Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out and analyze the types of conversational implicature and the maxim violation in Beauty and the Beast movie. Beauty and the Beast movie was directed by Bill Condon and released in 2017. The method used to conduct this research is descriptive qualitative method. To analyze the types of conversational implicature and the maxim of violation, the writers retrieved the theory from P.H.Grice. Grice states that there are two types of conversational implicature and there are four maxims in cooperative principles. The result of this research indicates that: (1) There are two types of conversational implicature occured in Beauty and the Beast movie; those are generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature.  The  most common  types  of  conversational  implicature that occur in Beauty and the Beast movie is generalized conversational implicature, (2) There are four maxim which violated in Beauty and the Beast movie; those are maxim of quality, quantity, relation and manner. The most violated maxim in Beauty and the Beast movie is maxim of quantity.

Abstract

This research investigated the effect of extensive reading on students reading comprehension. The writer used the quantitative as the researched method and the writer used the queasy experiment as the research design. For collecting the data the writer gave the test for experimental and control group. For experimental group the writer used the extensive reading method as the reading class room and the other method for the control group. After the post- test gave to both classes, the writer analyzed it by using SPPS 20 program to found out the improvement on student reading comprehension after extensive reading implied on reading classroom. Based on the finding and discussion. It can be concluded that hypothesis was accepted. It meant that there was effect on extensive reading on student reading comprehension. Based on the resulted of this research. The writer suggested the teacher to used extensive reading on reading process to improved student reading comprehension.

Abstract

The management changing is started by an election of a new chairman. Supporting academic of the students, English lecturer assigns a project of poster creation of election using English. this research is to find what extent the poster is delivered to its audience. This study is qualitative research with an analytical descriptive as the method. The data are 5 English posters of Students’ election candidates. All of the posters are analyzed based on 5 criteria of Schwab’s good writing poster theory. Content analysis is used to validate the data findings. The study reveals all the 5 posters don’t meet the criteria. However, all of them gives similarity in showing advantage criterion. Next research should assess into a single poster to give a brief explanation of making a good poster.

Abstract

Poetry/poem as one of a literary works is definitely an interesting subject to be analyzed. In a poem there are some elements that are valuable as an analysis source. One of them is Imagery. Imagery is used in a poem to help the readers in understanding and comprehending the whole poem because through imagery the readers can imagine every word, they are reading in the poem so they can see, feel, touch, hear, taste and smell the thing that is described by the speaker/poet. Literary work also can be analyzed by its extrinsic elements which is literary criticism or multi disciplines. One of phenomenal literary criticism is psychoanalytic perspective. Through psychoanalytic perspective the work of literature reveals the psychoanalytic aspect of the depth true feeling of the author. The purpose of this analysis is to know what kinds of imagery contained in Dover Beach poem written by Matthew Arnold. The method of this analysis is using descriptive and qualitative methods by reading and underlining the line and stanza contains imagery and every line and stanza reveals the psychoanalytic aspect. The result of this analysis is the writer finds out there are some imagery contained in Dover Beach poem. Dover Beach poem contains Visual Imagery, Olfactory Imagery, Auditory Imagery, Kinesthetic Imagery, and Organic Imagery. In Dover Beach poem are found some of psychoanalytic aspects such as unconscious and the id, ego, and superego in Dover Beach poem

Abstract

Abstract -- This study focuses on compound word and its need to be mastered by teachers and English learners. There are new words coming up almost every day. Most of them are by combining of two different words, blending and many other morphological phenomena. It is commonly known as word-formation. The discussion covers on word-formation specifically on the types of compound word and its meaning.   A new word is formed from the same or different word classes. This word formation must be mastered by the English teachers and also the learners of English. The Semantic theory is used just to study the meaning of the word not the sentence. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data were  taken from The Time of the Oath Album By Helloween. The results show that there are three types compound words found. Compound Noun is the most dominant followed by Adjective and Verb. Abstract

The objectives of this research are to improve the students’ motivation through mobile phones as learning (m-learning) media in teaching vocabulary to improve students’ interest to start to give attention with their teacher in English vocabulary learning. The respondents of this research are students of the Information System study program. This Action Reseach is consists of two (2) cycles with five (5) actions in each cycle. In collecting the data, this research used multiple-choice as a test for English vocabulary mastery, observation to obtain data on students’ activities,  field note to record about the general classroom situations, and questionnaires to obtain information from the students in the sense of a report about their English vocabulary learning through mobile learning media. Based on the data analysis of pre-test, post-test 1 in the first cycle, post-test 2 in the second cycle, the mean score is 61.37, 66.06, and 73.42. Then, the data analysis of the observation list in pre-cycle to the first cycle and the second cycle is 42.18%, 49.47%, and 70.97%. It supports the questionnaire data that more than 70% of the students agreed that mobile learning media could motivate them and increasing their English vocabulary mastery. The result of this research showed that Mobile Phone as Learning Media is effective in improving students’ motivation in English vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Abstrak  - The purposes of this study is to describe what and how memes in social media Instagram as the representation of critics from netizen. The approach of this study is Critical Discourse Analysis by Fairclough with three dimensions; text, discursive practice, and social practice. The writer chooses meme in @fakartun Instagram account as the data source because meme full of funny picture and simple text, easy to understand, and lead the reader to think twice to find the implied meaning in it. This research is focused on meme in @fakartun Instagram account, especially pictures, text, and caption. The conclusion of this study is the writer found social media as a space for netizen to get  and upload many information widely and effectively. Nowadays memes are no longer just pictures and funny words that are entertaining but become a media to express opinions, criticize a policy or an event that is happening. Abstract

