Abstract

The emergence of conflicts in various countries has been arising in the past few years. A country’s leader is one of the important factors in determining the continuance of conflicts. Their language influences both their own people and the parties who are not directly involved in the conflict. Isaac Herzog’s ceremonial address at the U.S. Congress in 2023 can be used to analyse the rhetorical strategies in influencing the U.S. committee in the conflict with Palestine. Using Norman Fairclough’s three dimensions Critical Discourse Analysis model, the goal of this study is to reveal how the speaker exercises power in speech and influences their audience, by analysing the text from its textual, discursive, and social dimensions. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The result of this study found the rhetorical strategy in shaping and influencing audiences, such as topic control through strategic lexical choices that frame actors ideologically, Intertextuality references that aligns with audience values to increase persuasion, and utilize sociocultural context to justify ideologies and actions. This analysis emphasized the importance of language in maintaining power, and rhetorical strategies in political discourse as tools for ideologies transfer and preservation.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the personality dynamics of Phil Burbank, the main character in the film The Power of the Dog, through the lens of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory on the concept of the tripartite principle of the psyche: id, ego, and superego. The 2021 film The Power of the Dog, written and directed by Jane Campion, and its script were used as the primary data source. This research employed a qualitative method and a psychoanalysis approach to examine how these three components of personality interacted within Phil Burbank. Phil Burbank was portrayed as a dominant masculine figure who harbored deep and complex inner conflicts, based on the categorization of the situation, identified in Phil’s aggressive behaviour and his need to dominate those around him, reflecting unsublimated unconscious drives. The ego was observed in his attempts to conform to social norms and preserve his masculine image despite internal conflict with his desires. The superego was manifested through moral judgments and efforts to uphold internalized morality, shaping his attitudes and worldview. The results indicated that the id was the most dominant structure with eight data, followed by ego with four data, and superego with two data. Concluded from this research was the idea that Phil’s inability to reconcile his desires (id), his social façade (ego), and his moral conscience (superego) led to his self-destruction. This psychological imbalance was reflected in emotional instability, toxic relationships, and ultimately, his death.

Abstract

Persons with autism disorder generally have difficulty in social and communication. Due to these impairments, they are often ignored and misunderstood by others. One of the phenomena of autism is portrayed in a film entitled Please Stand By. This study is aimed to analyze the features of autistic person and the kinds of responses given by autistic person represented by Wendy, an autistic character in the film. This study employed descriptive qualitative method and a psycholinguistic approach. In addition, this study used Wing and Gould’s theory to identify the features of autistic person and Rothwell’s theory to identify the kinds of responses given by autistic person. The results of this study show two important points. First, based on the findings of this study, there are three features of autistic person experienced by Wendy, they are qualitative impairment in reciprocal social interaction, qualitative impairment in verbal and non-verbal communication and in imaginative activity, and markedly restricted repertoire of activities and interests. Second, there are three kinds of responses given by Wendy, they are cognitively irrelevant responses, cognitively relevant responses, and cognitively disruptive and socially inappropriate responses. In cognitively disruptive and socially inappropriate responses, there are odd responses, relevant but not too polite responses, and marginally relevant responses. The findings reveal that persons with autism can provide relevant responses to others even though they have difficulty in social and communication.

Abstract

This research aimed to reveal Ronald Lamola’s discursive construction at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) due to the Israel-Palestine conflict. As the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Ronald Lamola represented South Africa to deliver opening remarks before providing its claims and supporting evidence to the court. In this research, the researcher revealed how Ronald Lamola constructed his identity as the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, and how he positioned himself in the Israel-Palestine conflict through his speech at the ICJ. The researcher used qualitative descriptive methods as the methodology for the data displayed. The data was analyzed using the five discursive strategies proposed by Reisigl and Wodak (2009), which were the nomination, predication, argumentation, perspectivization, and mitigation and intensification. As a result, the researcher finds that Ronald Lamola’s opening remarks were constructed with these five discursive strategies, which were dominated by the use of the nomination strategy, that shaped his audience’s perception of the actors and situation referred. The overall findings not only showed his identity and position as the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, but also as a member of the United Nations (UN). The findings of this research were expected to contribute to the Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) field by providing insights into the use of discursive strategies in national identity, political ideology, and international law discursively throughout certain situations.

Abstract

Penyengat Island, as one of the centers of Malay-Islamic cultural heritage in Indonesia, holds significant potential to be developed as a culture-based halal tourism destination. This study aims to analyze the potential for halal tourism development on Penyengat Island by leveraging its rich historical legacy and the Islamic values embedded in Malay society, as well as identifying strategic factors through a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). The research employs a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with stakeholders, and reviews of relevant documents. The findings reveal that Penyengat Island possesses strengths such as its rich historical heritage, including the Sultan Riau Mosque, the tomb of Raja Ali Haji, and well-preserved Malay-Islamic cultural traditions. However, weaknesses such as limited infrastructure and a lack of trained human resources in halal tourism pose major challenges. On the other hand, opportunities like the growing global demand for halal tourism and government support can be leveraged for further development. Threats include competition with other halal tourism destinations and the risk of uncontrolled cultural commercialization. Based on these findings, the study proposes development strategies, including infrastructure improvement, human resource training, and integrated promotion to position Penyengat Island as a leading halal tourism destination. The implications of this research not only contribute to local tourism development but also enrich academic literature on culture-based halal tourism. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the impact of capitalist society on Arthur’s character development as seen in Joker film by using Karl Marx’s idea about marxism and characterization in film theory by Boggs and Petrie. Further, the research method used in this study was qualitative research with a marxism approach. The researcher also designed this research as a film study by using Mikos’s data analysis in film theory to conduct research. In this film, the researcher finds two social conditions that appeared as common features in capitalist society. The two aspects of capitalist society in the film are class distinction and human exploitation. The class distinctions in this film are divided into the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. In this case, only Arthur’s character in this film is shown to face many exploitations due to different classes. As a result, these social conditions in capitalist society influenced Arthur Fleck as the main character. As a dynamic character, it is shown how Arthur developed from a patient, caring, and kind-hearted person into an impulsive, reckless, and psychopathic person. These character developments are portrayed by Arthur’s external actions dialogues, and appearance.

