Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of qira’at as an instrument of thematic interpretation, especially in QS. Al-Baqarah verses 196 and 222, and its implications for the istinbath of fiqh law. Using an interpretive qualitative approach with a literature study method, this study examines primary sources such as Jāmi‘ al-Bayān (al-Ṭabarī), Al-Jāmi‘ li Aḥkām al-Qur’ān (al-Qurṭubī), Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb (al-Rāzī), and qira’at literature such as An-Nashr fī al-Qirā’āt al-‘Ashr (Ibn al-Jazārī) and Manāhil al-‘Irfān (al-Zarqānī). The results of the study show that the difference in readings in the wording of al-'umrah (nashab vs rafa') affects the legal status of umrah (obligatory or sunnah), while the readings of yathurna vs yattaharna have an impact on the conditions for the permissibility of postmenstrual husband-wife relations. The integration of qira'at into thematic interpretation shows its potential in bridging differences in schools of thought, enriching legal analysis, and responding to the challenges of contemporary fiqh inclusively. This study confirms that qira'at mutawatir is not only a linguistic source, but also a legitimate epistemic foundation in the development of Islamic interpretation and law.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the understanding of students of the State Islamic University of North Sumatra towards the concept of religious moderation and tolerance-themed hadiths, and to instill them in their attitudes in a pluralistic academic environment. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Informants were selected purposively from various scientific backgrounds relevant to the issue of Islam and interfaith tolerance. The results of the study indicate that most lecturers understand religious moderation within a normative framework, with an emphasis on the values of tawasuth, tasamuh, adl, and musawah. Lecturers with a background in hadith science interpret hadith contextually and inclusively, especially in responding to the pluralistic social reality of Indonesia. In contrast, lecturers from non-hadith fields tend to use a literal approach or ignore the relevance of tolerance hadiths in teaching practices. In the context of academic life, most lecturers show an open attitude towards differences through active participation in interfaith activities. However, challenges are still faced in the form of sectarian bias, lack of lecturer training, and the influence of identity politics. This study recommends strengthening cross-disciplinary disciplines, integration of climate based on maqasid al-shariah and moderation, and institutional collaboration with figures and institutions of different faiths. This study provides an important contribution in the approach to developing living hadith and internalizing the value of religious moderation in Islamic higher education environments as an effort to build an inclusive and peaceful academic culture.

Abstract

This study explores the understanding of Ushuluddin students towards hadiths that emphasize the value of moderation in Islam and its impact on attitudes of tolerance between religious communities. Using a mixed methods approach, this study involved 15 students for in-depth interviews and 50 students as respondents for a quantitative survey. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically to understand students' perceptions regarding moderation, while quantitative data were analyzed using correlational statistics to test the relationship between understanding of hadith moderation and attitudes of tolerance. The results of the study indicate that understanding of hadith moderation plays a significant role in increasing attitudes of moderation and tolerance, and has the potential to prevent the development of extremism among students. Factors such as social environment, interactions with friends, and the role of lecturers contribute to strengthening the understanding of moderation on campus. This study makes an important contribution to Islamic education literature by showing that the integration of moderation values into the curriculum can create a more inclusive and peaceful academic environment. Further research is needed to develop effective educational strategies in preventing radicalization through teaching moderation.

Abstract

The phenomenon of flexing, or the display of wealth on social media, has become a deeply embedded aspect of digital culture, particularly in Indonesia. This behavior reflects not only consumerist and cultural capitalist values but also signals a broader ethical and spiritual crisis in modern society. This study explores the Qur'anic response to flexing by conducting a thematic analysis of relevant verses, based on the exegesis of Muhammad ‘Ali ash-Shabuni in his work Shafwat al-Tafāsīr. The findings reveal that ash-Shabuni condemns flexing as a manifestation of zīnah (superficial adornment), tafākhur (boasting), tabdhīr (wastefulness), and riya’ (showing off), all of which contradict Islamic principles of modesty, gratitude, and social responsibility. Through the interpretation of key verses such as Al-Hadid: 20, Al-Isra: 27, Al-Baqarah: 264, and An-Nisa: 36–37, ash-Shabuni proposes normative solutions centered on spiritual consciousness and ethical consumption. These include the values of qana‘ah (contentment), wasatiyyah (moderation), and respect for social obligations, offering an Islamic ethical alternative to the pressures of digital materialism. This study concludes that ash-Shabuni’s Qur'anic approach provides a transformative ethical framework for resisting performative consumption and promoting spiritual resilience in the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the Qur’anic values of gratitude (shukr) and benevolence (ihsān) toward parents as interpreted by M. Quraish Shihab in his Tafsir al-Misbah, using a thematic exegesis (al-tafsīr al-mawḍū‘ī) approach. The analysis focuses on Surah al-Isrā’ [17]:23–24, which links filial piety (birr al-wālidayn) directly to the principle of monotheism (tawḥīd). By centering the interpretation of Quraish Shihab and contextualizing it within the sociocultural framework of the instant-gratification generation marked by individualism, speed, and emotional detachment. This study is a qualitative study based on library research using the thematic interpretation approach (al-tafsīr al-mawḍū‘ī). The main data were obtained from authoritative interpretation books that were selected purposively because they represent classical and contemporary styles. And applying data triangulation through comparative reading between interpretations and adjustments to empirical findings from sociological and nursing studies on the elderly. This study also adopts the perspective of Jean Watson's Human Caring Theory as an analytical complement to dialogue between Qur'anic values and ethical-spiritual approaches in care. This study explores the contemporary relevance of Qur’anic ethics in strengthening intergenerational ties and elderly care practices. The findings indicate that shukr and ihsān are not merely ethical acts but profound spiritual expressions of faith that must be revitalized in the lived experience of today’s youth. In the context of aging parents, care is viewed as a spiritual devotion that reflects emotional maturity, social responsibility, and personal righteousness. The study also integrates Jean Watson’s Human Caring theory to highlight the compatibility between Islamic spiritual values and holistic caregiving models in modern Muslim families.

Abstract

The ability to think is an important aspect in individuals that can generate extraordinary ideas or suggestions. Students need to be trained in thinking skills to enhance their intelligence. In the subject of Islamic Education, research strategies are considered suitable for enhancing thinking abilities. This aims to develop understanding and increase students' intellectual knowledge of materials related to Islamic education.
