Abstract

Abstract. This article aims to describe the cultural conflicts occurred by Maghreb immigrants in Paris, especially female immigrants who have various conflicts, due to the difference perception of women both in Maghreb and in France. As a qualitative research, this research instrument is the researchers themselves with data from the novel Les Yeux Baissés by Tahar Ben Jelloun, a Maghreb author living in Paris. The data were then analyzed using the Semiotic theory of Roland Barthes: the novel is considered as a sign to be interpreted. The results of the study indicate that the cause of the conflicts is the differences in tradition, race, and religion. These differences make them feel “unaccepted” in France. Therefore, Moslem women in Paris have two types of cultural identities: Identity of being (the mother of Fathma, the main character) and Identity of becoming (Fathma, the main character). Besides, these Maghebian immigrants belong to the diaspora’s group: First, the Essentialists, diaspora who closed themselves off, just carried on their traditions, culture and religion as they did back home. Second, whom adopt the French culture, religion, and way of life. Third, those with 'floating' traits: born in France, do not know the cultural traditions of their hometown, only know French culture which “does not accept them”. Therefore it can be said that the ‘floating’ generation needs a 'special place' that is neither the culture of their parents, nor the culture of France, and that third place can be called a 'place of transit'.Keywords: Maghreb Diaspora, Moslem Women, Cultural Conflict, Place of Transit

Abstract

Abstract. The main character, Yasmin, in the novel Maya was described as a strong and independent woman. Her relationship with other characters in the novel was the main focus of this research in terms of the power relation between Yasmin and other characters. This study aimed to find out Yasmin’s traits (in addition to the existing traits analyzed) through the analysis of politeness strategies used by Yasmin in her relationship with other characters. Qualitative method was used in which data analyzed were utterances. The utterances were analyzed based on the power relation between speaker and hearer as well as the politeness strategies used. The discussion showed that Yasmin used positive politeness more than other strategies and put herself in the position of holding the power in her relationship with other characters. Thus, Yasmin can be considered as a person who is confident as well as flexible. Keywords: Politeness Strategies, Character, Power Relation

Abstract

Abstract. Fillmore is modern linguistic figure who pioneered the emergence of case grammar theory. He stated that case grammar is a new version of the theory modified from the old theory, namely generative transformation grammar. He developed case grammar after seeing a problem with the grammar of generative transformations. Thus, he declared that case grammar consists of two basic components: modality and proposition. In a line with this background, the purposes of this study are: (1) to reveal the modality in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore; (2) to reveal the preposition in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore. The type of this study is qualitative descriptive study. Data is in the form of conversation in the film. Thus, the data were taken through watching, listening, and note-taking techniques. The data was analyzed by using three steps. They are data reduction: researchers classified data based on elements of case grammar theory including modalities and propositions, data presentation: researchers displayed data in the form of the table in accordance of modalities and propositions, and interpreted data based on case grammar theory, and conclusion: researchers conducted data induction from interpretation results and ensured that the interpretation results fulfilled the elements of case grammar theory. The results show that the modality in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore consists of three modalities. They are tense modality, adverb modality, and negation modality. At the same time, the proposition consists of ten types. They are agentive case (A), experiential case (E), instrument case (I), objective case (O), source case (S), goal case (G), locative case (L), time case (T), companion case (CMP), and benefactive case (B). The results of this study strengthen Fillmore’s theory which states that as a part of sentence structures, modalities and propositions have types and forms and in the context of English film dialogue, the emergence of modalities and propositions is influenced by sentence structure used by the speaker in conveying his meaning. Keywords: Case Grammar, Film, Modality, Proposition

Abstract

Abstract. This study investigates the impact of Padlet, an online collaborative platform, on the creative writing and imagination of students in an Islamic private school in Pasuruan, comprising 10th and 11th grade students. This study is a qualitative approach, specifically employing narrative inquiry. Data collection methods include observations and semi-structured interviews with the students. Furthermore, data analysis involves identifying key themes and patterns from the interview data, allowing for insight into the influence of Padlet on students’ creativity and imagination. The findings of this study elucidate the potential originality inherent in utilizing Padlet as a medium for amplifying students’ imaginative faculties within the context of writing instruction. Although encountered with some obstacles, most students exhibited adeptness in surmounting these challenges. consequently, this research substantiates our comprehension of how digital tools such as Padlet can be effectively employed within educational settings to nurture creativity and cultivate superior writing proficiencies. Moreover, this investigation addresses a significant research gap concerning Padlet’s influence on imagination within writing courses. The derived insights furnish valuable guidance for teachers and educational institutions seeking to integrate analogues platforms in order to foster imaginative cogitation and self-expression, thereby fostering an enriched academic milieu.     Keywords: Creative Writing, Padlet Media, Students’ Imagination, EFL Learning

