Abstract

This systematic literature review addresses critical gaps in understanding AI's role in social media communication strategies, specifically examining its impact on influencer marketing, crisis communication, and human-centred trust-building methodologies. Informed by conceptual frameworks of information ethics, user trust, and algorithmic influence, the study distinguishes itself by focusing on recent advancements in fairness-aware machine learning, AI-driven fact-checking, and evolving regulatory landscapes. Analysing 30 peer-reviewed Scopus articles from 2020 to 2025, this study employs a systematic literature review methodology guided by the PRISMA guidelines to ensure rigorous selection and analysis of relevant studies. Findings reveal AI's transformative potential in personalisation and efficiency, yet expose critical ethical challenges like AI-driven deepfakes, algorithmic polarisation, and privacy concerns. It is recommended to develop AI transparency mechanisms, accountability frameworks for public service algorithms, and targeted training for content detection by citizens, as well as provide practical guidance for responsible AI integration in digital communications.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors contributing to students’ negative emotional experiences during communication with peers, faculty members, and staff in the culturally diverse setting of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya, Indonesia. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research examined the interplay of communication styles, interpersonal relationships, and socio-cultural differences of 126 respondents. Results indicate that a significant majority, 75.4% of students, reported experiencing negative emotions during campus communication, with female students reporting a higher prevalence within their gender group. Qualitative analysis identified three primary categories of contributing factors: ‘tone and style of communication,’ ‘interpersonal relationships,’ and ‘social and cultural differences’ along with their sub-categories, such as impolite or disrespectful language and feelings of being undervalued or unsupported, primarily stemming from communication styles and interpersonal relationships emerged as the most significant contributors to negative emotional experiences. The study highlights the critical role of communicative styles and interpersonal dynamics in eliciting negative emotions within a diverse university environment. These findings underscore the need for fostering inclusive and supportive communication practices to mitigate emotional strain and enhance student well-being and academic achievement.

Abstract

The global demand for halal products is continuing to rise in tandem with the growing trend of the halal lifestyle. Indonesia, with the world's largest Muslim population, aims to become a global halal hub, although it currently ranks fourth in the SGIE 2023 report. This study explored how Indonesia, through the BPJPH (Super body Government Agency for Halal Enforcement), utilised public communication and diplomacy to enhance its nation branding in the global halal industry. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, website analysis, social media content, and event documentation. Findings indicate that BPJPH promotes halal branding through the SEHATI campaign, bilateral cooperation, and strategic media approaches. These efforts demonstrate the role of public communication and diplomacy in enhancing Indonesia's credibility and visibility in the global halal industry. The study highlights the significance of soft power and multi-stakeholder engagement in supporting Indonesia's goal to lead the global halal economy.

Abstract

Although democracy promises civil liberties, the police often exert coercive power that generates public distrust. In Indonesia, this condition has sparked counter-discourses, one of which is expressed through the punk band Sukatani’s song ‘Bayar Bayar Bayar’. This study examines how lyrics construct a discourse of resistance and how the song operates as a symbolic action within social movements. Adopting a critical paradigm, this study applied a critical discourse analysis, integrating Althusser’s theory of repressive state apparatuses, Barthes’ semiotics, and Burke’s symbolic action. Textual analysis of the lyrics and audiovisual documentation of demonstrations were used to collect data. The findings indicate that the song deconstructs the police myth as protectors, reframing them as agents of systemic repression. Furthermore, its performative use during protests demonstrates how music operates as a collective symbolic act of defiance. This study contributes to scholarship by highlighting the role of cultural texts in shaping political resistance and critique.

Abstract

In Indonesia’s contemporary political landscape, mass media plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion through constructed narratives and representations. This study examined how two major online news outlets– CNN Indonesia and Detik.com, framed coverage of Gibran Rakabuming Raka as vice president of the Republic of Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative method and Entman’s (1993) framing theory, the research analyses articles published from January 2024 to June 2025. Data were collected from official websites and processed using NVivo 12 Plus to identify framing elements—problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. Findings reveal that Detik.com frames Gibran positively, highlighting personal branding, electability, and grassroots engagement, while CNN Indonesia focuses on dynastic politics, democratic ethics, and legal controversies. These framing differences reflect each outlet's editorial stance and affirm the media's role in constructing political realities that influence public perception.

