Abstract

This study aims to critically examine Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim through the lens of Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism, focusing on how the novel represents the East as subordinate to Western ideological and moral authority. Employing a qualitative literary analysis, this research explores narrative structure, characterization, and setting to reveal how the novel systematically marginalizes Eastern voices and constructs the East as a passive backdrop for the psychological and moral journey of the Western protagonist, Jim. Key findings show that the Indigenous characters in Patusan are denied subjectivity and interiority, their perspectives filtered entirely through the Western narrator, Marlow. The narrative elevates Jim to a position of moral superiority and leadership, reinforcing colonial myths of the “white savior” and the supposed dependency of Eastern societies on Western governance. The absence of Eastern perspectives in the novel underscores the epistemological dominance of the West, making Lord Jim not a true intercultural dialogue, but a monologue that serves Western self-definition. The study concludes that Conrad’s novel, despite its literary complexity, perpetuates Orientalist discourse by silencing the East and reinforcing hierarchical binaries between the West and the non-West. Future research is encouraged to compare such colonial narratives with postcolonial works that reclaim indigenous voices.

Abstract

The ability to write essays is fundamental in academia, as it helps students articulate their thoughts, construct arguments, and apply critical thinking skills. Nevertheless, numerous second-semester students encounter challenges in mastering this skill, which can negatively affect their academic development. This research aims to examine the specific obstacles and contributing factors experienced by second-year students enrolled in the English Education Study Program at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang. Drawing on the frameworks proposed by Nenotek et al. (2022) and Alfaki (2015), this research adopts a qualitative approach. Sixteen participants were selected using homogeneous sampling, and data were gathered through interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that students faced multiple difficulties in essay writing, particularly in the areas of content, organization, discourse, and mechanics. These difficulties stemmed from various sources, including the complexity of the writing process, low student motivation, inadequate time allocation, infrequent writing practice, and delayed instructor feedback. The findings suggest that such difficulties significantly influence students’ overall academic performance.

Abstract

This study analyzes code mixing patterns and functions in the first episode of the 2024 series Private Bodyguard. Code mixing, a notable sociolinguistic phenomenon, involves speakers switching between languages in conversation. The research aims to understand language dynamics in a broader social context and the role of code mixing in contemporary media. Employing a qualitative approach, data was collected from dialogues in the series via the Viu streaming platform. The study categorizes code mixing based on Muysken's typology: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The analysis found eighteen instances of code mixing. Insertion was the most common type (8 examples), reflecting English's influence on young Indonesians exposed to global culture. Alternation occurred seven times, proving comfortable bilingual switching to emphasize or express emotions. Congruent lexicalization (3 examples) showed seamless integration of words with similar grammatical structures. This study highlights the dynamic interaction between language, culture, and society in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the journey of the main character, Scarlett, in Caraval by Stephanie Garber using Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey theory. It focuses on identifying the stages present in the novel and how they contribute to Scarlett’s character development. This research applies to Joseph Campbell’s (2020) Hero’s Journey theory. The primary data source is Caraval, a fantasy novel by Stephanie Garber. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, as defined by Litosseliti (2010) and Bogdan & Biklen (2007), which focuses on analyzing textual data in depth. The data collection follows Bowen (2009) library research approach and uses Leavy (2017) highlighting technique to categorize relevant text. The analysis applies Campbell (2020) Hero’s Journey framework and follows (Ratna, 2020) descriptive interpretation method to interpret the narrative structure and character development. The findings show that thirteen out of the seventeen stages of the Hero’s Journey are reflected in Scarlett’s journey, while four stages do not appear in the story. These results indicate that Caraval partially follows the traditional Hero’s Journey structure and demonstrates how this narrative pattern can be adapted in modern fantasy literature with a female character.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of figurative language in three songs from Taylor Swift’s Evermore album: “Willow,” “Champagne Problems,” and “Gold Rush.” Figurative language is a crucial element in song lyrics, enabling artists to express emotions and abstract ideas creatively. The study applies Perrine’s theory, which classifies figurative language into five types: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and irony. The data are taken from the official lyrics of the selected songs, supported by repeated listening to capture emotional and contextual nuances. A qualitative descriptive method is used to identify and analyze instances of figurative language. The analysis focuses on how these figures of speech function in expressing emotional depth, storytelling, and thematic complexity. The findings reveal that metaphor and personification are the most dominant types, indicating Taylor Swift’s tendency to convey feelings through implicit comparison and human-like expressions. The study highlights the artistic and literary value of popular song lyrics, affirming that they can be treated as modern poetic texts worthy of academic analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the struggles of Maleficent’s character in Robert Stromberg’s Maleficent (2014) to assert her existence as both a woman and a guardian of nature. It uses Karen J. Warren’s ecofeminist theory, which explains how patriarchal domination connects the oppression of women and the exploitation of nature. The film Maleficent (2014) serves as the primary data source. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through close observation of the film’s narrative, dialogue, and character development. The analysis was conducted using a contextual approach, guided by Klarer’s literary theory and Warren’s ecofeminist framework, particularly focusing on the concepts of the logic of domination, sexism, and naturism. The findings reveal that Maleficent’s resistance through the creation of protective boundaries, leadership of the Moors, and reclamation of her agency mirrors the broader resilience of women and nature under patriarchal systems. The study concludes that the film presents an alternative narrative where healing, protection, and empowerment appear through feminine strength and ecofeminist values.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of toxic masculinity as portrayed in The Boys graphic novel, focusing on the character Homelander. Toxic masculinity refers to harmful behaviors and attitudes—such as dominance, violence, and misogyny—that stem from traditional expectations of masculinity. Using theoretical frameworks by Kupers and Connell, the research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, analyzing all seventy-two issues of The Boys. Data were collected through close reading of the graphic novel, review of existing literature, and examination of dialogue that reflects toxic masculinity. The study addresses two research questions: (1) How is toxic masculinity represented through Homelander’s character? and (2) How does toxic masculinity manifest in gender relations within the story? The findings reveal that Homelander embodies three key aspects of toxic masculinity: misogyny, violence, and dominance. These traits are supported by twenty-two textual examples from the graphic novel. Regarding gender relations, the study identifies three patterns shaped by toxic masculinity: power relations, production relations (control over roles and resources), and cathexis (emotional or sexual attachments influenced by dominance). These are illustrated by seven examples from the text. In conclusion, The Boys uses Homelander to vividly depict toxic masculinity and its harmful impact on gender dynamics. The graphic novel thus serves as a critical commentary on destructive masculine norms in contemporary society.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of directive speech acts found in the movie Thunderbolt. This descriptive qualitative research focuses on the utterances produced by characters in the film, with direct speech acts serving as the main data source. Data were collected through an observational method using a non-participatory technique. The data analysis applied Sudaryanto’s (2015) method of identifying language elements, while the theoretical framework was based on Searle’s (1979) classification of directive speech acts. The findings show that the characters frequently employed directive speech acts to influence others’ actions. Out of 57 identified utterances, 20 were categorized as asking, 15 as requesting, 5 as ordering, 5 as commanding, 5 as giving advice, 5 as begging, and 2 as inviting. The most dominant type was asking. These speech acts were primarily used to give instructions, request help, and express urgency, especially in high-pressure scenes. This research offers insights into the use of directive speech acts in film dialogues and highlights their relevance to real-world communication and interaction.

