Abstract

This research was conducted to explore Heathcliff in Emily Brontë?s Wuthering Heights novel psychologically. The researcher was aimed to find out the factors which contributed to the development of Heathcliff?s neurosis and to reveal the neurotic trends that appear in Heathcliff as he attempts to fight against his conflicts. The researcher used qualitative method with content analysis approach in conducting this research. The researcher analyzed Heathcliff by applying the literary theory and psychological theory. The researcher found that the main cause of Heathcliff?s neurosis as portrayed in Wuthering Heights novel was basic anxiety produced by the social environment where he lived. The factors that contributed to his development of neurosis were familial interference and the Victorian culture based on competition. Consequently, he developed three (3) neurotic trends as his defense mechanism to fight against his conflicts. These neurotic trends were (1) moving toward people; (2) moving against people; and (3) moving away from people.

Abstract

Anxiety is part of the defense mechanism. Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies unconsciously used to defend a person from anxiety arising from unacceptable thoughts or feelings. This study found the types of Moses? anxiety and investigate the defense mechanism that Moses employed in reducing his anxiety by employing Freud?s concept as the main theory. The design of this research was qualitative research with content analysis as its approach. As the data, this study employed words including narrations and dialogues that were taken from Exodus Gods and Kings? movie script.This study showed that Moses character experienced three types of anxieties covering neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety, and realistic anxiety. Furthermore, Moses employed five typess of the defense mechanism covering repression, formation, isolation, denial, and aggression. The conclusion of this research considered Moses character experienced neurotic anxiety when he identified a boy that represented as the authority figure who was punishing him. The moral anxiety experienced in four times, overall happened when he felt guilty and realistic anxiety experienced three times because he managed some threats from the outer world. Moreover, all these features of the defense mechanism used to cope with Moses?s anxious feeling. The implication of this research provided another point of view in seeing Exodus: Gods and Kings' movie as the portrayal of the way how people can't suffer anxiety easily because anxious feeling happened from many factors and how people tried to use the defense mechanism to reduce anxiety. Keywords: Anxiety, Defense Mechanism, Psychoanalysis.ABSTRAKKecemasan merupakan bagian dari mekanisme pertahanan. Mekanisme pertahanan adalah strategi psikologis yang secara tidak sadar digunakan untuk melindungi seseorang dari kecemasan yang timbul dari pikiran atau perasaan yang tidak dapat diterima. Studi ini membahas tentang jenis-jenis kecemasan yang dialami oleh Musa dan mekanisme pertahanan yang digunakan Musa dalam mengurangi kecemasannya dengan menggunakan konsep Freud sebagai teori utama. Desain penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan analisis isi. Sebagai data, penelitian ini menggunakan kata-kata termasuk narasi dan dialog yang diambil dari naskah film Exodus: Gods and Kings.Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa karakter Musa mengalami tiga jenis kecemasan yang meliputi kecemasan neurotik, kecemasan moral, dan kecemasan realistis. Selain itu, Musa juga menggunakan lima jenis mekanisme pertahanan yang meliputi represi, formasi, isolasi, penolakan, dan agresi. Dengan demikian, kesimpulan dari penelitian ini bahwa karakter Musa mengalami kecemasan neurotik ketika dia melihat seorang anak laki-laki yang diwakili sebagai tokoh otoritas yang menghukumnya. Kecemasan moral dialami empat kali, secara keseluruhan terjadi ketika dia merasa bersalah tentang situasi dan kecemasan realistis yang dialami tiga kali oleh karakter Musa karena dia mendapat beberapa ancaman dari dunia luar. Selain itu, semua fitur mekanisme pertahanan ini digunakan untuk mengatasi perasaan cemas yang dialami Musa. Implikasi dari penelitian ini memberikan pandangan lain dalam melihat film Exodus: Gods and Kings sebagai penggambaran bahwa setiap orang tidak dapat mengalami kecemasan dengan mudah, karena perasaan cemas terjadi karena banyak faktor dan bagaimana orang mencoba menggunakan mekanisme pertahanan untuk mengurangi kecemasan tersebut.Kata Kunci: Kecemasan, Mekanisme Pertahanan, Psikoanalisis

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze Sophie’s needs based on the theory of Hierarchy of Human Needs by Abraham Harold Maslow. The purposes of this research were to find out the needs of the main character from the Rooftoppers novel and also finding how she fulfills all her needs. This research used descriptive qualitative research because the data were shown in words. There were two discussions taken in this research. First, is the identification of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in the novel through the main character. The second is the identification of how the main character fulfill her needs according to Maslow’s theory. Rooftoppers novel was used in this research as the data source. The data consisted of paragraphs, phrases, words, and dialogues through the novel that showed Sophie’s needs. The results of the research showed that Sophie managed to fulfill all of her needs both at home and on her way of finding her long lost mother in Paris. Starting from the basic needs of physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization need. Sophie managed to fulfill all of her needs through her actions, dialogs, habits, and thoughts.

Abstract

Stereotypes are preconceptions about individuals of group. Stereotypes are the common phenomena that happen in the daily activities of language use where sometimes people do not realize that they are stereotyping others. It is caused by a diversity of issues among the society. People tend to build some general perspectives that include the positive and negative things about a group of people. As a reflection of the real life, movies can also contain the phenomenon of stereotype such as in Zootopia movie. This research is aimed to describe the categories of stereotype and also to analyze the function of stereotype that were performed by several characters in Zootopia movie. This research was conducted by using descriptive method and qualitative approach. Data were taken from movie script in the form of utterances. The results of this research show that there are forty three data which are indicated as stereotyping utterances from eleven characters in Zootopia movie. In addition, the researchers identified six out of eight stereotype categories that have been used in this movie, namely Gender, Race, Physical Features, Occupation and Socioeconomic Status, National Groups and Other Category. Moreover, the researchers identified two stereotype functions in the movie, they are individual function and social or collective function.

