Abstract

Art is a form of expression of the soul that cannot be separated from human beings. Art makes human’s life more beautiful and colorful. Various kinds of art forms were created by humans as a form of existence and self-expression, be it in the form of dance, painting, and various other types of art. Bali as one of the world's international tourist destinations cannot be separated from the various kinds of arts in it. One of them is karawitan or art of sound. Karawitan art itself is divided into two types, namely instrumental musical art in the form of gamelan, and vocal karawitan. The art of karawitan, especially gamelan in Bali, is not only a complement to religious ceremonies or the pouring of creative ideas, but also has a very significant influence on the Balinese people and the listeners of the gamelan. The shape of the gamelan is also able to influence the soul and human behavior that dissolves in the atmosphere brought by the gamelan players. The implementation of gamelan art, either directly or indirectly, has ethical and aesthetic values. Through gamelan art, humans will learn ethical and aesthetic values. If viewed from the aesthetic value, gamelan art contains the values of truth (Satyam), purity (Shivam), and beauty (Sundaram) which are concepts of Hindu aesthetics itself. In terms of ethical values, gamelan art teaches one to learn to respect one another and learn the meaning of equality where everyone has the same position according to their respective duties and functions. Through gamelan, humans learn to harmonize what is said and what is done.

Abstract

The social life of the Hindu community in Bali cannot be separated from the ins and outs of work which then reflects the profession of the people who claim it. Professions in the social life of society will give birth to something called the professional group. This professional group will then have a social impact in the form of life strata in society. There is a separation between one profession and another, which then gives birth to a concept of ideas called the Catur Varṇa. In recent years there has been a widespread dualism of perspectives on the meaning of this Catur Varṇa concept. Some of them stated that this concept was a tradition passed down from generation to generation and there were also those who stated that this concept was an idea to organize the social life of Balinese people. The Catur Varṇa concept itself can be understood through literature which gives birth to a reality and facts. The concept of Catur Varṇa has been degraded due to the cognitive bias of the Balinese Hindu community in Bali in embodying the meaning of this concept. So that this concept does not give birth to social life that is more organized but instead creates a social problem that causes inequality in the body of community life. This inequality must be corrected immediately so that it does not become a tradition that has increasingly worsened the atmosphere of social life in Bali. Because today the concept of Catur Varṇa is consciously shifting meaning into a new concept that we have previously called the term Catur Wangsa.

Abstract

E. Washburn Hopkins interpreted, in 1902, the values for  from the data referred to in some verses contained in the Bhīṣma Parva of the Mahābhārata where  is a non-terminating and non-recurring fixed ratio of the circumference, , of a circle to its diameter, . The values interpreted for it by him from the data referred to for the dimensions, including , , and vipulatva , of the Rāhu, the Moon, and the Sun are 3.5, 3.5+, and 3.58 respectively. R. C. Gupta found, in 1990, these values to be the yielding of the gross misinterpretations. He pointed out that the value implied in the data of each of the three cases is only 3. The present paper is mainly aimed at probing when and why 3 was used in the Mahābhārata as the value for . The date when those above verses were incorporated in the Mahābhārata is the one when 3 as the value for  was used in the same if consistency is preferred to as a sound criterion in determining so. It tends to 500 BCE in its range extending from 500 BCE to 500 CE. It may go even beyond 500 BCE. 3 as the value for  seems to have been borrowed from some older forms of the Purāṇas into the Mahābhārata. If simplicity, prevalence, and traditionalism are preferred to as a sound criterion to calculate for a given , no other option for  is better than 3. The support for this option was available not only in the interior of India right from the Ṛgveda but also in the exterior of India at least right from the old Babylonian text.

Abstract

The truth in daily life is certainly a wholeness in implementing the tattwa, ethics and acara of Hinduism as tri basic framework of Hinduism in Bali. This is because until now the implementation of the teaching trilogy is still running and standing alone in an incomplete and comprehensive manner. Sometimes it is found in the field of implementation of acaras and ethics are not equipped with tattwa philosophy in it. So that the knowledge of the people will be more rooted and rely on the basic concept indeed. This of course will increasingly corner the minds of the people about the doctrine that is not fundamental. One of the truths of tattwa written in the Vedic Scriptures is the concept of cosmology or the creation of the universe. Cosmology is one of the important knowledge in Hinduism, because cosmology not only provides knowledge about the creation of the universe, furthermore cosmology can explain the true nature of human beings, which so far is still very difficult to obtain. In Bali, this cosmological teaching is implied in local theology. Local theology that lived and developed in Bali until now is imbued with the teachings of the Vedic scriptures. Especially Siwaistic texts that always put forward the teachings of knowledge about the reality of God, the way to reach Him and the creation of the universe, both great bhuana agung and bhuana alit.