Abstract

The field of ecocritical literary studies has consistently advanced alongside the deepening comprehension of the link between people and the natural environment. The research aims to analyze the representation of human-environment relationships depicted in The Voices of Marrakesh: A Record of a Visit travel writing by Elias Canetti, employing Greg Garrard’s ecocritical framework. Several key concepts of ecocriticism are presented such as pollution, pastoral, wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, animals, and the Earth. These representations were explored through qualitative content analysis in travel writing, as one of the forms of literature. The result of this research shows three representations concerning pastoral, wilderness, and dwelling issues. The interconnection between human and natural environment is portrayed as being strongly influenced by cultural, emotional, and spatial experience.Keywords: ecocriticism, human, natural environment, travel writing

Abstract

This research examines how the hero's journey is represented through the animated Puss in Boots: The Last Wish film that was released in 2022, using Christopher Vogler's hero's journey theory. Vogler's twelve-stage model is used to trace the development of the main character, Puss, and relate each stage to the conflicts that he experienced throughout the journey. This study uses a qualitative method, and the data taken consist of dialogues and scenes of the film. The results of this study show that the Puss in Boots: The Last Wish film represents and follows Vogler's hero's journey through the character of Puss. In the film, Puss had faced ten stages and passed all of them with a character development that showed his transformation from an arrogant and individualistic person to a wise and appreciative figure. Each stage of the hero's journey not only illustrates Puss's transformation but also shows values about courage, friendship, and appreciation of the meaning of life as messages for the audience.

Abstract

Tayangan Anies VS Prabowo VS Ganjar - Epic Rap Battles of Presidency 2024 merupakan tayangan yang menyampaikan kritik dan sindiran terhadap capres dan cawapres pada Pemilu 2024 yang dikemas dengan bahasa satire dan disampaikan melalui battle rap. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jenis dan fungsi implikatur dari tuturan satire yang terdapat pada tayangan Epic Rap Battles of Presidency 2024. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian kepustakaan dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Adapun data dari penelitian yaitu berupa tuturan satire yang terdapat dalam tayangan YouTube dengan judul Anies VS Prabowo VS Ganjar – Epic Rap Battles of Presidency 2024 dengan sumber data yaitu kanal YouTube skinnyindonesian2024. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah metode simak dengan teknik dasar yaitu teknik sadap dan teknik Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC) sebagai teknik lanjutan. Sedangkan metode analisis data yang digunakan yaitu metode padan ekstralingual dan metode penyajian data menggunakan metode penyajian informal. Hasil analisis tuturan satire pada tayangan Anies VS Prabowo VS Ganjar - Epic Rap Battles of Presidency 2024 menunjukkan terdapat satu jenis implikatur yaitu implikatur nonkonvensional dalam tayangan tersebut. Sedangkan fungsi implikatur yang ditemukan pada tuturan satire terdapat fungsi asertif 11 data, komisif 1 data, ekspresif 4 data, dan direktif 10 data. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut dapat dilihat bahwa fungsi implikatur yang dominan adalah fungsi implikatur asertif. Dari hasil analisis fungsi implikatur terdapat temuan berupa tuturan yang mengandung fungsi implikatur ganda di dalamnya. Hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan bahasa dalam satire politik dapat memunculkan multitafsir.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbicara Mustofa mengalami gangguan berupa gagap dan bibir sumbing. Terhambatnya Mustofa dalam mengekspresikan pemikiran melalui sebuah tuturan. Tujuan penelitian mendeskripsikan modus kalimat, bentuk bahasa gagap dan performansi huruf konsonan tuturan Mustofa. Jenis penelitian adalah kepustakaan. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian yaitu tuturan Mustofa. Sumber data unggahan kanal youtube. Pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik simak bebas libat cakap dan teknik dasar catat. Metode analisisnya menentukan data-data, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan teori psikolinguistik intralingual. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 3 jenis modus kalimat, deklaratif, interogatif, dan imperatif. Bentuk bahasa gagap, pengulangan (repetisi) bunyi vokal dan konsonan, suku kata, kata, frasa. Bentuk perpanjangan, penyisipan/penambahan, penjedaan dan hambatan berbicara. Performansi bunyi konsonan tuturan Mustofa yaitu huruf [t], [k], [g], [c], [j], [b], [p], dan [h]. Modus interogatif, pengulangan kata dan performansi huruf konsonan [k] dan [g] merupakan dominan muncul. Gagap pada Mustofa termasuk gagap ringan, karena faktor psikologisnya membutuhkan penyesuaian terhadap lingkungan dan orang baru.
