Jurnal Studi Komunikasi (Indonesian Journal of Communications Studies), one of the journals published by Faculty of Communications Science Dr. Soetomo University, was established in January 2017. Jurnal Studi Komunikasi a double blind peer-reviewed journal, explores critical and constructive inquiries into a wide range of fields of study on Communication Science that include culture, religion, media, gender, public policy, development, environment, disaster, and tourism, with emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches: Communication Studies. It addresses issues with multi-perspectives view. Each volume of the journal discusses a specific theme based on “Call for Papers”, through which scholars, from diverse disciplines, are invited to contribute. Jurnal Studi Komunikasi published on March, July, and November.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of public sector organisational communication in poverty alleviation efforts in West Seram Regency (SBB) through the lenses of Social Capital Theory, Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC), and network governance. Poverty is conceptualised as a multidimensional issue requiring cross-sectoral coordination and multi-actor collaboration. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach centred on document analysis of the 2025–2029 Regional Poverty Alleviation Plan (RPKD) and relevant scholarly sources. The findings indicate that communication effectiveness is shaped by levels of trust and inter-actor networks (social capital), the consistency and integration of cross-agency messaging (IMC), and the capacity for horizontal and vertical coordination within a network governance framework. Sectoral and administrative communication patterns tend to produce fragmented programmes and policy overlap. Therefore, strengthening collaborative and participatory communication mechanisms is essential to achieving more integrated, effective, and sustainable poverty governance in West Seram Regency.

Abstract

This research analysed the hybrid forms of communication between Generation X and Generation Z in campaigns promoting adherence to Pancasila values within student organisations, as well as their implications for the process of re-actualising national ideology in the digital era. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach and was conducted in Tuban Regency, East Java. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with six faculty advisers (Generation X) and six student organisation leaders (Generation Z), as well as through participant observation and digital documentation of face-to-face forums and organisational social media. Data analysis was carried out inductively and thematically using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. The findings indicate that intergenerational communication occurs through a hybrid communication pattern that combines offline reflective forums with online collaborative activities. Generation X serves as the guardian of the legitimacy of Pancasila values and their moral depth, while Generation Z functions as the translator of these values into digital expressions and social action. Despite perceptual tensions regarding the ways in which ideological values are conveyed, the interaction between the two groups resulted in a convergence of meaning that enriched the process of value internalisation. The digital campaign themed Pancasila and Environmental Sustainability showed an increase in student participation of up to 64% and a digital engagement rate of 8.7%, indicating the success of an adaptive and collaborative communication model. Theoretically, this research expands the application of intergenerational communication theory in the context of ideological education. Socially, the hybrid communication model has proven capable of strengthening the national identity of the younger generation by presenting Pancasila as a dynamic, reflective, and relevant life narrative in the digital age.

Abstract

This paper analyses the representation of the celebrity phenomenon in the Yowis Ben tetralogy (2018, 2019, 2021), which has become a fundamental aspect of modern Indonesian film. The researcher used a qualitative narrative analysis approach to examine how celebrity culture is portrayed in these films. This analysis examined story structure, character development, and visual components, highlighting the journey of a group of young individuals from the Javanese Arek Culture as they strive for popularity while preserving their cultural identity. The results indicate that this tetralogy positions celebrity culture as a remedy for desires related to social status, physical allure, affluence, and influence. The celebrity persona depicted in these films is intricately linked to the context of Javanese Arek culture, particularly in Malang, Indonesia. Cultural components, including language and intricate characters, enhance the representation of celebrity production. These films explain the intricacies of celebrity life while examining the motivations for attaining recognition, the techniques employed to gain it, the efforts to sustain a public persona, and the challenges encountered by celebrities.

Abstract

AI is a system designed to help work become more effective and efficient. In the broadcasting industry, AI is mentioned as having potential that deserves attention. This study examined the adoption of AI in Indonesia’s broadcasting industry, addressing the research gap in emerging markets by analysing its operational impacts and ethical risks. Through a descriptive qualitative, alongside systematic reviews of Scopus, Web of Science, and Garuda databases, this research identified how Indonesia’s unique media landscape shapes AI integration. The findings revealed that while AI enhances efficiency, its ethical challenges necessitate localised solutions, leading to a proposed ‘Dual Accountability Model’, which reduces violations by 31% by balancing automation with human oversight. These results urge policymakers to develop KPI-certified AI governance frameworks and provide broadcasters with strategies for the ethical implementation of AI, offering a replicable model for ASEAN nations navigating similar technological transitions.

Abstract

The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is highly complex. The initial attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, followed by Israel's counterattack, captured significant international attention. However, numerous accusations have been directed at Israel, which is increasingly perceived as an actor in the escalation of the conflict. This study aimed to examine how Israel, through its official media platform Gov.il, engages in media framing with the purpose of image restoration. The data in this study were collected by analysing 17 news articles published on the Gov.il website using the keywords ‘“Israel image repair Gaza’,,” ‘“Hasbara communication Gaza,’,” ‘“IDF and civilians Gaza’,,” ‘“Gov.il narrative framing’,,” and ‘“Genocide accusation response’” from October 7, 2023, to August 30, 2024. This study applies the data analysis method of Miles and Huberman to address the research questions. The findings highlight two key points: Israel’s image restoration strategy in Gov.il media uses (1) a reduced offensiveness approach, specifically through the variants of bolstering and differentiation, and (2) evasion of responsibility through the variant of defensibility. This study also aimed to identify Israel's image restoration strategies in repairing and maintaining its reputation before the international community, especially regarding Israel being accused of committing acts of genocide in Gaza by the international community and countries in the world in the 2023 Israel-Palestine conflict. This research uses a qualitative method by collecting news articles from Gov.il media using the keyword "Gaza’" and analysing them to obtain patterns of Israel's image restoration strategies in the media. The results show that the framing of news about Israel is positive by showing that Israel has good initiatives toward civilian victims and that Israel is a country that prioritises humanitarian actions. Furthermore, this study also proves that the pattern of Israel's image restoration tends to use the strategy of reducing forgiveness, especially using bolstering techniques, namely strengthening the positive feelings of the audience, compensation, reducing attack, differentiation, distinguishing their actions from other actions, and attacking the counterattacking the accuser.

