Abstract

Background: The nutritional status of pregnant women, as assessed by Body Mass Index (BMI), plays a crucial role in influencing the process and outcomes of childbirth. BMI is used as an indicator of maternal nutritional status, categorized as underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5–24.9), and overweight (≥25). BMI has been shown to be associated with various maternal complications. Although BMI demonstrates a significant impact on maternal outcomes, further research is needed to serve as a basis for health promotion strategies in antenatal care services. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between maternal BMI and pregnancy outcomes, and to establish an analytical basis for health promotion strategies. Methods: This study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach and was conducted in the working area of Ngemplak I Health Center, Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The research sample was 98 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires sourced from the KIA book, then analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p <0.05. Results: The study showed a significant relationship between maternal BMI and type of delivery (p = 0.037), while no significant associations were found with hemorrhage (p = 0.620), premature labor (p = 0.820), and prolonged labor (p = 0.825). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between maternal nutritional status based on BMI and the type of delivery. However, no significant relationship was observed with hemorrhage, premature labor, or prolonged labor. These findings can serve as a basis for health promotion strategies, particularly in nutritional education during pregnancy to prevent delivery complications

Abstract

Background: Post-extubation patients frequently experience compromised respiratory function due to ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction (VIDD) and respiratory muscle fatigue resulting from prolonged mechanical ventilation and sedation effects. This condition manifests as decreased vital lung capacity and reduced oxygen saturation, significantly increasing the risk of extubation failure. The global extubation failure rate ranges from 10-20% in adult ICU populations, with reintubation carrying substantially higher mortality risk. Objective: To determine the effect of respiratory muscle stretching exercises on oxygen saturation in post-extubation patients in the Intensive Care Unit of Bali Mandara General Hospital. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with non-equivalent control group design was conducted from January to May 2025. The sample consisted of 38 post-extubation patients divided into treatment group (n=19) and control group (n=19) through purposive sampling technique. The treatment group received respiratory muscle stretching exercises targeting diaphragm, intercostal, and accessory respiratory muscles for 2 consecutive days with a frequency of 2 times daily (15-20 minutes per session), while the control group received standard care. Results: The treatment group demonstrated significant improvement in oxygen saturation from baseline 92.11±1.853% to post-intervention 96.84±1.119% (mean change 4.73±1.593%, 95% CI: 3.96-5.50, p<0.001). In contrast, the control group showed only minimal non-significant change from 92.42±1.465% to 92.79±1.357% (mean change 0.37±1.342%, 95% CI: -0.29-1.03, p=0.175). The between-group difference in oxygen saturation improvement was statistically significant (4.36%, 95% CI: 3.378-5.342, p<0.001) with large effect size (Cohen’s d=2.18). All participants tolerated the intervention well with no adverse events reported, and subgroup analysis revealed greater benefit in patients with longer mechanical ventilation duration (>5 days). Conclusions: Respiratory muscle stretching exercises are highly effective in improving oxygen saturation in post-extubation patients and can be implemented as a safe, cost-effective nursing protocol to prevent post-extubation complications and reduce extubation failure rates in ICU settings..

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem caused by inadequate nutrient intake and recurrent infections, particularly during the First 1,000 Days of Life (HPK). Low parental knowledge regarding balanced nutrition, sanitation, and child growth monitoring contributes to the high incidence of stunting. The use of technology, especially Android-based mobile applications widely utilized by the Indonesian population, offers a significant opportunity as an effective medium for education and early detection of stunting. Objective: To design an Android application, “EDDIS-Balita” (Early Detection and Education of Stunting in Toddlers), capable of providing accurate, practical, and easily accessible education and early detection of stunting for the wider community. Methods: This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method with a qualitative approach. System development was conducted using the FAST (Framework for Application of Systems Technology) method, including problem identification, needs analysis, system design, and application construction using MIT App Inventor. The application features include stunting educational materials, stunting screening, stunting status calculation, and a hotline menu. Application testing was carried out using black box testing to assess the accuracy of input and output results. Results: The EDDIS-Balita application was proven to function optimally, with a 100% success rate in all tested features. All educational, screening, and calculation menus operated smoothly and were easy to use by mothers of toddlers, posyandu cadres, and healthcare workers as learning media and early detection tools. Conclusion: EDDIS-Balita is an effective innovation for enhancing community understanding of stunting prevention while facilitating independent and rapid early detection. This application has strong potential to support accelerated stunting reduction through more timely education and intervention. The study recommends further training and socialization for cadres, healthcare workers, and the community to ensure optimal utilization of the application.

