Jo is the most user of metaphor because she frequently used a non-literal sentences. Jo mostly used euphemism to protect the listener’s feeling as she is an empathetic person. Amy, as the spoilest one, she is the most underestimate user. She used it to avoid some existing fact, which is to protect herself from feeling embarrassed. Beth used metaphor and hyperbole, but for the function, she used it all as a protective euphemism to protect the listener’s feeling because all of her euphemism words are related to dead, she died in the film caused by scarlet fever. Meg is the least euphemism user. She only use hyperbole twice and circumlocution once but all of them used as a protection to her self-esteem because she is easy to be provoked. Abstract

This study formulated the following problems: (1). How is the depiction of patriarchy in “Perempuan Keumala” novel by Endang Moerdopo? (2). How is the form of patriarchal reconstruction in in the novel according to Karen Horney’s theory of psycho feminism? Those research problems aim to find out the correlation between patriarchal forms of culture experienced by women and the patriarchal forms that appear in the novel. This study uses Qualitative Descriptive analysis method. It is a method in which researchers attempt to describe what they have read according to the primary and secondary data sources. The researchers use Karen Horney’s theory of psycho feminism which stated that women’s resistance is generated from their parenting style and social environment.  Women’s resistance is psychoanalytically divided into three forms: moving towards people, against people, and moving away from people. Those movements cause women to have several self-defense mechanisms: displacement, sublimation, identification, and repression.

Abstract

Social conflict can be defined as a battle over values, and claims to limited status, power, and resources in which the opponent's goal is to neutralize, harm, or eliminate their rival. Social conflict also refers to disagreements and tensions that arise between different groups of people in society. This study aimed to explore two categories of social conflict presented in Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street: realistic and nonrealistic conflict. The researcher analyzed the novel using a sociological approach, focusing on social conflict by Lewis Coser as a central theme. Elements such as realistic and nonrealistic conflict are examined in the context of the social struggles faced by the novel's characters. The researcher argues that social conflict has the potential to influence and transform human behavior and attitudes within society. Utilizing qualitative methods, the study investigates the experiences and social realities of the characters. Data were collected from words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs related to social conflicts throughout the narrative. The analysis reveals that indirect characterization through dialogue and character behavior is a key feature of the novel, with no direct characterization being evident. The study identifies various social conflicts, particularly between Esperanza, an immigrant, and other characters. The findings indicate that realistic conflicts emerge when Esperanza faces disappointment and sexual harassment from her peers. Additionally, nonrealistic conflicts are portrayed through tension in some situations, such as distrust and jokes from her friends that trigger conflicts.
