Abstract

This research explains the roles and strategies of influencer artists who collaborate with presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs in conducting political campaigns through digital media in the 2024 general elections. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. The data collection technique in this research is a literature study. The finding of this research is that influencer artists supporting Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka are dominant in taking on the icon role in their digital political campaigns. Meanwhile, influencer artists supporting Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD are more predominant in the role of messengers. Furthermore, in their digital political campaign strategies, these influencer artists use ways to create creative content, mobilise fanbases incorporated in their social media, conduct giveaways and carry out live streaming routines on their respective digital platforms and other people's channels. Therefore, this study explains that the power of digital media, coupled with a recognised figure in the channel, significantly impacts electoral politics if utilised in a directed and measured manner.

Abstract

Ciasmara Village in Bogor Regency offers cultural attractions like Celempungan music and the Seren Taun ritual, which are valuable assets within a Community-Based Tourism (CBT) model. This study analysed the communication network managing these events, emphasising the identification and role of central actors in local tourism governance. Using a descriptive quantitative approach and social network analysis, data were collected from 21 appointed tourism managers. UCINET VI software was employed to measure degree, closeness, betweenness, and eigenvector centrality. Results show that actor centrality significantly shapes the effectiveness of the CBT network. Otang Celempung emerged as the most central figure, actively facilitating communication and decision-making. Uday, acting as a liaison, connects otherwise separate groups. The findings highlight the need to strengthen the capacity of key actors to foster collaboration, preserve cultural heritage, and promote sustainable rural tourism.

Abstract

Radio media still play an important role as a source of public information, especially in conveying real-time traffic conditions. However, in today's digital era, the question arises as to how relevant the traffic congestion information conveyed by radio still is to the public. This study refers to the uses and gratifications theory, which emphasises that audiences choose media based on their ability to meet information needs. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method of 300 respondents, namely private vehicle users in Surabaya and its surroundings. The analysis focuses on the dimensions of accuracy, relevance, novelty of information, and listener loyalty. The results show that accurate, relevant, and up-to-date information about traffic conditions has a significant effect on continued listening. In addition, social interaction through the "Listener Reports" programme also strengthens audience loyalty to Radio Suara Surabaya. These findings confirm that radio remains relevant in meeting the information needs of the public in the digital age, especially in the context of traffic information.

Abstract

The Caci Dance culture from East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, is a cultural performing art and is basically a form of war dance performed by the younger generation based on the principles of brotherhood and mutual respect as a form of gratitude. The purpose of this research is to analyse how the Caci Dance as a form of art-based communication instils the meaning of collective cultural values for the Manggarai people in Flores. This research uses a qualitative approach and ethnographic methods. Primary data was obtained through in-depth semi-structured interviews with several stakeholders such as traditional village heads, religious leaders and the government. The findings from this study are that Caci dance as a performance art also has an entertainment function in addition to conveying social messages. In the Caci Dance, the message to be conveyed, apart from providing entertainment through dance and musical performances, is also related to moral encouragement to pay more attention to sustainable efforts in preserving the Earth we inhabit. On the other hand, the Caci Dance depicts the cultural values of collectivity held by the Manggarai community which can also describe the characteristics of the community. The collective values believed by the Manggarai community as their characteristics are the values of unity and mutual respect which are also seen from the process of involvement as an effort to preserve the Caci Dance.

Abstract

Currently, strategic communication in supporting national defence policy faces increasingly complex challenges amid geopolitical dynamics, technological developments, and changing patterns of security threats. In reality, coordination between institutions is still a major challenge, especially in ensuring the integration of messages and synergy of cross-sector communication. In addition, the rampant disinformation and digital propaganda also threaten national security and stability, thus requiring strategic efforts to counter negative narratives that can weaken support for defence policies. How is strategic communication designed and implemented by the Ministry of Defence to support national defence policies? The purpose of this study is to analyse and identify the role of strategic communication in supporting the implementation of national defence policies, with a focus on the effectiveness of information delivery, coordination between stakeholders, and mobilisation of public support. The theory used in this research is Strategic Communication Theory developed by Hallahan, Holtzhausen, van Ruler, Verčič, dan Sriramesh 2007. The research method employed is a literature study through reviewing, analysing and synthesising various relevant literature sources. The results generated found that there are several indicators to realise strategic communication in supporting the National Defence policy and that is by integrating communication adaptability, inter-Institutional Coordination, Effectiveness of Communication Channels and Public participation, and involvement so that strategic communication can be an effective tool in strengthening the legitimacy and implementation of national defence policy. The research indicators are communication planning, target audience determination, message framing & narrative development, channel effectiveness, inter-agency coordination, evaluation and feedback mechanism

Abstract

This study examined the impact of transcendental communication on the emotional well-being of older adults in Indonesia. Employing a case study approach within an elderly Islamic study group (pengajian), data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and participatory observations involving productive older adults, health workers, and community leaders. The findings indicate that transcendental communication, including practices such as communal prayer, Quran memorisation, and in-depth dialogue, has a significantly positive effect on the emotional well-being of older adults. Participants who engaged in these practices reported reduced stress and anxiety, enhanced self-awareness, and greater optimism and inner calm. This study underscores the potential of transcendental communication as an effective strategy for enhancing the emotional well-being of older adults in Indonesia. It provides policy recommendations to support its broader implementation.

Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) not only depend on regulations, but also on effective communication and meaning-making processes to build a consistent safety culture through information dissemination, training, and continuous education. This study analysed the alignment among workers in raising awareness of occupational safety and health at PT Telkom Akses Regional 4 Central Java-DIY between field and non-field workers. This study used the concept of ‘sensemaking’, which is derived from organizational communication emphasizing the role of transformational leadership in instilling safety values, combined with the process of meaning-making through seven dimensions (based on identity construction, retrospective, perceptible environment, social, sustainable, focused on and by extracted cues, driven by feasibility rather than accuracy), enabling workers to internalise risks based on experience and incidents. This research employed a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis at PT Telkom Akses. The research findings indicate that the main challenges in safety culture transformation in companies include the gap between formal policies and field practices and the tendency of workers to ignore procedures because they are considered impractical. The integration of participatory strategies sharing experiences, technical improvements to increase motivation and participation, sharing workplace accident experiences, and transformational leadership (peer mentoring, gamification, storytelling) along with measurable indicators (Key Performance Indicators) based on OSH strengthen message cohesion, supported by double-loop learning for preventive incident documentation and critical reflection, resulting in OSH transformation as a collective responsibility through the internalization of safety values as professional identity.

Abstract

In the digital age, social media platforms like Instagram have become significant tools for grassroots activism, particularly in addressing environmental and gender issues. In Indonesia, where climate change intersects with low levels of literacy, efforts to empower mothers with climate knowledge are increasingly vital. Mothers are often at the forefront of managing domestic and environmental challenges, yet their access to climate literacy remains limited. This study aims to analyse the literacy discourse and climate crisis issues raised by @bbbbookclub in the #ClimateLiteracyforMothers campaign on Instagram. Using a qualitative approach and applying Marie-Anne Paveau’s discourse analysis, the research is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of cyberculture and digital activism. The findings reveal four dominant discourses: the urgency of positioning mothers as agents of social change; critical reflections on environmental policy and patriarchal-capitalist systems; the use of religious and local cultural narratives to communicate environmental values; and lifestyle transformation as a form of climate action. These discourses illustrate how digital activism can shape new forms of environmental engagement among marginalised communities. The study also identifies elements of ecofeminist ideology that underpin the campaign, highlighting how women’s empowerment and environmental advocacy can converge in online spaces.

Abstract

This article analysed the controversial public statement made by political consultant Hasan Nasbi, “just cook the pig’s head”, in response to an act of symbolic intimidation toward a journalist. Using Michel Foucault’s discourse theory as the primary analytical framework—focusing on statement analysis, historical context, and power relations—this study investigates how language operates as a mechanism of power that normalises symbolic violence, marginalises dissent, and sustains hegemonic authority. The findings show that Nasbi’s language is not merely rhetorical but functions ideologically: it delegitimises journalistic victimhood, redefines social norms of seriousness and threat, and enacts a regime of truth that reinforces the asymmetry of power in public discourse. Drawing from contemporary discourse studies, the study argues that such statements reproduce a surveillance-based form of control, wherein symbolic aggression is trivialised, and political accountability is eroded. This research contributes to the growing field of critical discourse analysis by demonstrating how everyday political utterances carry deep ideological functions and shape the boundaries of public meaning, legitimacy, and justice.

Abstract

Saeed Roustayi’s Leila’s Brothers (2022) sparked significant controversy in Iran following its international success, culminating in criminal charges against the movie’s director and producer. While public discourse largely focused on the film’s portrayal of poverty and patriarchy, this study goes beyond it and argues that its narrative structure subtly encodes a critique of the authoritarian regime in Iran. Applying classical structuralist models– Todorov’s three-act structure and Propp’s character archetypes, this research analysed how the film’s narrative mechanisms reflect dissent against entrenched authority. The study focused particularly on the portrayal of Esmail, the family’s patriarch, whose obsession with power and status parallels the perceived characteristics of Iran’s Supreme Leader. Through this allegorical construction, the narrative conveys a veiled political commentary that may explain the film’s censorship. Leila, the central character, challenges familial and societal norms, positioning her as a catalyst for change within a rigid system. The film’s closure, juxtaposing the quiet death of Esmail with a young girl’s birthday celebration, symbolises generational transition and the fading legitimacy of traditional power structures. While this analysis draws on classical structuralist models, it contextualises them within Iran’s contemporary sociopolitical environment. In particular, the film’s portrayal of gender, authority, and resistance reflects the ethos of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. This study demonstrates how narrative structures, though seemingly neutral, can encode political dissent in contexts of censorship, offering new insights into resistance media in authoritarian settings.
