Abstract

Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone synthesis, growth, and neurocognitive development in school-aged children. This review aimed to synthesize empirical evidence on the relationship between iodized salt exposure and urinary iodine concentration (UIC) among school-aged children and to identify factors affecting this relationship. A structured narrative review with a systematic literature search was conducted using Scopus and PubMed. The search identified 75 records, of which 23 studies were included after duplicate removal, title and abstract screening, and full-text assessment. Study quality was appraised using a JBI-based framework, and findings were synthesized narratively because of methodological heterogeneity. Overall, studies measuring household salt iodine content and UIC in the same population generally showed that adequate salt iodization was associated with better population iodine status. However, the relationship was modified by dietary iodine sources, salt storage and cooking practices, geographical context, and differences in exposure and UIC measurement. Evidence from population surveillance also supported the effectiveness of universal salt iodization while highlighting the risk of both insufficient and excessive iodine exposure. UIC should primarily be interpreted as a population-level indicator, as a single spot urine sample is insufficient for individual diagnosis. Comprehensive iodine monitoring should therefore combine salt iodine assessment, population UIC distribution, and relevant dietary and household factors.

Abstract

Understanding the molecular interactions between natural bioactive compounds and viral proteins is essential for exploring the therapeutic potential of tropical plant resources. This study aimed to investigate the molecular interactions between carotenoids from Pandanus conoideus Lam. and the SARS-CoV-2 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) using an in silico molecular docking approach. The crystal structure of RdRp (PDB ID: 7D4F) was retrieved from the Protein Data Bank and prepared using YASARA-Structure. The docking protocol was validated through native ligand redocking, yielding a root mean square deviation (RMSD) of 1.8285 Å, confirming the reliability of the docking procedure. Eight carotenoid compounds were evaluated and compared with Remdesivir as the reference ligand. Although Capsanthin 3,6-epoxide exhibited the most favorable predicted binding energy (−6.755 kcal/mol), Cryptocapsin demonstrated the most biologically relevant interaction profile by forming hydrogen bonds with the catalytic residues Ser759 and Asp760, supported by hydrophobic and van der Waals interactions. The remaining carotenoids also interacted with the RdRp active site through distinct binding patterns. These findings provide molecular insights into carotenoid–RdRp interactions and highlight Pandanus conoideus as a valuable tropical source of bioactive compounds for early-stage antiviral research. Further molecular dynamics simulations, ADMET profiling, and experimental validation are required to confirm the biological significance of these computational predictions.

Abstract

Adolescence is a vulnerable period for mental health problems, particularly depression, which has been associated with suicidal behavior. Suicide remains a major public health concern among young people, with 1,350 cases reported in Indonesia in 2023.This analytical observational study used a cross-sectional design implicate 306 students selected through stratified random sampling based on grade level (10th, 11th, and 12th grade) with proportional allocation from each stratum. Data were collected using the Indonesian version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R). The BDI-II includes a total of 21 questions that can yield scores between 0 and 63, which are divided into categories of minimal, mild, moderate, and severe depression. In contrast, the SBQ-R features 4 questions that evaluate the risk of suicidal behavior. Both instruments demonstrated good validity and internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.90 for BDI-II and 0.896 for SBQ-R. Data were examined through the application of Spearman's correlation analysis. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between depression and suicidal actions (r = 0.420; p < 0.001), suggesting a moderate connection between these two factors. Among the adolescents at SMAN 2 Mataram, depression was found to be positively linked with suicidal behavior, displaying a moderate correlation; nonetheless, causation cannot be determined because of the cross-sectional study design.

Abstract

Infectious illnesses continue to be a significant health issue around the globe, especially in underdeveloped nations like Indonesia. Salmonella is a type of bacteria that leads to widespread infections. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were 9 million instances of typhoid fever in 2019, causing about 110,000 fatalities each year. Starfruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) is a type of plant that has secondary metabolites capable of affecting the immune system. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of starfruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) fruit extract on the Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) value in mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium bacteria. The method used in this study was a true experimental study with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The collected data were evaluated using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, which included tests for homogeneity and normality, followed by additional analysis with the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The findings of the research revealed that the extract from starfruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) consists of secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and triterpenoids. These secondary metabolites serve as immunomodulators and may influence Neutrophil-lymphocyte Reactivity (NLR), as shown by a statistical analysis (p<0.05) in mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium at doses of 700mg per kg of body weight.

Abstract

Microplastic (MP) contamination in agricultural soils is an emerging anthropogenic threat that disrupts the rhizosphere of horticultural crops. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) play an important role in improving nutrient uptake and stress resilience in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), but their symbiotic relationship may be impaired by plastic residues. This literature review aims to synthesize the mechanisms by which microplastics disrupt AMF–tomato symbiosis and their implications for plant growth and productivity. A narrative-systematic literature review was conducted using Google Scholar, Scopus, and PubMed, covering publications from 2018–2026. Twenty-five relevant scientific articles were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The synthesis indicates that microplastics act as physical and chemical stressors in the rhizosphere. Physically, they alter soil porosity and may damage extraradical AMF hyphae, while chemically, released additives can interfere with root–fungus signaling and reduce mycorrhizal colonization. These disruptions may impair arbuscule formation, water and nutrient acquisition, particularly phosphorus and zinc, and consequently reduce plant biomass and productivity. Reduced AMF protection may also increase tomato susceptibility to soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium. Under severe contamination, nanoplastics may potentially enter root vascular tissues and raise concerns regarding food safety. Overall, microplastic pollution can weaken the ecological functions of AMF–tomato symbiosis and threaten sustainable tomato production.