Abstract

Background: The postpartum period requires comprehensive and integrated attention to maternal wellbeing, encompassing both physiological and psychological dimensions. During this critical phase, modulation of the immune system plays an essential role in maintaining the balance of CD4/CD8 ratio, which reflects immune competence, while the prevelance of postpartum mental health problems has been reported to reach up to thirty percent. Natural functional beverages, such as ginger-lemongrass formulations containing  whilst postpartum mental health problem prevalence reaches thirty percent. Ginger-lemongrass beverage containing phenolic compounds at a concentration of 267,37 mgGAE/100g and antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 20ppm, demonstrates promising immunomodulatory and protective potential. Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of a combined intervention consisting standardized ginger-lemongrass beverage and the MotherBaby-Care method in increasing CD4/CD8 ratio and improving the mental health status of postpartum Mothers. Methods: This research employed a true experimental design with pretest-posttest control group approach involving forty postpartum mothers who were randomly assigned into four groups : control, ginger-lemongrass beverage only, Motherbaby-Care only and a combination of both interventions. The interventions were administered over a fourteen-day period. Immune status was assessed by measuring the CD4/CD8 ratio using flowcytometry, while mental health status was evaluated using the Self Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20). Results: The result showed that the combination group demonstrated the highest increase in CD4/CD8 ratio (1.748), compared to the MotherBaby-Care (1.328), the ginger-lemongrass (1.206) and control (1.006). Furthermore, the Proportion of mothers without mental health problems increased from seventy percent to ninety percent (p=0.031). Conclusions:The conclusion of this study is the combination of standardized ginger-lemongrass beverage and the MotherBaby-Care method effectively enhanced immune balance and improved mental health status among postpartum mothers, indocating a superior synergistic effect compared to single interventions.

Abstract

Background: The maternal mortality rate in Indonesia remains above the World Bank’s estimated average. Various studies have been conducted to reduce this figure. One such study involves providing aromatherapy to postpartum mothers. Perineal pain is a frequently reported concern after childbirth, which can interfere with a mother’s recovery. The use of lavender and lemon aromatherapy offers a non-pharmacological therapeutic alternative for managing this discomfort. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of lavender and lemon aromatherapy on postpartum perineal wound pain. Methods: The research design used was a pre-experimental study involving two experimental groups. The population in this study consisted of 40 postpartum mothers. Using a purposive sampling technique, 30 women were selected as the research sample. The instrument used was a VAS questionnaire with 4 response scales. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test and Cohen’s d. Results: The results revealed that lavender aromatherapy was effective in reducing postpartum perineal wound pain with moderate (2 hours) and severe (4 hours) criteria. This finding was attributed to lavender aromatherapy’s neuromodulatory effect, which impacted the psyche and caused mild anti-inflammatory effects on the wound. In fact, lemon aromatherapy proved effective with very severe criteria, both for the first 2 hours and the following 24 hours. These results were due to the combination of limbic neurotransmitters with peripheral anti-inflammatory effects, which helped mothers manage stress and other psychological factors during labor. Conclusions: The study concluded that lemon aromatherapy was more effective than lavender because it was richer in citric acid and limonene. The study recommended that future research use a larger sample size and include several covariates to ensure broad generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by heightened emotional and behavioral vulnerability, which may be influenced by increasing exposure to digital devices. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between age, gender, and duration of gadget use and mental health among adolescents. Methods: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 69 twelfth-grade students aged 15–18 years at a vocational high school in Central Java, Indonesia, selected through accidental sampling. Mental health status was assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ-18), while duration of gadget use was measured using a structured self-report questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participant characteristics. Associations were analyzed using Chi-square tests and multiple linear regression to identify independent predictors of emotional strength and behavioral difficulties. Results: High gadget use was significantly associated with abnormal emotional difficulties (93.8%) and lower emotional strength (87.5%). Bivariate analysis demonstrated significant associations between gadget use and mental health outcomes (p < 0.001) and between age and mental health (p = 0.027), whereas gender was not significantly associated (p = 0.117). In multivariate models, gadget use and emotional difficulties remained significant predictors (p < 0.05), explaining 81.2% of the variance in emotional strength (R² = 0.812) and 76.5% of the variance in behavioral difficulties (R² = 0.765). Conclusions: These findings indicate that greater duration of gadget use is associated with poorer mental health indicators among adolescents. Given the cross-sectional design, causal inferences cannot be established. Strategies promoting balanced digital use and school-based mental health support may help mitigate potential adverse outcomes.