Abstract

Abstract The Motivating Language Theory (MLT) offers a robust framework for analysing how strategic verbal communication can motivate individuals and enhance organisational performance. This study answers the research questions of identifying the profile and characteristics of the MLT research literature, examining the theories and variables used in MLT studies in organisational communication, and mapping existing research to highlight gaps and suggest future research directions. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA protocol, 77 articles from the Scopus database were analysed with Microsoft Excel and VOS viewer. Findings reveal a growing interest in MLT, particularly in the private sector, with most studies employing quantitative methods. The review highlights diverse theoretical integrations, identifies research gaps, and recommends future studies in cross-cultural contexts, high-pressure industries, and remote or hybrid work settings to advance both theoretical and practical insights in organisational communication.

Abstract

Social stigma remains the main obstacle in the process of social reintegration despite successful deradicalisation programs. Former terrorism convicts face a dual challenge: the need to build a new positive identity while confronting strong societal resistance. This study aimed to understand the process of self-identity formation among former terrorism convicts through symbolic interactionism and self-reflection, using the self-concept theories of George Herbert Mead and Anthony Giddens as this study’s theoretical framework. This research employed an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach to explore the subjective experiences of three former terrorism convicts who have participated in a deradicalisation program by the National Counterterrorism Agency for at least two years. Data were obtained through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analysed step by step to identify individual experiences related to social stigma, symbolic interactionism strategies, and self-reflection in building a new identity. The findings reveal that the success of social reintegration for former terrorism convicts does not solely depend on ideological change but also on their ability to negotiate a new identity through effective communication with society. This process involves identity narratives constructed through supportive social interactions and deep self-reflection. This study provides practical contributions to the development of more adaptive deradicalisation policies and enriches theoretical studies on communication in identity transformation.

Abstract

The digital era has transformed political marketing through the collaboration of social media, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI), each of which offers complementary roles in shaping campaign strategies. This study investigates how these technologies are reconfiguring political communication by enabling data-driven, emotionally resonant, and personalised interactions between candidates and voters. The analysis is theoretically grounded in Political Market-Oriented Theory, which explains the strategic adaptation of political actors to voter demands; affective publics, which highlights how emotional expression and virality shape engagement in digital platforms; and surveillance capitalism, which frames the commodification of personal data and algorithmic control within political messaging practices. Using a qualitative analytical bibliometric approach, the study employs three main tools: VOSviewer for keyword co-occurrence analysis, R Studio for conceptual structure and thematic evolution mapping, and CiteSpace for co-citation clustering and timeline visualisation. The dataset consists of Scopus-indexed journal articles from 2015 to 2024 and is included in the open access. The study places a particular focus on non-Western democracies, with Indonesia as a case study, to highlight contextual challenges such as digital inequality and low digital literacy. The findings highlight strategic benefits such as targeted messaging, voter segmentation, and real-time feedback. However, they also raise ethical issues, including algorithmic bias, digital surveillance, and the threat of misinformation to democratic integrity. This study contributes to closing the literature gap on AI-based political marketing in emerging democracies and proposes normative guidelines for the ethical, inclusive, and transparent use of digital technologies in political campaigns.

Abstract

This study employed a bibliometric approach to analyse research trends in health communication campaigns in the digital era from 2015 to 2023. Focusing on specific search criteria, a dataset of 64 scholarly articles was extracted and analysed to understand the development of scientific publications in health communication campaigns. The bibliometric analysis provides insights into the citation trends and collaborations between authors and institutions on the discussed topics. This study incorporates thematic analysis to understand the context of digital communication content in health campaigns. Using Biblioshiny software and Google Spreadsheets, the bibliometric data is presented to offer a comprehensive overview of the research topic. This analysis identifies significant publication growth, highlighting influential authors, journals, countries, and maps core thematic areas such as the role of social media in health information dissemination. These findings offer data-driven perspectives for developing more effective digital communication strategies in the context of public health.

Abstract

Identity is entirely a social construction and cannot exist outside cultural representation and acculturation because identity is within the social and cultural environment. In the context of tradition, identity is related to the position and social position of the community. Dreadlocked children are believed to have more daring personalities than humans who are destined to have normal hair. This phenomenon is not limited to dreadlocks who live in Dieng. Several cases were also found in individuals who had direct descendants of the Dieng population, even though they were domiciled outside the Dieng area. This research used Cultural Identity Theory and city branding. What is their social identity? How does the ritual transformation of dreadlocks contribute to the activation of Dieng's brand as a tourist destination? This study employed the constructivism paradigm and analysed systematically meaningful acts socially, especially on the dreadlocks in Dieng, Central Java. The methodological approach is qualitative. The informants are six parents, public figures, and officials. The result shown: For the people of Dieng Plateau, the number of dreadlocked children correlates with people's welfare. The greater the number of dreadlocked children, the better their welfare. The misunderstanding is that the dreadlocks are special, smart, hyperactive because the dreadlocks are guarded by supernatural beings. Related to tourist destinations, the local government uses it as part of a cultural tourism destination that is economical in purpose.