Abstract

This study examines how gendered power struggles are represented through the female protagonists of Fair Play (2023) and Radioactive (2019). Both narratives center on Emily and Marie Curie who navigate male-dominated professional environments shaped by patriarchal norms and institutional hierarchies. The purpose of this comparative study is to deepen feminist readings of contemporary and historical female figures while fostering critically empathetic engagement with visual narratives. The research utilizes a comparative critical analysis framework, drawing on the theories of Judith Butler, Michelle M. Lazar, and bell hooks to explore how institutionalized misogyny, emotional labor, and resistance are constructed on screen. The findings reveal that both protagonists experience layered forms of marginalization, including workplace bias, emotional burden, and social surveillance. Yet, each asserts agency, Emily through reclaiming her dignity in the corporate world, and Marie Curie through intellectual defiance in academia. This study contributes to feminist film criticism by highlighting the emotional cost of women’s survival within gendered structures and underscoring the need for more intersectional and humanized portrayals of female agency in media.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of the Quizlet application in teaching vocabulary to eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Cikande, Indonesia. The study addressed the persistent challenge of limited vocabulary mastery in English classrooms, where traditional teaching methods often dominate and technology integration remains minimal. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, two classes participated: the experimental group (n = 42) received vocabulary instruction through Quizlet, while the control group (n = 42) was taught using conventional methods. Both groups completed pre-tests and post-tests to measure vocabulary knowledge, including meaning, form, and usage. Statistical analyses, such as normality, homogeneity, and independent sample t-tests, were conducted using SPSS version 30. Results showed that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 54.64 to 83.57, while the control group improved from 66.43 to 75.60. Despite starting from a lower baseline, the experimental group achieved greater gains, indicating a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the two groups. These findings confirm the positive impact of Quizlet on students’ vocabulary learning. The study concludes that Quizlet proved to be an effective and engaging tool for improving students’ vocabulary mastery and recommends integrating Quizlet into English vocabulary instruction to enhance motivation and learning outcomes.
