Abstract

Code-switching, the alternation between two or more languages within a discourse, is a prevalent linguistic phenomenon in multilingual societies. In South Africa, where English often coexists with indigenous languages such as isiXhosa, music has become a key medium for linguistic and cultural expression. This qualitative research paper examines the role of code-switching in Xhosa music, specifically analysing Amanda Black’s song Kutheni Na featuring Kwesta, to determine whether such linguistic alternations contribute to language preservation or language shift. Using discourse analysis, this study looks at how isiXhosa, English, and isiZulu are used together in the song's lyrics, looking at the language patterns and the sociocultural reasons for these choices. The analysis is framed by Myers-Scotton’s Markedness Model, Fishman’s Domain Theory, and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to assess the implications of code-switching for Xhosa preservation or shift. Findings indicate that code-switching in Kutheni Na serves expressive and functional purposes. While this interplay of language fusion in the song helps sustain isiXhosa in contemporary music, the growing use of English in South African music is worrying. It might lead to people gradually preferring English in mainstream discourse, which could cause shifts in language use over time.

Abstract

Throughout 2021-2024, cases of sexual violence against women have increased. The impact of violence on victims tends to be traumatic. Trauma can hinder selfdevelopment, so it needs to be overcome either by the individual's own efforts or professional assistance to have the ability to recover (resilience). Efforts to prevent sexual violence and handle post-violence victims can use literary education alternatives. Literary works can affect the inner psychology of humans. This will encourage humans as connoisseurs of literary works to be motivated to imitate something contained in them. The novel The Crying Woman To Bulan Hitam is one of the literary works that tells the true story of a woman victim of sexual violence who can find resilience. The study of this novel uses the hermeneutic method to analyze the data. This research is expected to provide a discourse on the resilience of victims of sexual violence. The results obtained from this study are that the novel Perempuan who Cried on the Black Moon neatly describes the process towards resilience, which is represented by the character Magi Diela, which includes two factors, namely I have and I am.

Abstract

This study investigated teachers’ practice and perceptions of translanguaging in junior high school classrooms in Ghana, focusing on how teachers negotiate language use. In this study, the awareness, understanding, and application of translanguaging by teachers were explored through qualitative interviews. The results show that although most participants were unfamiliar with the term ‘‘translanguaging,’’ the practice is a common strategy to enhance students’ comprehension and participation in classrooms. Teachers use translanguaging as a pedagogical approach to fill in linguistic gaps and to support plurilingual students. In contrast to the language policy that makes English the sole medium of instruction at the junior high school level, Ghanaian teachers in some public junior high schools continue practicing translanguaging, mostly through tacit approval of their circuit supervisors and school heads. The findings underline the need for rethinking language policies to reflect the realities of bilingual classrooms and recommend that intentionally incorporating translanguaging into formal educational frameworks at the junior high level could foster more inclusive and effective teaching and learning in the classrooms. This research contributes to extant literature advocating for the recognition and legitimisation of translanguaging in multilingual educational contexts, emphasising its role in improving teaching and learning outcomes in Ghanaian classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines the toponymy of Tukung Island and Babi Island in Balikpapan waters, East Kalimantan, through a linguistic anthropology approach. The research objective is to reveal the relationship between language, culture, and environment reflected in naming the two islands. The method used is descriptive qualitative analysis with an ethnographic approach. Data were obtained through a literature study of folklore manuscripts and secondary sources. The results show that Tukung Island comes from the word “tokong” in Malay, which means rowing pole. It is related to the legend of Panglima Sendong or refers to a small coral island according to its physical characteristics. The name Pulau Babi is associated with the presence of wild pig habitat, the shape of the island resembling a pig, or the legend of transforming humans into pigs. The analysis reveals that naming the two islands reflects the local wisdom of Balikpapan coastal communities in observing the environment and perpetuating collective experiences through language. The study also found a shift in the meaning and perception of the people towards the two island names, along with socio-cultural changes.

Abstract

This study, “Resisting the Other: Women’s Existentialism Against Patriarchal Culture in Selected Disney Princess Soundtrack Lyrics”, examines existentialist feminist themes in three Disney Princess songs: “Reflection” (Mulan), “Speechless” (Aladdin), and “Touch the Sky” (Brave). Using Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of “the Other” in Feminist Existentialism, the research analyzes how the lyrics reflect women’s struggles against patriarchal culture by asserting identity, autonomy, and freedom. The findings reveal distinct forms of resistance in each song. “Reflection” portrays women’s rejection of objectification and their demand for self-definition against restrictive gender roles. “Speechless” emphasizes an outright refusal of patriarchal silencing, expressing determination to voice resistance and claim agency. “Touch the Sky” highlights the pursuit of individual liberty, underscoring women’s ability to transcend imposed roles and choose their own paths. Collectively, these songs construct narratives of empowerment that resist the relegation of women to “the Other.” They affirm existential freedom and authenticity as essential to women’s self-realization, illustrating how popular culture can serve as a medium of resistance. By foregrounding women’s voices, Disney Princess soundtracks not only reflect evolving portrayals of women but also contribute to wider discourses on gender equality and female agency in contemporary society.
