Abstract

Diabetes mellitus causes lipid profile abnormalities, resulting in dyslipidemia in diabetic patients leading to ischemic stroke. This research aims to contrast lipid profiles in ischemic stroke patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and non-type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-T2DM) to prevent stroke recurrence, treat dyslipidemia in diabetes mellitus, and evaluate for treatment of T2DM and non-T2DM ischemic stroke patients. A cross-sectional design was conducted at RSUD Ciamis using secondary medical record data in 2020. The data was collected using a nonprobability sampling approach, with the sampling extent determined by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Univariate analysis was used to determine the quantity and calculation. Besides, an independent t-test and chi-square test was utilized to test two hypotheses in bivariate analysis. Multifaceted analysis in age, gender, hypertension, and coronary heart disease was incorporated to observe its influence on T2DM and non-T2DM ischemic stroke patients. By using four lipid profile indicators, the differences were only in the triglyceride. While the total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were insignificant. Meanwhile, hypertension and coronary heart disease (CHD) significantly affect the incidence of ischemic stroke.

Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that can lead to serious consequences that impair one's quality of life, if not adequately controlled. One of the undesirable complications is diabetic foot ulcer. It is estimated globally that every 30 seconds a leg is amputated due to diabetic foot, and thus can lower the quality of life. Recent studies have used a low-cost dye known as methylene blue as an anti-microorganism agent, and this sparks the idea of exploring more of its possible benefits. This literature review aimed to outline the beneficial roles of methylene blue in diabetic foot ulcer treatment. According to the findings, it is said that methylene blue may play a role as an anti-microorganism agent through its contribution in wound healing and invasive surgical prevention such as limb amputation. All the pooled articles showed a promising outcome of MB from the reduction of wound size in a shorter healing period with none adverse effects reported. Hence, methylene blue may have a promising role to be an effective agent in treating diabetic foot ulcer.

Abstract

Cervical cancer is the one of leading cause of death for women worldwide. It occurs due to infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV) which attacks the cervix in the female reproductive organs. The detecting cervical cancer method is by using pap smears and liquid based cytology (LBC) and vaccinations. However, both methods are limited in detecting cervical cancer quickly and accurately. This study aims to find potential biomarkers that will be used to quickly detect the development of cervical cancer. Large-scale studies have shown that microRNA-205 (miRNA) regulation has a very important role in various types of cancer including cervical cancer. The extraction and synthesis of cDNA from 26 preparations of cervical cancer paraffin blocks were measured by quantitative real time PCR to evaluate the expression of miRNA-205 as a biomarker of cervical cancer in cervical cancer samples. Statistical results showed that there was a significant difference in the expression of miRNA-205 which was relatively higher in cervical cancer patients (p<0.05) miRNA-205. In addition, the increased expression of miRNA-205 is associated with an increase in the severity of cervical cancer. We conclude that miRNA-205 is a potential candidate for cervical cancer molecular biomarker.

Abstract

Blunt thoracic trauma is one of the main contributors to trauma-related deaths, with the broad possibility of pathological chest injury. Imaging plays an important role in detecting most of internal organ injuries. Here we presented a 56-years-old male with progressive chest pain following blunt chest trauma several days prior without any early intervention. Chest radiograph showed rib fractures, pneumothorax, atelectasis, and raised left hemidiaphragm. Further CT scan evaluation identified additional hemothorax, subcutaneous emphysema and confirming the fourth to tenth rib fractures, pneumothorax, and unilateral hemidiaphragm elevation. As seen in our case, chest radiograph is crucial in initial evaluation of chest injury, usually through identification of pathological landmark. While chest radiograph is limited to one projection, CT scan provide a global evaluation of a region with a high sensitivity and specificity in detecting and confirming most of the injuries. Thus, one must not overlook any lightly appeared blunt thoracic trauma while optimizing the use of radiography and CT scan for the evaluation of injuries.

Abstract

Small Mother Against Decapentaplegic 3 (SMAD3), an intracellular transducer protein in the TGF-β signaling pathway, has a role in maintaining joint cartilage. Many studies have been conducted to examine the effect of polymorphism in SMAD3 gene with the incidence of osteoarthritis (OA). The objective of this study is to identify the association of SMAD3 gene rs12901499 variation with the incidence of knee OA in Indonesian women. We conducted an analytic cross-sectional design involving 24 knee OA patients and 50 non-OA subjects. The DNA was taken from saliva and genotyped using a kit from Integrated DNA Technologies with the Real Time PCR method. In this study, we found that the GA genotype (heterozygous mutant) of the rs12901499 allele was the allele that most frequently (50%) appeared in knee OA patients as well as non-OA subjects (50%). The G allele frequency was higher than the A allele among all participants. The Chi-Square analysis showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between allele variations in the SMAD3 rs12901499 gene and knee OA (p=1). In conclusion, there was no statistically significant relationship between the rs12901499 genetic variation in the SMAD3 gene and the incidence of knee osteoarthritis in Indonesian aged women.
