Abstract

The phenomenon of beauty privilege that prioritizes physical appearance as a standard of social acceptance has created gender inequality and psychological pressure, especially for Muslim women in the digital era. Popular culture and social media reinforce visual dominance that places physical beauty above spiritual and intellectual values. In this context, there is a need to review the meaning of beauty in Islam and how the values of piety can be used as a counter-narrative to modern beauty ideology. This study aims to review the concept of privileged beauty from the perspective of the Qur'an using the maudhū'i interpretation approach and critical discourse analysis model of Norman Fairclough. The main data sources consist of verses of QS. Al-Hujurat: 13, QS. An-Nisa: 1, and QS. Ar-Rum: 21–22, accompanied by hadith and interpretations from classical scholars (Ath-Ṭabarī, Ibnu Kathīr) and contemporary (Quraish Shihab, Buya Hamka). This study also involves modern Islamic and sociological literature to understand the socio-cultural dynamics of beauty and identity of Muslim women. The results of the study indicate that piety in the Qur'an is a form of spiritual privilege that is superior to physical beauty. The concepts of qanitat and ḥāfiẓāt lil-ghayb underline the character of faithful women who maintain their honor, obey Allah, and are active in social life. Piety becomes a form of resistance to beauty capitalism and a tool for liberating women's identity from visual pressure. Qur'anic values offer relevant educational and advocacy strategies in building an authentic and empowered Muslim identity in the digital era. This study contributes to the discourse of gender and Islam, by emphasizing that piety is the ultimate beauty privilege in the Islamic paradigm.

Abstract

The Yellow Book Reading Acceleration Program at PP Al Akhyariyah Blega Bangkalan differs from similar programs in Indonesian Islamic boarding schools. This program requires students to fully read and understand the book over a structured timeline divided into three stages: 1) one year to master nahwu sorrof, 2) one year to study the book content, and 3) three years to fully comprehend the *Fathul Qorib* Yellow Book. Graduation each year is mandatory for students who meet the criteria. This study uses the CIPP evaluation model to assess the program. The results show: 1) Context evaluation indicates the program was developed with consideration of local regulations, including the Decree of the Roudlotul Al Akhyariyah As Syafi Foundation; 2) Input evaluation highlights that the curriculum, infrastructure, and supporting tools were appropriately designed by the boarding school; 3) Process evaluation confirms students were informed about memorization and comprehension targets at the start of the program; 4) Product evaluation finds that while the program has been implemented effectively, full success has not yet been achieved, as the quality of students’ reading and understanding of Fathul Qorib requires improvement, especially in accuracy of nahwu sorrof and grammar. The acceleration program is crucial for enhancing students’ personal and social quality, promoting Islamic syi’ar, and instilling moral values and character through habituation in reading the Yellow Book.

Abstract

Abstract

This tradition aims to pray for the deceased and is believed to provide benefits for those who have died. However, this practice has caused debate among scholars and the community. The pro group argues that this tradition is included in charity and beneficial knowledge, while the contra group considers it a bid'ah that has no basis in the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. This study aims to analyze the tradition of reciting the Koran at funerals from the perspective of hadith and to see the social and cultural implications of this practice. This study uses a qualitative approach with hadith analysis and religious ethnography methods. Data were collected through literature studies, in-depth interviews with religious and community leaders, participant observation, and analysis of Islamic documents and fatwas. The results of the study show that there is no explicit evidence in the hadith that directly justifies or prohibits this tradition. Differences of opinion regarding this practice are more based on differences in methodology in understanding the hadith and the principles of bid'ah in Islam. In addition, this study found that the tradition of reciting the Koran at funerals has a significant social function in strengthening community solidarity and maintaining social harmony. The attitude of tolerance applied by the Bireuen community in responding to differences of opinion shows that diversity in religious understanding does not always cause conflict, but can be managed through an inclusive approach. The implications of this study indicate the need for broader education regarding the understanding of hadith and bid'ah so that the community can assess religious practices more objectively. This study contributes to the study of Islam and culture by highlighting how local traditions can adapt to Islamic teachings in a dynamic social context.
