniry. This research used qualitative methods with a naturalistic approach carried out at Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The sample in this study was taken using a non-probability sampling technique. Meanwhile, data collection was carried out using triangulation techniques. The data were analyzed using inductive analysis techniques with an interactive qualitative approach, comprising data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The research results showed that the process of internalizing the nation’s philosophical values at UIN Ar-Raniry was integrated with the tri-dharma of higher education. The values that were built included fundamental, instrumental, and practical values, which were crystallized into five basic character values: religion, nationalism, independence, mutual cooperation, and integrity. Additionally, the university strengthened character through religious moderation activities, Ma’had al-Jami’ah, and other activities supporting student character building, as evidenced by certificates that were integrated with the academic system through a Diploma Accompanying Certificate, also known as SKPI.

Abstract

The current developments in Information Technology (IT) should not only be utilized by the public and the private sectors but also by all parties effectively. The government must also be able to take advantage of these advances in many ways, such as in providing government services. The role of IT in managing government has now become an essential part of the society. This study examines the people's expectations in Melikan Village and focuses on using IT advances to create an independent village. The author then draws upon SDG theories to delineate the service transformation process. It is a qualitative study consisting of primary and secondary data. The data collection techniques used in this study include in-depth interviews, FGD, observations, and document analysis. The findings show that IT has become a vital need for the people in Melikan, but the village government fails to meet those expectations. The study suggests that the local government needs technological innovation to develop Melikan Village and add more personnel to help with government services.

Abstract

This study described the religious attitudes influenced by the Jawi Script upon people living in the Seulimeum Subdistrict of Aceh Besar District, Indonesia. The data for this qualitative study were gathered through interviews and observations that included three activities: behavioral observation, direct questioning, and direct disclosure. A checklist and field notes accompanied observations, while direct questioning and direct disclosure involved unstructured interviews with eight respondents. The data was then qualitatively analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques. The study's findings suggested that the Jawi script instructional process had influenced respondents’ religious attitudes toward aqidah, ibadah, morals, and social society. In the field of aqidah, Jawi script instructional process strengthened the aqidah that adheres to the creed of Ahlusunnah wal Jama’ah. They also rejected another aqidah, armed with knowledge from the Jawi Script. Religious attitudes also were reflected in ibadah activities under the knowledge learned from the Shafi'i school of thought's Jawi Script. Regarding morals and social society, Jawi script instructional process strengthened husband-wife relationships, strengthened social traditions with Islamic nuances, and fostered social unity.

Abstract

Chinese university students’ use of social media is becoming increasingly diverse, and students from private universities in China have different group characteristics than those from public universities. This research endeavoured to establish a comprehensive user profile of Chinese private university students by examining their social media usage patterns. The purpose was to gain profound insights into the distinctive attributes of students in China’s private universities within the context of the current era characterised by extensive data availability. This study employed a questionnaire-based research approach to acquire a dataset consisting of 673 instances of social media usage among students enrolled in private universities in China. Subsequently, exploratory factor analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, extracting five (5) categorical feature tags. Combined with the extracted feature tags and the usage status and perception dimension data, the K-means cluster analysis method was used to perform rapid clustering to derive four (4) differentiated groups comprising information exchange-oriented users, instrument-oriented users, dependent-oriented users and entertainment-oriented users. Furthermore, thorough analysis and description of the essential attributes for these 4 user profile categories have been conducted by incorporating the fundamental user information.

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution era is a time that requires the connection between technology and various aspects of life, including education. But there are still many educational institutions that have not responded well regarding the use of technology in learning, therefore this study aimed to determine the use of E-campus as an online learning media and Arabic learning evaluation media in higher education. The research was conducted at Islamic State University of Batusangkar, the approach used was quantitative with a survey research design. The results of the study stated that E-campus could be used as an alternative in carrying out Arabic language learning, completeness of features, ease of access, and clarity of access as evidence that E-campus was effectively used for online classes in Arabic language learning, until now no features have been found in E-Campus that can be used to evaluate and measure Arabic speaking skills. The utilization of E-campus in Arabic language learning brings great benefits and influences for lecturers and students. The limitation of this study is that researchers did not design an E-campus platform that has complete features to measure four Arabic speaking skills for students, therefore future researchers can conduct research aimed at creating an E-campus model that has more complete features.

Abstract

The ongoing conflict in Watuhputih has escalated into a contentious and complex issue that continues to capture public attention. The debates have given rise to a fierce clash of ideas, concepts, and interpretations of laws, ultimately leading to numerous lawsuits. This study uses a qualitative research approach with Wehr and Bartos analysis to analyze conflict dynamics in the cement factory conflict case in Rembang, Central Java. The qualitative method used a case study. Data collection techniques used in-depth interviews with sources from 20 informants and documentation from various mass media. The results of this study indicate that conflict dynamics are divided into pre-conflict, confrontation, and crisis. This study concludes that the conflict in Rembang has turned into an ideological conflict. Each group claims that the ideology understood the most correct between environmental sustainability, traditional and modern, capitalist. A dark history of conflict and prolonged dynamics causes ideological conflicts. The record of the conflict’s journey into a social movement in Rembang is a series of conflicts between the community and small-scale mining companies previously in conflict areas from the 90th year.