Translation techniques are expected to be solutions to cope with translation problems faced by translators. Due to this reason, translation learners are taught these techniques to be their provision in handling translation problems they will face as professional translators. This research is aimed at giving comprehension of the using translation techniques tendency in informal letter translation. Case study method is used in this research to analyze how English Letters students who have learnt translation through qualitative approach and document data collecting technique. This research uses Molina & Albir's (2002)Translation Techniques to identify the translation technniques used by the students.The result shows that the dominance of literal translation technique by a very significant data finding from the eleven techniques used with normal distribution ranging from 17 until 27 data per students.In the next research, it is hoped that there will be wider scope of study to analyze the trends of translation techniques in those students’ affiliation.Keywords: Literal Translation, Teknik Penerjemahan, Informal Letter

Abstract

Abstract: Writing is one of skills in language teaching. There are some kinds of writing genres, one of them is Recount Text. Writing a recount text is helping in memorising about an events or experiences in a kind of sequences story by follow the generic structure of recount text, orientations, events, and reorientation. To make the content and purpose of writing recount texts is effectively fulfilled, the students are provided some guidelines and procedures. However, the way teacher provides the guidelines and procedures does not always get the success in teaching and learning writing. The writer used descriptive qualitative method because  the  data  analysis  is presented  descriptively. This study aims to apply Brainstorming techniques in teaching Recount Text English in 8th grade students at MTs.Al-Husna Depok. The teaching process through; interviews, observation, literature study, and the internet. Moreover,  in order to collect the result of the significant differences before and after of using Brainstorming Technique, the writer uses pre-test and post-test during the observation. The research findings include: 1)The students arranged the sentences into a good paragraph by answering the question who, what, when, where, why, and how. At last, for the second trying of using brainstorming, the students did the practice individually. 2)The advantages of teaching recount text through brainstorming are that the writer found that brainstroming could help the students feel at ease while they are writing. The students can manage their time for writing more efficiently. They could produce unpredictable words for their writing since brainstorming helps them generate ideas more effectively and release their anxiety that cause the writer’s block. 3) Using brainstorming technique is very effective in improving the students’ ability in writing recount text for the 8th grade students at MTs. Al-Husna Depok. By using brainstorming, the writer made the students enjoy writing. It because brainstorming is not a difficult technique to be applied. Keyword: Teaching, Speaking, Information Gap Technique

Abstract

Abstract - The purpose of this study is to explore how to explore communication and literary perspectives on the study of Jenggo short story by Putu Wijaya's stigma communication. The focus of the stigma communication studied is how the community's stigma about a transvestite is considered weak. Pansy stigma arises in communication that focuses on messages. This research method is content analysis with a qualitative approach with a critical constructivist paradigm. This study analyzes stigma communication with the theory put forward by Smith (2007) with the perspective of sociology and communication by Durkheim (1947) and Goffman (1963). The results of this study lead to stigma communication that occurs in Jenggo short story including signs, labeling groups, responsibilities, hazards, to the impact of messages and the process of sharing messages. This research also proves the meaning of messages in stigma communication. In an effort to ward off stigma, literature has a big role because it is able to provide other perspectives that encourage stigma communication that is more transparent and responsible for the harmony and lasting climate of peace in society. Building positive communication within the community is expected to have an impact on the construction of stigma communication that leads to a healthy and plural society.Keywords: Stigma, Communication, Stigma Communication, Jenggo, Putu WijayaAbstrak  - Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana menangkal stigma dengan perspektif komunikasi dan sastra pada kajian komunikasi stigma cerpen Jenggo karya Putu Wijaya. Fokus stigma yang dikaji adalah bagaimana stigma masyarakat tentang orang banci yang dinilai lemah. Stigma banci muncul dalam komunikasi yang berfokus pada pesan. Metode penelitian ini adalah analisis isi dengan pendekatan kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktivis kritis. Penelitian ini menganalisis komunikasi stigma dengan teori yang dikemukakan Smith (2007) dengan perspektif sosiologi dan komunikasi Durkheim (1947) dan Goffman (1963). Hasil penelitian ini mengarah kalau komunikasi stigma yang terjadi pada cerpen Jenggo meliputi tanda, pelabelan kelompok, tanggung jawab, bahaya, hingga dampak pesan dan proses berbagi pesan. Penelitian ini juga membuktikan tentang arti pesan dalam komunikasi stigma. Dalam upaya menangkal stigma, sastra memiliki peran besar karena mampu memberikan perspektif lain yang mendorong komunikasi stigma lebih transparan dan bertanggung jawab demi keharmonisan dan kelanggengan iklim perdamaian di masyarakat. Membangun komunikasi yang positif di dalam komunitas diharapkan bisa memberikan dampak konstruksi komunikasi stigma yang mengarahkan ke masyarakat yang sehat dan plural.Kata kunci: Stigma, Komunikasi, Komunikasi Stigma, Jenggo, Putu Wijaya
