Abstract

This study discusses folk performing arts in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) as a cultural text with a focus on the formation of performance, social values, and economic impacts. Arts such as Wayang Topeng, Tayub, Jathilan, and Srandul were chosen because of their role in strengthening cultural identity and the sustainability of social values in society. The study aims to understand performing arts as an aesthetic medium and socio-economic function. Qualitative methods based on ethnography and hermeneutics were used, with direct observation in five regions of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. In-depth interviews were conducted with artists and communities supporting the arts. Data were also obtained from related documents. Hermeneutic analysis highlights performing arts as a representation of aesthetic values and social functions related to the local context. The results of the study show that folk art has a role in social rituals, such as Wayang Topeng to ward off disaster, and Tayub in the Bersih Desa tradition. In addition, this art supports the local economy, creates jobs, and increases tourism. In conclusion, DIY folk performing arts not only function as entertainment, but also as a social and economic driver for the community, so it is important to preserve them.

Abstract

Grobogan Regency is building a positive image and promoting the region's superior potential through the Javanese philosophy concept "Cakra Manggilingan" which is manifested in the visual identity of the city branding "The Miracle of Charm". Cakra Manggilingan which means the rotating cycle of life and the balance of nature, is represented in the visual identity of the city branding to illustrate the dynamics and potential of Grobogan which continues to grow. This study aims to analyze and describe the meaning of the symbol and tagline "The Miracle of Charm" in the visual identity of the city branding of Grobogan with the Design Thinking approach. This approach was chosen to understand the needs and aspirations of the community (empathize), formulate problems (define), develop innovative idea concepts (ideate), create a prototype of the visual identity of the city branding (prototype), and test the effectiveness of the design (test). The descriptive qualitative research method was used with data collection techniques in the form of interviews, questionnaires and literature studies. The results of the analysis show that the design of the city branding logo uses visual elements, namely leaves, corn, the Kender mountains, water flow, the eternal fire of Mrapen, and Boyong Grobog to represent the diversity of Grobogan's potential in terms of tourism, social, culture, religion, culinary, and agribusiness. The tagline "The Miracle of Charm" strengthens and unites the previous taglines that reflect the magic and charm of Grobogan which comes from the harmony between nature, culture, and its people

Abstract

The Ntak Awo Dance is a traditional performing art originating from the Hamparan Rawang area, Sungai Penuh City, Jambi Province. Initially, this dance functioned as part of a traditional ritual, but over time it has undergone a transformation into an entertainment dance popularized by a local artist named Arwati. This article aims to describe the form, function, and cultural meaning of the Ntak Awo Dance as a representation of the identity of the Rawang community. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with an ethnographic approach through field observations, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The results show that the Ntak Awo Dance is performed in various social events such as weddings, cultural festivals, community activities, and official state events. This dance is usually performed with energetic musical accompaniment, distinctive poetry or rhymes, and a "three-step" movement pattern that follows the rhythm of the music. The clothing used is polite everyday clothing, demonstrating the closeness between this art form and the daily lives of the community. In addition to being a medium of entertainment, the Ntak Awo Dance also functions as a means of preserving traditional values, a medium for cultural education, and a symbol of the collective identity of the Rawang community. Therefore, the Ntak Awo Dance not only needs to be preserved physically through performances, but also contextually through cultural education and strengthening local narratives in building regional cultural identity.

The development of aesthetic products for interior accessories has evolved with a variety of designs and materials. Interior accessories based on local potential and eco-friendly products are the hopes of any society in the era of increasing awareness of eco-friendly lifestyles. This research aims to create interior accessory products with local natural plant growth materials through the use of ecoprint textile crafts as a basis for the development. To realise this aim, a creative art method is necessary. These methods include: (a) product design, (b) preparation of materials and techniques, (c) the process of making ecoprint decorative motifs on fabrics, (d) application of ecoprint fabrics combined with other materials as surface decoration of prospective interior accessory element products, (d) finishing of prototype interior accessory element products from the combination of ecoprint, (e) analysis of creative results of the developed interior aesthetic element products. The products of this project consist of hanging lampshade, sitting lamp, and table ware products. It is expected that the results of this creation can enrich the variety of eco-friendly-based interior accessories craft products, which are developed from local potential.

Abstract

This study explores the transformation of Balinese and Indonesian cultural performances through the processes of Disneyfication and spectacle, focusing on three popular case studies: the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple, the Devdan Show in Nusa Dua, and the Varuna Show at Bali Safari. Through comparative analysis and the integration of audience reviews, this research examines how traditional rituals are increasingly repackaged as theatrical entertainment designed to appeal to global tourists. The findings reveal a progressive shift from sacred, community-centered expressions to visually driven, commercially oriented performances. While these adaptations enhance the accessibility and visibility of Indonesian culture, they also raise critical questions about authenticity, commodification, and the loss of spiritual depth. The study argues that cultural performances are not only shaped by tradition but are continually reimagined through the dynamics of tourism, technology, and global consumer expectations. This evolution invites reflection on the broader implications of cultural tourism in shaping how heritage is presented, perceived, and preserved in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study examines Simalungun pop songs by Damma Silalahi, which have significantly influenced the development of popular music in Simalungun society. The main objectives of this study are to analyze the musical structure, uncover the textual meaning, and evaluate the social function of ten purposively selected songs. The study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. The analysis of musical structure is conducted using William P. Malm's theory of scale, melodic contour, and melodic formula, while the analysis of the meaning of the lyrics is based on semiotic theory and the theory of meaning in semantics and pragmatics. The main findings show that Damma Silalahi's songs combine modern style with traditional Simalungun musical roots. The lyrics express themes of love, social criticism, religiosity, and respect for parents. The social functions of these songs include expressive, educational, and recreational functions. Damma's works not only represent the dynamics of Simalungun culture but also reconstruct cultural identity within a contemporary framework. This study contributes new understanding of the transformation of regional music in a society experiencing modernization and globalization.