Abstract

The floodplain areas in Sumatra play a crucial ecological and sociological role for aquatic life and surrounding communities. However, this ecosystem faces serious threats from anthropogenic activities such as land conversion into palm oil plantations, infrastructure development (dams), and industrial pollution. This article conducts a literature review regarding the diversity of migratory fish in various floodplain rivers in Sumatra. The review results indicate that the fish community in these areas is dominated by the potamodromous fish group. The Cyprinidae family was found to have the highest number of species. Conservation data show the presence of species with concerning statuses, including an Extinct (EX) status for Chitala lopis and Endangered (EN) for Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, which correlates with massive habitat degradation. This information is expected to support conservation efforts for sensitive species and maintain connectivity between river ecosystems.

Abstract

Local community knowledge about the utilization of plants in traditional ceremonies is a cultural heritage that is vulnerable to extinction due to modernization. Koto Malintang Village, located in the Lake Maninjau area, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, still strongly adheres to customs and traditions but has not been scientifically documented regarding the use of plants in its traditional ceremonies. This study aimed to identify the plant species, plant parts used, and how they are utilized in traditional wedding ceremonies in Koto Malintang Village. This descriptive research with qualitative and quantitative approaches was conducted from December 2025 to April 2026. Data collection was carried out through semi structured interviews with 20 key informants consisting of panghulu, bundo kanduang, niniak mamak, community members involved in ceremonial processes, and elders, as well as direct observation and documentation. Data analysis used Use Value (UVs), Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC), and Plant Part Value (PPV). The results found 35 plant species from 20 families utilized in wedding ceremonies. The Zingiberaceae family was the most dominant. Leaves had the highest percentage of utilization (29,27%). The highest UVs value was found in turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa L.) at 3,50 and the highest RFC value was found in betel (Piper betle L.) at 1,00. Plants are used as traditional equipment and traditional food ingredients. This study documents the richness of local ethnobotanical knowledge that needs to be preserved and serves as a basis for further research.

Abstract

Tempe is a processed and packaged form of ready-to-eat cuisine. For instance, tempeh chips are a popular variety of tempeh. Tempeh made from different kinds of legumes will have varied sensory and physicochemical properties. This is because the beans have different nutritional compositions, particularly with regard to protein, carbs, and lipids. The goal of this study is to experiment with producing tempeh using a variety of beans, including peanuts, red beans, black beans, cowpea seeds, and other fundamental ingredients. Training in the form of indoor practice is the method employed in this study. Panelists, specifically members of the community present at Flores Bajawa Agricultural College's Education Expo Exhibition Stand, used organoleptic tests to gather tempeh assessments from different kinds of beans. Tempeh products created from pigeon pea seeds, peanuts, red beans, and black beans have a unique taste and perfume similar to ordinary tempeh, but when consumed, they leave a little bitter aftertaste. The community recognizes the innovation. The community usually welcomes the research findings on tempeh products derived from kecipir seeds, peanuts, red beans, and black beans since they are thought to be innovative in raising the economic worth of different kinds of agricultural beans.

Abstract

Vascular Cognitive Impairment and Dementia (VCID) is a spectrum of cognitive disorders associated with cerebrovascular disease and is a major cause of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. This study aimed to review the etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, diagnostic evaluation, and management of VCID to support early detection and appropriate intervention. A literature review was conducted using relevant scientific publications and clinical guidelines addressing VCID. The findings indicate that VCID develops through complex mechanisms involving chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, blood–brain barrier dysfunction, vascular inflammation, impaired brain fluid drainage, and neuronal injury. Major risk factors include advanced age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, smoking, atrial fibrillation, and cardiovascular disease, which contribute to cerebrovascular damage and cognitive impairment. Diagnosis requires comprehensive cognitive assessment, particularly the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), supported by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify vascular lesions and exclude other causes of cognitive decline. Management requires an integrated, multimodal approach involving vascular risk-factor control, appropriate pharmacological therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, physical activity, and family and caregiver support. In conclusion, VCID is a multifactorial disorder with substantial clinical and socioeconomic consequences. Early cognitive screening, optimal management of vascular risk factors, rehabilitation, and increased public awareness are essential to facilitate prevention, early diagnosis, and long-term care while slowing disease progression and improving quality of life.

Abstract

Microplastics can interact with coral surfaces and tissues, yet information on their distribution among structural sections of coral colonies remains limited. This study assessed microplastic morphotypes and abundance in tabulate Acropora colonies from Labuan Beropa waters, South Konawe, Indonesia. Sampling was conducted at two stations representing a densely inhabited fishing area and a site influenced by a river mouth and fishing vessels. Fifteen colonies were selected at each station, and paired 4-cm fragments were collected from the colony tip and near the basal section, producing 60 samples. Organic material was digested using 10% KOH, filtered through Whatman No. 42 paper, and visually examined under a binocular microscope at 40x magnification. Four suspected microplastic morphotypes were recorded: fiber, fragment, film, and foam. Fiber was the dominant morphotype in all station-section combinations. The highest abundance was recorded at the colony tip of Station II (21.2 particles individual-1), whereas the lowest was foam at the same station and section (0.5 particles individual-1). Descriptively, total abundance was higher at colony tips than near the basal sections at both stations. Water temperature was 30 degrees C, salinity was 31 ppt, and current velocity ranged from 0.05 to 0.07 m s-1. The results indicate non-uniform intra-colony distribution and suggest that riverine inputs, domestic activities, and fisheries may contribute to particle exposure. Polymer confirmation, contamination blanks, and paired statistical analyses are recommended for future studies.