Abstract

English Vinglish (2012) is an Indian movie inspired from Gauri Shinde’s mother. This movie tells about a woman named Sashi who struggle for her social identity. This problem background encourages the researcher to analyze Sashi’s character and characterization and the change of her social identity. The researcher limits the focus of Sashi’s character and her social life. The researcher uses characterization theory and Social Identity Theory to conduct the analysis. The data are analyzed by using qualitative descriptive method. The findings of this research reveal that: Sashi is the main character in the movie, because she is given much contribution of the story. The characterization is about Sashi’s physical appearance, personality, social status and social relationship. Sashi’s physical appearance is, she is a beautiful woman with beautiful eyes, long black hair and white skin. Her personality shows that she is a patient woman, a loving person, has a high tolerance and a loyal person. Her social status is a woman with low education and not a modern woman. Sashi has relationships with other characters in this movie, good and bad relationships. The analysis about the change of Sashi’s social Identity is divided into two processes: self-categorization and social comparison. The researcher concludes that Sashi changes her social identity from an ordinary housewife who does not know English become well-educated woman who fluent in English. The researcher finds that to change Sashi’s social identity she has to pass self-categorization and social comparison.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the character and characterization of monster in Frankenstein through theory of characterization by Boggs and Petrie. It was classified into characterization through appearance, action, dialogue, reactions of other characters, and choice of name of the character. The characteristics of monster were classified into the Big Five Theory by McCrae and Costa. They were openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion, and neuroticism. The used of the theory aimed to reveal the personality of monster that had similarities with human personality. To know what the character and characterization of monster, the researcher applied descriptive-qualitative method. The result showed that monster had a terrible appearance. Through the dialogue, he was an ambitious creature. Through the action he was very interest in new things. The other characters felt frightened to see his horrible appearance. The monster was called ‘monster’ because of his terrible appearance. Based on the Big Five, monster was classified into conscientiousness because of his ambition. He was an agreeableness because of his kindness. He was classified into openness because he interested in new things. He was also categorized into neuroticism because he was very vengeful. The last type of the Big Five named extraversion was not found in this study because he was not a sociable creature. Thus, the monster who looked very terrible had many positiveness rather than the negative characteristics.

Abstract

This research aims to determine which language styles are used in buying and selling merchants in Bunyu Island. North Kalimantan and to know what language style function is contained in greeting buying and selling merchants in Bunyu Island, Kalimantan North. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods that describe the use of language styles in buying and selling in Bunyu Island market, North Kalimantan. The object of this research is traders and buyers who are doing buy and sell transactions. Data on the use of the language styles of merchants and buyers is obtained through observation. The techniques used in this research are the recording techniques, the reading techniques and the data analysis techniques. The results of this study are (1) the style of the language used in sale and purchase transactions in Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan, the comparative language style, the style of language opposition, the style of association language, and the repetition language style, (2) The function of language style that Contained in the greeting of buying and selling merchants in Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan, namely the function explaining, function strengthening, function animate the Dead object, the function of stimulating the association, the function raises laughter, and functions to garnish.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the level of racism that happened to African American as seen in Selma movie. Further, the other purpose is to give the reflection about the effect of the racism toward African-American people as depicted in the movie. This research focused to examine the racism by using Jones’ and Day’s theory about the level of racism and on how the effect of racism itself. Further, the researcher used qualitative-descriptive method and Mikos’ data analysis for the movie. In this movie, the researcher finds the three levels of racism have appeared. The racisms are institutionalized racism, personally mediated racism and internalized racism. The first level which is institutionalized racism is marked by the legitimize and systematic intimidation in voting booths. Further, this racism gives positive and negative effect.  Secondly, the personally mediated racism also appeared and it is shown by the limitedness of public access, police brutality and everyday avoidance towards black people. Thus, personally mediated racism also gives positive and negative effect. The last level of racism which appeared in this movie is internalized racism. This racism marked by the acceptance of stigma from white people to black people. Additionally, this racism only gives negative effect because it makes the victim of racism felt insecure, unworthy, and disbelief towards themselves.

Abstract

Folk stories have cultural values that are used by the community as a picture of actions in everyday life. This study aims to find out the cultural values contained in the legend of the father-in-law so that it can be used as learning in life. This research was included in the field research using qualitative descriptive research. The source of data in this study was an informant named Kasman. The cultural value of human relations with God is manifested in the form of wara and karma ceremonies. The cultural value of human relations with nature is manifested in the form of riverside villages, hunting, and using plants. The cultural value of human relations with society is manifested in the form of joint learning, ceremony invitations, the search for spouses, togetherness in ceremonies. The cultural value of human and other human relationships is manifested in the form of cooperation, affection, friendship, respect, and cultural values of human relations with oneself manifested in the form of intelligence, responsibility, worry, and not thinking.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out the way of Imperator Furiosa’s character represents in radical feminism in Mad Max Fury Road film (2015). The design of this research was qualitative research. The data of this research were taken from dialogue, scene, action, and speech based on the film. The data of this research were analyzed by using radical feminism theory by Rosemarie. P. Tong in Feminist Thought a More Comprehensive Introduction (2009) and the categorized as Furiosa’s character representation of radical feminism through the theory of indirect characterization by Kelly Griffth. The result of this research showed Imperator Furiosa represented two kinds of radical feminism. First was radical libertarian feminism which were androgyny which found in the Furiosa’s character appearance, character dialogue, character speech, character action. And seizes the meaning of reproduction which found in the Furiosa’s character dialogue. Second was radical cultural feminism which is women using reproduction as a trump card and power which found in the Furiosa’s character speech.
