Abstract

The Mamuju River Estuary is an estuary whose role is to protect coastal ecosystems (mangroves, seagrasses, coral reefs) from the negative effects of intensification of land clearing upstream and coastal. Land clearing for various human needs encourages erosion resulting in high TSS (Total Suspended Solid) concentrations in river water bodies. This study aimed to determine the assimilation capacity of the Mamuju River estuary on TSS pollutants. The results showed that TSS concentrations still met the quality standard for marine biota (mangroves: <80 mg / l) with a lower distribution pattern when getting further away from the river mouth. The flushing time at the study site is 5.6 days so the river and seawater exchange is ± 65 times per year. The pollutant load was 586.11 tons/month. The value of the assimilation capacity reaches 255.57 tons/month. Based on these results it can be concluded that the Mamuju River estuary has experienced an overload of sediment.

Abstract

A problem that often occurred for the actor of catfish cultivation was an indication of smelly mud/dirt/muddy taste (off-flavors). Off-flavors were identified from chemical geosmin compound (GSM) and 2-Methyl Iso-borneol (MIB) produced by Cyanophyceae (Blue Green Algae or BGA) and actinomycetes. This soil odor compounds was soluble in water, into the body of fish through the gill and forwarded to the fatty tissue of fish, so that the fish meat was finally mud-smelly/dirt/musty. Probiotics was an attempt to reduce the compounds that caused off-flavors. The use of probiotics containing Bacillus spp. on feed could degrade organic matter through bioremediation digestive organs and environmental fish farming to minimize the accumulation of organic matter. The reduced of organic matter in waters on total organic odor, has impacted on the percentage of BGA as cause of mud-smelly in waters, especially for species Oscillatoria Sp. In this study, the researchers used Bacillus spp. to treat 10 ml/kg and 20 ml/kg of feed that can indirectly lower the percentage of BGA, Oscillatoria population Sp. and off-flavor in catfish meat as compared to controls.

Abstract

The high activity of catching Shark Ray (Rhinidae) have a big impact on the population and affect the balance of the marine ecosystem. This is supported by the characteristics of stingrays that have a lower reproductive ability, slower growth and higher risk of death. Lack of database information, relating to the Shark Ray can reduce oversight or regulations governing the production of the total catch. So the condition is feared impact on the survival of Shark Ray, especially in Bangka Belitung. One of the important databases that must be done is the accurate identification of fish species Shark Ray as a reference in determining the conservation status. The purpose of this research is to identify the molecular basis Shark Ray and the conservation status of the Shark Ray landed on Bangka Island. Shark Ray samples obtained from a source of potential landing in Bangka Island, namely PPN Sungailiat (Bangka Regency), TPI Ketapang (Pangkalpinang City) and TPI Kurau (Central Bangka Regency). The research method consists of three stages: collection of samples, the molecular identification (mtDNA Cytochrome Oxidase Subunit 1 / COI gene), phylogenetic analysis and conservation status of Shark Ray. The results of the COI gene nucleotide character matching were performed by using the BLAST program integrated into GenBank pages and showed that the three samples of Shark Rays were identified as Rhina Ancylostoma species (Bowmouth guitarfish, Shark Ray) with a rate of similarity of 100%. Based on data from the IUCN Red List, the species Rhina Ancylostomain the category of Critically Endangered (CR) and based on the status of trade, at the 18th CoP meeting in Geneva, on August 2019, CITES has added Wedgefishes (Family Rhinidae) in Appendix II.

Abstract

Small-scale capture fisheries have a very important place globally, but unfortunately are still mostly unregulated. Typically, they are defined based on capture fisheries characteristics, technical attributes of fishing vessels, and socio-economic attributes of fishers. Indonesia uses the term ‘small-scale fisher’ (nelayan kecil), currently defined to include fishing boats of ≤ 10 gross tons (GT), which previously covered only boats of ≤ 5 GT. Because small-scale fishers are by law granted a privilege by government to be exempted from fisheries management measures (e.g. fisheries licensing system), its current definition jeopardizes fisheries sustainability and significantly increases the size of unregulated and unreported fisheries. It is also unfair, as it legitimizes the payment of government support to relatively well-off fishers. This paper aims to develop a functional definition of small-scale fisheries (perikanan skala kecil) to guide policy implementation to improve capture fisheries management in Indonesia. A definition of small-scale fisheries is proposed as a fisheries operation, managed at the household level, fishing with or without a fishing boat of < 5 GT, and using fishing gear that is operated by manpower alone. This definition combines attributes of the fishing vessel (GT), the fishing gear (mechanization), and the unit of business decision making (household) to minimize unregulated and unreported fishing and focus government aid on people who are truly poor and vulnerable to social and economic shocks. The terms small-scale fisheries and small-scale fishers must be legally differentiated as the former relates to fisheries management and the latter relates to empowerment of marginalized fishers.
