Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how well senior high school students' reading comprehension is improved by the Gallery Walk approach. This study uses an experimental group design, control pretest and posttest, and quantitative quasi-experimental methodology. The sample size for this research consisted of a total of 60 high school students from two classes: 30 students in the experimental class (class X-1) and 30 students in the control class (class X-2). The final results of the experimental class that used the Gallery Walk strategy showed a higher level of reading comprehension, namely 53.33% compared to the control class, only 16.67% of students who succeeded in the test. Statistical analysis revealed significant improvements in post-test scores among students in the experimental group, indicating the efficacy of the Gallery Walk technique. Validity and reliability tests confirmed the robustness of the research instrument. The findings suggest that the Gallery Walk technique fosters active learning, develops critical thinking skills, and enhances reading comprehension abilities among high school students. This study contributes valuable insights into innovative teaching strategies for improving reading comprehension in English education. Beyond the intervention itself, any potential contributing variables to the observed differences between the experimental and control groups should be taken into account when interpreting the results. Keywords: Gallery Walk; Pre-test; Post-test; Reading Comprehension; SHS students.

Abstract

The novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and the short story Surabanglus are two works by Ahmad Tohari (AT) that talk about food and how food becomes the identity of a society. RDP tells the story of how Srintil, the Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, loses her parents due to a massive poisoning in her village caused by tempeh bongrek made by her parents. With very little knowledge of toxicology, the people of Dukuh Paruk "treat" the tempeh poisoning with empirical experience passed down from their ancestors. While Surabanglus tells the story of the friendship between Kimin and Suing which is so touching because Suing had to experience the bad luck of eating poisonous cassava due to unbearable hunger. This research is descriptive and qualitative and uses textual analysis to reveal and interpret the hidden construction in a text. The data collected is analyzed from a gastro-critical lens. Gastro-criticism is part of a critical approach to welcome the phenomenon of culinary literature in literary works. Culinary is chosen as one of the symbols, myths, and signs in the development of literary works. From the data contained in the novel RDP and short story Surabanglus in the form of narrative quotations, and dialog between characters in AT's two works, there are four findings, namely; food and its characteristics, food and socioeconomic status, food and food processing tools, food and medicine. Through these two works, AT not only presents a story with food as the plot, but at the same time, Tohari documents what and how food in a society becomes a symbol and social identity of the community.

Abstract

Several investigations have studied how using Grammarly and QuillBot as paraphrase tools affects EFL students' writing and attitudes. However, students' preferences regarding these tools for paraphrasing students' writing in Indonesia still seem few and have not been explored much. This research aimed to determine which paraphrasing tools undergraduate students prefer for translating their text. This study used a qualitative case study approach. Questionnaires and in-depth interviews were used to investigate students' preferences as data collection tools. Fifteen students were selected by purposive sampling and were administered an online questionnaire. Then, students participated in in-depth interviews and obtained further information from an online questionnaire. The writer then analyzed the data using frequency and thematic analysis. The findings reveal that students prefer QuillBot over Grammarly for three reasons. First, they consider QuillBot to be an easy-to-access and time-saving tool. Second, QuillBot is a paraphrasing tool with various features that help students to paraphrase their writing. Third, QuillBot helps students avoid plagiarism and keep the originality of their writing. However, Grammarly also received high marks because it uses proper grammar when paraphrasing students' writing. Therefore, combining these two paraphrasing tools will make the students' writing process more efficient and effective.
