Abstract

Islamic Higher Education often serves as a pivotal educational centre, cultivating knowledge and fostering academic growth. Understanding the factors influencing students' academic performance, particularly in specialized fields like Tadris Biology, holds significance in optimising educational strategies and support systems. This study aims to ascertain the variables that impact the Cumulative Achievement Index of Tadris Biology students at Islamic universities. The research methodology employed is qualitative, using Grounded Theory analysis techniques. Data was collected by administering a questionnaire and conducting in-depth interviews with 67 students. The findings indicate that prior educational experience, gender, and parental income affect GPA. Students with a scientific background, female students, and those from higher-income households tend to achieve higher GPAs. Conversely, social media usage can hurt academic performance, while involvement in extracurricular activities has no discernible effect. The benefit of this research is that it explores factors affecting the academic success of tardis biology students in Islamic higher education. This research holds inherent value in unravelling the nuanced aspects that shape the academic success of Tadris Biology students within the realm of Islamic higher education. Understanding these dynamics can pave the way for tailored interventions and support systems to enhance student outcomes in this specialised field.

Abstract

Knowledge about how to present material so that it is easier to understand is called PCK (Pedagogical Content knowledge). PCK needs to be owned by teaching staff or prospective teaching staff to determine the approach or method used in delivering learning material so that it is more effective and meaningful. Apart from that, PCK is also one of the standards in preparing teaching staff. The aim of this research is to evaluate PCK in the readiness of biology education students to become prospective teaching staff. This research uses descriptive methods and is quantitative research. The research subjects were nine biology education students. Samples were taken using purposive sampling. PCK data is collected using a questionnaire while data on teaching ability is taken through assessment sheets. Data were analyzed descriptively with percentages and categorized based on score interpretation criteria. The results of this research show that PCK is included in the good category with a percentage of 77.72% and basic teaching abilities are also included in the good category with a percentage of 78.92%. Teachers who have good PCK are able to prepare learning optimally. Teaching ability is also the key to the success of the teaching and learning process, because students gain a lot of experience during the learning process. The conclusion from the results of this research is that the overall PCK of biology education students is included in the good category, which proves that they have the preparation to become educators.

Abstract

Indonesia is an agricultural country that still imports large amounts of rice. The increasing number of rice imports in Indonesia in recent years may indicate that food security in Indonesia is still low. This problem can be raised in learning that is integrated with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The aim of ESD is to equip students with the skills necessary to reflect on their behavior and consider the social, cultural, economic, and environmental impacts of their activities, from both a local and global perspective. ESD learning can also be supported by indigenous phenomena such as Rasi. Rasi is one of Cireundeu's traditional cultures, which has a sustainable food management system. Food security issues integrated with Rasi can be used as an effort to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target point two, namely ending hunger to achieve food security, improving nutrition, and encouraging sustainable agriculture. This ESD-integrated learning can be applied to biology learning in the independent curriculum phase F, especially in the digestive system chapter, sub-chapter food content.

Abstract

Higher education in Indonesia is faced with various challenges in the era of globalization, which demands adaptation and innovation to produce graduates who are ready to compete at the global level. In response to this challenge, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology introduced the Independent Student Exchange Program (PMM) within the Independent Campus initiative. This program allows students to study outside their home university for one semester, providing the opportunity to broaden their horizons, skills, and experiences. This research aims to explore Biology Education students' perceptions of the benefits and challenges they experience when taking cross-major courses at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang in the PMM program. The research method used was a qualitative descriptive approach with an open questionnaire instrument distributed to five PMM student participants. Research results show that students gain a variety of benefits from this program, including new perspectives, improved practical skills, diverse academic experiences, and expanded knowledge across disciplines. However, students also face various challenges, such as academic difficulties in understanding new material, differences in teaching methods, social and cultural adaptation, as well as technical and logistical obstacles. In conclusion, although PMM provides valuable learning experiences and enriches students' abilities, there is a need for better support to help them overcome the challenges they face. The results of this research can be a reference for improving the implementation of the PMM program in the future, so that it is more effective in supporting students' academic and personal development.
