Abstract

Environmental challenges stemming from the escalating volume of waste necessitate innovative solutions, one of which involves utilizing waste as a raw material for building materials. However, prevailing research in this domain has predominantly concentrated on their characteristics/performances, with a notable dearth in discussions pertaining to consumer-centric aspects. The objective of this research is to examine public responses, comprehension levels, and considerations associated with the utilization of waste-derived materials. Therefore, the development of waste-derived materials can be facilitated towards mass production. Employing qualitative research methods, this research unveils misconceptions surrounding waste-derived materials, as well as the readiness and the consideration aspects, such as material characteristic/performance, sustainability, economic factors, aesthetics, functionality, availability, and knowledge. The findings are anticipated to contribute insights for decision-making processes, policy formulation, and industrial practices, fostering the informed integration of waste-derived materials in the construction and related sectors.

Abstract

Climatic architecture is becoming a popular concept as it addresses issues of climate change, economy, and building health. The pandemic has heightened awareness of the importance of cross-ventilation, bringing the climatic concept back into focus for the design of new buildings and the development of existing ones. This study aims to: 1) Identify the characteristics of urban village houses with attached homes focused on thermal comfort, 2) Determine climatic design criteria for attached houses, 3) Understand the application of climatic concepts in attached houses. The methodology used is descriptive quantitative, with data from field conditions and references from journals. The results indicate that in addition to window placement aligned with wind direction, the use of wind chimneys and rain harvesting systems can be implemented in houses in densely built villages. This research is expected to provide knowledge about climatic architecture and offer solutions for its application in contemporary building design.

Abstract

Identification of Space Utilization in Pangka Sugar Factory with Adaptive Reuse ApproachAdaptive reuse is a strategy in historic building preservation that aims to maintain key architectural elements while introducing new, relevant functions (Plevoets & Van Cleempoel, 2019). Pangka Sugar Factory, as a colonial industrial building, has the potential for redevelopment through Adaptive reuse, but its space utilization has not been systematically analyzed. This research aims to identify the existing conditions and spatial utilization of Pangka Sugar Factory to formulate an appropriate Adaptive reuse strategy. The study employs a qualitative approach using field observations, documentation studies, and spatial mapping analysis to assess structural integrity and functional adaptability (Bullen & Love, 2011). The findings indicate that many spaces within the factory remain underutilized and face structural degradation. The proposed recommendations focus on preserving key historical elements while repurposing specific areas for contemporary functions such as cultural, commercial, and educational uses, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Abstract

A Study on Green Building Implementation in Indonesia from Stakeholder PerspectivesThe Implementing of Green Building (GB) in Indonesia faces multidimensional barriers due to differing stakeholder perceptions. This study compares the views of architects, civil servants, academics, and others on GB challenges and strategies. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, survey data from 137 respondents were analyzed. Results reveal a regional GB policy knowledge gap, with roughly 40% of architects and the public lacking understanding. While high investment costs are the primary barrier, solutions are polarized: professionals advocate for regulations, whereas the public emphasizes education. These findings highlight the need for a dual-track strategy combining regulations, fiscal incentives, and public education. Supported by collective leadership, this integration fosters a sustainable construction ecosystem that is legislatively compliant and socially embraced.

Abstract

Urban temporality has become an emerging field of study in architecture and urban design, offering new perspectives on understanding urban space. However, systematic reviews of the evolution of this discourse remain limited. This study applies a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA methodology to analyze the development of the concept of urban temporality in academic literature over the past decade. 200 publications containing "urban" and "temporality" were screened and assessed for eligibility, resulting in 25 studies analyzed bibliometrically. The findings identify six main themes, including Space Experience by Body Sense, Mobilities, Space Development, Spatial Dynamics, Infrastructure and Social Development, and Smart City. Trend analysis reveals a shift in focus from "rhythm" (2014–2019) to "social behavior" (2019–2024), reflecting a change in research orientation. This study contributes to mapping the thematic development and provides a foundation for future research into urban temporality.