Abstract

Abstract. Bumi Manusia as a postcolonial novel became a vehicle for Toer to articulate his national identity as Indonesian during the Dutch colonialism. Its translation into This Earth of Mankind posts two questions of whether or not power relations are brought in the translation and how the translator represents Indonesian culture in English. In order to answer the two, postcolonial translation approach was employed. This research is qualitative for it aims at analyzing the text. Seven data were selected based on two indicators representing the most relation between the colonized and colonizer or postcoloniality of the Dutch East Indies and were analyzed employing Baker’s translation strategies. The findings reveal that there are unequal relations between the source language (Indonesian) and the target language (English). In This Earth of Mankind, the translator does not show Indonesian cultural representation. There are great loss of information, omission, biased information, and great loss of impactful meaning of the source language in the target language that create another colonial domain and leave colonial trace in the target language. Keywords: Postcolonial Translation, Bumi Manusia, Postcolonialism, Colonialism, Power Relations

Abstract

Abstract.  This research aims to identify the expressive speech act and its felicity condition uttered by high-profile figures. It specifically attempts to recognize the types of expressive speech act, the intended meaning of those expressive speech act types, and their felicity conditions. The qualitative method was applied to accomplish those study objectives. The data were high-profile figures’ utterances collected from covid-19 related news on an online news site (https://www.merdeka.com/).  This research focuses on the expressive speech acts since they are also known as evaluative speech acts. Moreover, analyzing expressive speech acts uttered by public figures in covid-19 related news may give insight on how the Indonesia’s government manage covid-19 cases. The results confirm that the utterances taken from that site fulfilled some types of expressive speech act, namely praising, thanking, deploring, lamenting, congratulating, and flattering. The intended meaning of those types of expressive speech act are determined by interpreting the speakers’ intention based on the context. Furthermore, the felicity condition of each expressive speech act type is discovered by conducting four formulas, which are preparatory condition, propositional content, sincerity condition, and essential condition. These formulas determine the validity of the utterances. Thus, people reading the news can refer that the utterances are not hoaxes.   Keywords: Expressive Speech Act, Felicity Condition, Covid-19, Public Figures

Abstract

Abstract. This descriptive qualitative research examines the distribution of translation studies of Sinta-indexed journals (S1 and S2) through a dataset of 19 journals and 60 articles. The objective of this article is to offer a clear depiction of the current direction that research is taking within the field of translation. The empirical results derived from the study demonstrate a discernibly higher frequency of S2 journals in comparison to their S1 counterparts. This observed disparity can reasonably be attributed to the divergent criteria employed in the classification of these journals as well as the ongoing progress and expansion of the journal landscape. S1 journals exhibit a greater inclination toward prioritizing applied translation studies, whereas both categories demonstrate a prevailing prevalence of research centered around pure translation, thereby suggesting a possible imperative to advance the deployment of research with applied orientations. The results of this study demonstrate a prevalence of the qualitative methodology in translation studies across both S1 and S2 journals. Quantitative research is notably infrequent, constituting a minority fraction of the publications, whereas mixed-method approaches are also limited but present to some extent. Collaborative efforts are observed in S1 publications, with larger-scale projects, whereas S2 publications involve smaller, collaborative teams. Foreign researchers contribute more to S1, while S2 showcases predominantly Indonesian authors, but both display international collaboration. Thus, encouraging more applied translation research and industry collaboration can enhance the practical impact of translation studies. The above findings are significant not only for scholars engaged in translation studies but also for journal editors when making editorial judgments. Keywords: Translation Studies, Research Orientation,  Sinta 1, Sinta 2

Abstract

Abstract. This study is to describe the influencing factors of students’ affective silence in English classroom interaction. It used descriptive qualitative method taking all twelfth-grade students of science class consisting of 31 participants as the data resources. Three instruments were utilized to gain the data, namely (1) observation, (2) questionnaire, and (3) interview. The findings of this study show that there were ten affective factors influencing students’ silence in the classroom. They are (1) feeling nervous, (2) lack of self-esteem, (3) lack of self-confidence, (4) fear of making mistakes and worrying about other people's judgment, (5) worrying about their inability, (6) feeling unable to meet the teacher's expectations, (7) students’ personality, (8) avoiding awkwardness, (9) feeling embarrassed, and (10) avoiding showing off their ability. These factors empirically indicate that students' silence during the teaching and learning process takes place in the classroom is not always influenced by their cognitive inability but the affective aspect turns out to be something that quite dominates their inability to express themselves. Based on these findings, it takes into account that the students were not able to participate in teaching and learning process because of affective factors that trigger their inactivity. Keywords: Affective, Passiveness, Silence

This study used quantitative approach with ex-post facto research design. The researcher conducted this study at one of the public senior high schools in Gresik. There were 30 eleven graders taken as subjects from one class. Then, to gather the data, two instruments were used. First were the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) close-ended questionnaires. Second was students' writing scores in an explanation text writing. To analyze the data, the researcher used both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (ANOVA). The results found that the eleven grades’ students had a moderate level of writing anxiety. And the somatic anxiety was dominant had by them. Another result revealed that there is no significant difference in each type of writing anxiety on the students' writing achievement in explanation text. And only cognitive anxiety had a moderate size effect on the student's scores. So, based on this study, the writing anxiety did not influence whether the students succeed in their explanation text writing. Keywords: Writing Anxiety, Writing Achievement, Explanation Text
