Abstract

Abstract. The aim of this article is to carry out a narrative analysis of Genesis 19:1-14 using Robert Alter's theory of narrative analysis. The story of Lot, the two angels, and the inhabitants of Sodom, is traditionally interpreted as a narrative of punishment for the Sodomites' sin of homosexuality. However, through the narrative analysis carried out it was found that the main crime of the people of Sodom was their violation of the values of hospitality towards strangers. Thus, it can be concluded that the value of hospitality towards strangers, which is part of social morality, is the main value promoted by the Old Testament.

Abstract

Abstract. Not all individuals with same-sex sexual attraction want to express their sexual orientation, there are individuals who actually want to build a heterosexual marriage. There are various reasons that encourage this, including quite a lot of intentions to avoid the social stigma of being an individual with same-sex sexual attraction. However, various studies have revealed that there are positive reasons for marriage, one of which is religiosity. This research was a qualitative research using a case study method on a case of heterosexual marriage as a form of religious coping for a Christian man who identifies himself as religious with same-sex sexual attraction. The study showed that religiosity forms adaptive meanings for him to commit to living married life as a form of religious coping.

Abstract

This paper is a qualitative theological research discussing Dante Alighieri’s (d. 1321) account of LGBT-Q (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) based on his major work, Inferno, with a particular reference to Medieval Christian tradition. Accordingly, this paper used content analysis to apprehend major literature on Dante and LGBT-Q. This paper concluded that the term Sodom and Gomorrah, the cities demolished due to homosexual violation, is apparent in his work. Furthermore, as several Biblical texts also suited the concrete image of those cities, Dante’s Inferno also presented Medieval Christian position concerning homosexuality, which is condemn homosexuality as lust against the role of nature, so it is equated with committing violence against God.

Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of this article is to offer an adaptive attitude as a response to the reality of the diversity of religious life in Indonesia. Religious diversity in Indonesia, on the one hand, requires an attitude of acceptance towards the existence of other religions, but on the other hand, religious truth must also be maintained so as not to fall into an attitude of relativizing the truth. The method used in this study is a literature study method by examining several inclusive teachings from the Bible and the concept of adaptive attitudes. The results of this research showed that the adaptive attitude is a relevant attitude to be developed amidst religious pluralism in Indonesia, because it offers a religious attitude that is able to adapt to the context, but at the same time still maintains religious traditions.

Abstract

Abstract. The Pentecostal mission inherited the way of colonialism in conveying the Good News to humanity. The imposition and universalisation of the doctrine to every tribe, culture, religion, and group is a common way to do it. Conversion from other religions and proselytization from other Christian sects become the achievement and measure of the mission's success. This article examines the mission's authentic meaning that can change the paradigm of conversion and proselytization as the mission's success. I used the perspective of hospitality and theopoetics to construct the authentic meaning of the Pentecostal mission. The research method used is constructive theology by Gordon Dester Kaufman. The research result showed that hospitality contributes to the courage to destroy the dividing walls of tribes, races, religions, and groups. Meanwhile, with inspiration, imagination, sensation, and beauty principles, theopoetics can provide space for little voices and encouragement to carry out social transformation.

Abstract

Abstract. Christmas of Jesus Christ is an annual celebration whose history is often neglected. As an important part of the ecclesiastical calendar, writings about Christmas usually revolve around reinterpreting Christmas theologically. This article will review the Christmas of Jesus Christ from a historical perspective by examining ecclesiastical documents from the past as an effort to find historical evidence regarding the Christmas event of Jesus Christ on December 25. By analizing historical documents, it was showed that Christmas on December 25 was recorded in early church documents and was not merely the result of acculturation from pagan culture, thus making the church have a basis for celebrating Christmas in accordance with Divine time pattern.

Abstract

Many Christian communities in Sumba practice a unique tradition of incorporating lamentation songs in regional languages into their Good Friday services. These poignant melodies, born out of the local Christian community, trace their roots to the ngi'o teki tradition—a practice characterized by the expressive mourning of the departed through carefully crafted and emotional words. Despite the fact that such lamentations diverge from the official Good Friday services outlined in the widely accepted Roman Liturgy of the Catholic Church, they play a significant role in the cultural and religious fabric of these communities. This qualitative research aimed to delve into the historical and cultural context of these lament songs, unveil their theological and inculturative values, and discern their specific place within the Good Friday service. The findings of this research underscored the intrinsic theological and inculturative values embedded in lament songs, emphasizing their crucial role in rendering the Good Friday liturgy more resonant and meaningful for the local population.