Abstract

Identification of Distinctiveness as a Factor in Shaping Place Identity at Kampong Kauman SurakartaRegardless of its scale, each place has an identity shaped by defining attributes, including its distinctiveness. Kauman Surakarta is a historic area that is increasingly pressured by modernization and shifting community lifestyles, potentially diminishing its distinct character. Therefore, identifying the distinctive elements that continue to shape the identity of Kauman Surakarta is essential. This study employs a quantitative approach through the distribution of questionnaires to visitors. The findings show that the Grand Mosque ranks as the primary landmark of Kauman Surakarta, and visitors demonstrate a relatively strong awareness of its unique features. The narrow alleys, heritage walks, and traditional hand-drawn batik products emerge as the most appealing characteristics. Visitors reported positive impressions that encourage their intention to return. These results are expected to support stakeholders in ensuring the sustainability and preservation of Kauman Surakarta’s identity.

Abstract

Local Soil-Based Ecological Bricks Performance in a Modular System: A Case Study of Hikari SchoolThe construction industry contributes significantly to carbon emissions and material waste, thus necessitating more eco-friendly and efficient alternatives. This study aims to evaluate the performance of eco-bricks made from local soil in a modular system at Hikari School. The methodology employed is a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study design, involving literature review, field observations, documentation, and interviews. The results show that eco-bricks utilize local soil, are produced without firing, reduce cement requirements, and support an efficient and flexible interlocking system. Vertical voids serve as installation pathways, thermo-acoustic elements, and column spaces. Damage is generally influenced by user activity, humidity, and finishes, rather than structural failure of the material.

Abstract

AbstractThe design of the Menara Kudus Mosque showcases a strong influence of Hindu architecture, making it an iconic example of cultural acculturation in Indonesia. This paper explores how Hindu elements shaped the mosque's design, using a descriptive method and a case study approach. The findings reveal that the minaret, the mosque's ornaments resembling Hindu temples, and its entrance gate similar to a candi bentar demonstrate a harmonious blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture. Sunan Kudus utilized cultural acculturation as an effective strategy to facilitate the local community's acceptance of Islam. This mosque serves not only as a religious center but also as a symbol of the integration of Hindu and Islamic values. This research contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage and promotes religious tolerance through architectural expression.

Abstract

The Weaving Production Houses in Bayan Village serve as dedicated spaces for weaving activities. Three permanent buildings, Fetung Bayan, Jajaq Bayan, and Belida Bayan, are primary weaving production facilities. Visual comfort is critical in supporting weaving activities from morning until evening. Ensuring optimal lighting conditions is essential to maintaining productivity and minimising visual strain for weavers. This study aims to identify the most effective material combinations to enhance visual comfort within these weaving spaces. A descriptive-quantitative research approach is employed, utilising DIALux simulation software to develop strategies for optimising visual comfort. The findings suggest that combining traditional and modern materials improves lighting conditions. The recommended configuration includes galvalume ceilings with a 78% reflection factor, woven bamboo (bedeg) walls with a 40% reflection factor, and concrete flooring with an 80% reflection factor. Additionally, shading elements and a Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR) of 40% are proposed to enhance daylight control and reduce glare, ensuring a well-balanced luminous environment for weaving activities.

Abstract

Low-cost rental flats in Indonesia face significant thermal discomfort challenges due to high humidity and reliance on natural ventilation. This study evaluates the thermal environment of Kampung Nelayan II Sungailiat low-cost rental flat to understand housing quality in humid tropical coastal areas. Using a quantitative approach, measurements of air temperature, humidity, and wind speed were conducted in 11 residential units. Data were analyzed using the Thermal Humidity Index (THI) and CBE Adaptive Method. Results reveal a discrepancy: THI categorized all units as uncomfortable, while CBE simulations identified eight units as comfortable. Discussion suggests that while THI is a useful indicator of heat stress, it is limited in accounting for human physiological adaptation and airflow. The study concludes that the CBE Adaptive Model is more suitable for evaluating local thermal tolerance. Design strategies must prioritize passive cooling, specifically optimized building orientation and cross-ventilation.
