Abstract

Until the end of the 19th century, Russian literature was still thronged by aristocratic writers such as Tolstoy, Turgenev, and Dostoevsky. in 1880, as Tsar broaden the trade, middle classes then emerged along with new names of writers from the non-aristocratic class. Maxim Gorky is one of the writers that got recognized at that time, a writer who was born from a family of the laborer. This research aims to analyze Gorky’s initial capital and his strategy to utilize, process, and develop his capitals to be contested in the literature and social field by using Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of The Field of Cultural Production. The result of this research attests that Gorky utilizes cultural and social capital to plunge into the literature field. Gorky has possessed additional capital in the form of a specific legitimation from Chekov and Tolstoy. Gorky’s use of the capital reconvention strategy by donating money for the revolutionary movement has earned him a central role in the Russian Revolution with Lenin. other than that, social capital in the form of a close relationship with Lenin and the intellectual group was used by Gorky to face the dominant structure that has been trying to maintain the status quo and dampen the growth of Gorky’s legitimation. Gorky has also done a reproduction strategy by consistently writing revolutionary group fights and worker class-themed works. Gorky’s negotiation with Stalin in the Soviet union’s writers union is Gorky’s successive strategy to succeed the socialism realism sect he developed.

How is the form of patriarchal reconstruction in in the novel according to Karen Horney’s theory of psycho feminism? Those research problems aim to find out the correlation between patriarchal forms of culture experienced by women and the patriarchal forms that appear in the novel. This study uses Qualitative Descriptive analysis method. It is a method in which researchers attempt to describe what they have read according to the primary and secondary data sources. The researchers use Karen Horney’s theory of psycho feminism which stated that women’s resistance is generated from their parenting style and social environment.  Women’s resistance is psychoanalytically divided into three forms: moving towards people, against people, and moving away from people. Those movements cause women to have several self-defense mechanisms: displacement, sublimation, identification, and repression.

Abstract

Mara’s travails in Ghana and subsequently Germany, have provided the fertile grounds for critics to draw various labels for the protagonist in Beyond the horizon. To some readers, Mara is a victim who has been exploited through patriarchy; to others, Mara learns from her environment and finally asserts her independence; and to a third group of critics, Mara is complicit in the fate that befalls her. Thus Mara remains an enigma, earning our sympathy or losing it; winning our admiration or courting our disgust depending on which angle we look at her. This paper does an objective analysis of Mara by resorting to the theory of deconstruction which helps us unearth more than what meets the eye in the novel. This approach helps us provide answers to issues such as how Mara is presented in the narrative, the motivations that guide her actions and inactions and how Mara, as an individual, and the society at large contribute in creating the protagonist we part ways with at the end of the narrative. The conclusion arrived at is that there are myriads of relationships among the characters in the narrative that provide hierarchies of meaning which can be deconstructed to produce more subtle and valid ones. Mara is not simply a victim; she is complicit, to some extent, and she takes steps to obliterate those she considers the vermin of the earth. In short, she uses dirt (prostitution) to clean dirt (patriarchy, male chauvinism, discrimination, poverty, racism).KEY WORDS: deconstruction, dirt, Ghana, marriage, patriarchy, prostitution.