Abstract

New media exists to meet human needs, especially the need for information and self-expression. However, users need to adapt to utilise it, and this adaptation process varies from person to person, including Generation Z. Generation Z is one of the generations that quickly adapts to the presence of new media compared to previous generations. The ease with which Generation Z uses new media such as Instagram also makes Generation Z use the new media. Some members of Generation Z even have several social media accounts at the same time. Based on this background, the purpose of this study is to find out how self-presentation by Generation Z occurs when using multiple Instagram accounts. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach as the research method. The data collection technique employed is Focus Group Discussion (FGD), where the participants are members of Generation Z. There were 10 high school students as participants. The sampling method used in this study was snowball sampling. The conclusion of this research shows that the use of Instagram multiple accounts by Generation Z is indicative of a sophisticated self-presentation technique. The main account provides a formal setting for creating an idealised persona and obtaining approval from others. With a smaller audience, secondary accounts provide a forum for more genuine, impromptu, and emotional self-expression. Other accounts, meanwhile, provide chances to experiment with different characters, interests, and identities. These self-presentations show how Generation Z balances the personal identity they want to preserve in the digital sphere with the social image they want to convey.

Abstract

The use of technology in the world of journalism continues to grow rapidly, one form of this innovation being immersive journalism. This study aims to map Indonesia's readiness to develop immersive journalism through the aspects of news reporting, user literacy, as well as ethics and regulations. It uses a qualitative method with a narrative literature review approach to examine the format of immersive journalism in a flexible and exploratory manner, in searching for literature with broad and complex topics. 33 scientific articles and 1 book were selected through a data source evaluation process using inclusion and exclusion criteria based on indexed journals, books, open access, and relevance to the research objectives. In addition, 9 government policy documents were used as grey literature and 3 websites as supporting sources. The findings reveal the advantages of Immersive Journalism in terms of interactivity, presence, emotional engagement, and empathy. Challenges include ethics, implementation, and audience acceptance. Various opportunities emerge from the combination of local potentials such as support from the National Long-Term Development Plan for 2025-2045 policy, production and enhancement of immersive technology education, growth in the virtual reality headset market, and selection of long-term topics. Challenges related to the need for specific ethical regulations for immersive journalism can refer to policies and laws in Indonesia

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has made online food delivery services an integral aspect of modern lifestyles, enhancing convenience through technology-based marketing initiatives. GoFood, a feature within the GoJek application, is an online food ordering service with significant influence on user activity and experience. This study aims to examine the effect of service quality on customer satisfaction, specifically for GoFood users in the city of Bandung. The quantitative research design employed incidental sampling to select 110 respondents who met the predetermined criteria. The questionnaire used was intended for students, lecturers, activists, or other occupations who are active as GoFood customers on the GO-JEK application. Data were analysed to evaluate the relationship between service quality variables, including reliability, empathy, and responsiveness, with customer satisfaction using multiple regression analysis techniques. The analysis results show that service quality variables such as reliability and empathy significantly affect consumer satisfaction, and one variable, responsiveness, negatively impacts customer satisfaction. With an adjusted R-square value of 55.1%, the independent variable in the model accounts for 55.1% of the dependent variable, with other factors outside the model accounting for the remaining portion. The finding suggests that overemphasising speed or responsiveness may not necessarily improve GoFood customer satisfaction and, in the context of this study, may even have a negative effect. These results can be interpreted as indicating that consumers may prioritise other service qualities, such as order accuracy or reliability, over response speed.

Abstract

In today’s interconnected digital era, roleplay on social media platforms such as Telegram serves as a space for adolescents to create and perform virtual identities. This study explored the verbal and non-verbal communication experiences, meanings, and motivations underlying virtual identity formation among adolescent role-players. Employing a phenomenological qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews (n = 5, June 2025), observation, and documentation. The findings reveal three interrelated themes: (1) verbal communication is primarily text-based due to anonymity constraints; (2) non-verbal communication is conveyed through textualised cues, such as ‘//’ symbols, emoticons, and stickers, which substitute for gestures and body language; and (3) virtual identity carries patterned meanings shaped by escapism, social experimentation, and self-exploration. Adolescents construct and perform identities that enable emotional expression, alternative self-exploration, and meaningful peer engagement. This study highlights how roleplay functions as a digital ‘third space’, where anonymity and textual communication facilitate identity development and socio-emotional literacies.

Abstract

This study examined the discourse of a new social movement of start-up workers through the modality of humour produced by the Instagram account @Ecommurz Indonesia. Using multimodal critical discourse analysis of a 150-content corpus in 2023, this analysis focuses on ideational, interpersonal, and textual symbols. This finding shows that humour on @ecommurz serves as a mobilisation engine for startup workers. Six prominent ideas were identified: labour exploitation, low income, divestment, investment, petitions, and layoffs. Visually, direct eye contact, parallel angles, and popular personas reduce audience distance, while the opening-interruption-closing narrative pattern, clean typography, contrast in meaning, and hashtags unify interpretation and accelerate dissemination. Intertextuality (brand parody, political nostalgia) strengthens critical power and sarcasm. This combination produces shareable humour with criticism, builds collective identity and shared memory, and triggers organic participation on social media. Thus, humour expands cross-professional coalitions and affirms its role as a repertoire of new social movements on social media, particularly in the discourse of Indonesian start-ups.
