Abstract

This study investigates the impact of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approaches on enhancing critical thinking, creativity, and student engagement in science education among elementary school students in Palembang, Indonesia. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group was employed, involving 120 fifth-grade students from two public elementary schools. The experimental group participated in a 6-week STEM-based science learning program, which included hands-on activities, project-based learning, and collaborative problem-solving tasks, while the control group followed the conventional science curriculum. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, creativity assessments using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT), observation sheets, and student project evaluations. The results revealed significant improvements in critical thinking (M=85.6, SD=4.2) and creativity (M=82.4, SD=3.8) among students in the experimental group compared to the control group (critical thinking: M=72.3, SD=5.1; creativity: M=68.7, SD=4.5), with p-values of 0.001 and 0.002, respectively. Additionally, observational data indicated higher levels of student engagement, collaboration, and enthusiasm in the experimental group. These findings underscore the effectiveness of STEM-based learning in fostering higher-order thinking skills and innovation, while also highlighting the importance of contextualizing STEM education to local environments. However, challenges such as limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and rigid curricula were identified as barriers to implementation. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers and educators to invest in STEM infrastructure, provide professional development for teachers, and reform curricula to support the integration of STEM approaches in Indonesian elementary schools.

Abstract

Vocational education plays a crucial role in preparing a skilled workforce to meet industrial demands. However, the high unemployment rate among vocational high school (SMK) graduates, reaching 8.62% in February 2024 (BPS), indicates a gap between graduates' competencies and industry requirements. This study aims to examine the relationship between digital literacy, emotional intelligence, and job readiness among vocational students in Kabupaten Lima Puluh Kota. This research employed a quantitative approach with data collected through questionnaires and tests administered to 195 students from SMK Negeri 1 Guguak and SMK Negeri 2 Guguak. Multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the impact of digital literacy and emotional intelligence on job readiness. The results show that digital literacy significantly influences job readiness (t-value = 6.568, p < 0.05), highlighting the importance of mastering digital tools for employability. Similarly, emotional intelligence has a significant effect (t-value = 1.804, p < 0.05), demonstrating its role in workplace adaptability and collaboration. Furthermore, both variables collectively contribute to job readiness (F-value = 28.623, p < 0.05), explaining 54.9% of its variance. Moreover, strengthening digital literacy and emotional intelligence also supports the development of STEAM-based competencies, which are essential for preparing vocational students for the dynamic demands of the modern workforce. These findings emphasize the need for integrating digital literacy and emotional intelligence training in vocational education to enhance graduates' competitiveness in the labor market

Abstract

Based on the results of the pre-study, it is known that students' critical thinking skills are still not optimal. This is caused by the learning approach that has not been able to encourage the development of creativity and high-level thinking skills. To overcome this problem, the Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach combined with differentiated learning is offered as an innovative strategy to improve students' critical thinking skills. This study uses a quantitative approach with an experimental method. The design applied is Pre-Experimental with the form of One-Group Pretest-Posttest. The subjects of the study were fifth grade students of Elementary School 47/IV Jambi City. The critical thinking ability measurement instrument has been validated through expert judgment and limited trials. The indicators measured include the ability to identify problems, analyze arguments, evaluate information, draw logical conclusions, and make rational decisions. The results of the study showed a significant increase in critical thinking skills after the implementation of learning. The average pretest score of 53.23 increased to 75.32 in the posttest, which shows that the approach applied has a positive influence on the development of students' critical thinking skills. The integration of PBL with differentiated learning is not only able to encourage the improvement of critical thinking skills, but also provides space for individual learning needs, as well as increasing students' active involvement in the learning process. Theoretically, this study strengthens the relevance of constructivism theory in elementary education. Practically, the results of this study provide alternative effective and adaptive learning strategies for teachers in developing critical thinking skills in heterogeneous classes.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are a prevalent issue among lathe operators in small automotive repair workshops, largely due to repetitive movements, prolonged static positions, and awkward postures. This study employed the Nordic Body Map (NBM) and Workplace Ergonomic Risk Assessment (WERA) to evaluate ergonomic risks and identify affected body areas among lathe operators at XYZ workshop. Results indicate significant discomfort in the lower back, neck, shoulders, and wrists, linked to static postures and repetitive motions required for lathe operations. WERA scores revealed moderate ergonomic risks, particularly involving shoulder posture and work duration. Visual summaries in the form of bar and radar charts illustrate key risk factors. To mitigate these risks, the study proposes low-cost ergonomic interventions such as workstation adjustments, anti-vibration gloves, regular breaks, posture training, and rotational work schedules. These interventions not only address immediate discomfort but also have long-term potential for reducing MSDs when integrated into worker training programs. Moreover, the study’s findings can be utilized as contextual learning materials within applied science education (IPA terapan) at vocational schools (SMK), fostering ergonomic literacy among students and educators. This study fills a significant gap in ergonomic research in informal micro-industry settings and offers actionable insights for both occupational health improvement and science-based curriculum development in vocational education.

Abstract

The nervous system is a complex biological because the material is still abstract. The method used by teachers is the lecture method which causes students to have difficulty in understanding the material. To overcome this, a case study-based e-Module is needed that can provide students with cases related to the material and be a solution to students' difficulties related to minimal learning in class. This study aims to develop a case study-based e-Module on the nervous system material and analyze the feasibility of the developed product. This study uses the ADDIE development model consisting of Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluation. The results of the study showed that the developed e-Module obtained a percentage of 91.66% with the category "very feasible" in the material validation. At the media validation stage, a percentage value of 94.11% was obtained with the category "very feasible". The biology teacher's perception of the quality of the developed product obtained a percentage of 91.17% with the category "very good". Small group trials with students obtained a percentage of 95.20% with the category "very good" and large group trials obtained a percentage of 94.68% with the category "very good". Thus, it can be concluded that the product developed is feasible and practical and received by teachers and students as a learning tool that supports students' learning process on the nervous system material.
