Abstract

As a corn substitute, cassamore (Cassava – Moringa Mix) is an innovative local feed ingredient based on cassava with a mixture of palm kernel meal, cassava leaf flour and moringa extract processed by extrusion that can destroy antinutrients, improve nutrient content and digestibility. This study aimed to optimize the temperature and water content of the hydrothermal extrusion process, as well as to analyze the effect of extrusion on the physical and chemical characteristics of Cassamore as a corn substitution. The method used is response surface methodology in the statistical application of design expert 13 with extrusion temperature factors of 100, 110, 120 (oC) and moisture content of 16, 18, 20 (%). Further research was carried out for the physical and chemical properties of Cassamore using a complete randomized design (CRD). The results showed that the water absorption index value is significant (p<0.05) with the optimal value located at 100 °C and 20% moisture content, while the water solubility index value is not significant. The values of bulk density, tapped density, and angle of repose on Cassamore after being extruded were smaller than those before being extruded. The bulk density and tapped density values for Cassamore were below corn, while Cassamore's angle of respose was above the corn. Cassamore's specific gravity value after extruding under corn. Chemical properties (Ash, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber) decreased after extrusion, but NFE increased after extrusion. It is concluded that Cassamore has a potency to replace corn. Abstract

Gynura procumbens (Sambung nyawa) has been widely used as a herbal medicine since it is rich in bioactive compounds. Moreover, Gynura procumbens also has become a potential plant that control parasitic nematode infection. The research aimed to investigate the effect of G. procumbens on sheep performance, health status, and methane production. A total of twelve six-month-old lambs (ABW 11.27 ± 2.19 kg) were categorized based on live weight and fed one of feed treatments: wild grasses (40%) and concentrate (60%) (control/P0), P0 + 5% G. procumbens (P1), and P0 + 10% G. procumbens (P2). Feed intake, parasitic infection, and physiological status were measured weekly. G. procumbens at 5% level showed normal respiration rate, but the respiration and heart rates of lambs were abnormal. The 10% G. procumbens increased daily weight gain. G. procumbens addition up to 10% reduced the number of Strongyloides on feces and enteric methane emissions compare to control. It concluded that 5% G. procumbens can be used as an anthelmintic forage by improving health status, performance, and reducing methane emissions of sheep. Abstract

The increase in demand for feed impacts the availability of feed ingredients such as soybean meal (SBM), which is still 100% derived from imports. This study aimed to analyze the factors impacting the import of SBM as a crucial feed ingredient in Indonesia, offering insights for governmental policy-making. Secondary data spanning 2019-2022, encompassing SBM import quantities, price, and quality, were sourced from the Import Service Recommendation System. Additionally, annual feed production data were obtained from the Feed Directorate Information System, overseen by the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Republic of Indonesia. SBM prices were sourced from World Bank online data. The dataset spanned four years (2019-2022), each comprising twelve months, with eight parameters under examination. Multiple linear regression was employed to evaluate the influence of independent variables including price upon arrival in Indonesia (USD), moisture content, protein content, crude fiber content, crude fat content, feed production, and the world price (USD) on the dependent variable of import volume. The results showed that all independent variables significantly affect the volume of SBM imports. Partially, variables like feed production, international prices, prices upon arrival in Indonesia, and moisture content have a significant and negative effect on SBM imports. The coefficient of determination shows that the independent variables explain 66.1% of the import volume of SBM. The study highlights critical factors influencing SBM imports in Indonesia. Effective policies addressing these factors could enhance the sustainability of the poultry farming industry. Key words: animal feed, import, linear regression, soybean meal

Abstract

This study aimed to measure the level of nutrient digestibility in local sheep fed high-energy silage-based feed with added palm oil and coconut oil. Twelve adult ewes thathad given birth with an average body weight of 26.12 ± 3.13 kg and an average initial body condition score (BCS) of 1.7 ± 0.57 were used in this experiment. The basalt ration used was silage complete ration Sorinfer consisting of sorghum, indigofera, and concentrate. The treatments were P0= Sorinfer + 6% soybean meal (control), P1= P0 + 3% palm oil, and P2= P0 + 3% coconut oil. The variables measured included the consumption and digestibility of dry matter and nutrients. The data obtained were analyzed using ANOVA. If the results showed significant differences, further tests were performed using the Duncan test. The results showed that the addition of vegetable oil to the ration was able to increase the consumption of crude fat but decrease its digestibility. The addition of 3% coconut oil (P2) effectively increased the digestibility of organic matter, crude protein, and digestibility of Nitrogen-Free Extract (NFE) compared to controls, while rations with the addition of 3% palm oil (P1) effectively increased the digestibility of crude fiber compared to controls. The digestibility of ration nutrients in the 3% coconut oil addition treatment (P2) was more optimal than the control treatment and the addition of palm oil (P1). Abstract

Zinc (Zn) supplementation is needed by livestock to overcome decreased body immunity due to problems with feed quality and environmental stress that affect their productivity levels. This research aims to analyze the fermentation characteristics of Rhizopus sp. on soybeans as a substrate with different levels of Zn mineral and fermentation times. This study uses a complete factorial design with 4 replications. Factor 1 is the Zn mineral level, namely 0, 400, 800, 1200, and 1600 ppm. Factor 2 is the fermentation time, namely 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 days. The data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and significantly different treatments were further tested with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) in the SPSS 25 program. The results of the analysis indicate that Zn levels ≥800 ppm significantly (p<0.05) inhibit mycelium development on the first day of fermentation. Increasing Zn levels significantly (p<0.05) decreases the average acidity level and significantly (p<0.05) increases the substrate ash content, while fermentation time significantly (p<0.05) increases acidity level and decreases biomass, dry matter content, organic matter, and ash content of substrate. Zn level and fermentation time treatments influence the growth and performance of Rhizopus sp. in transforming soybean nutrients. Key words: fermentation, Rhizopus sp., soybean, Zn mineral

Abstract

The study evaluated the effects of feeding Bawang Dayak (Eleutherine palmifolia) meal in the diet on the hematology profile in quails. A total of 160-layer quails (Coturnix-coturnix japonica strain) aged 8 weeks to 14 weeks were assigned on a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments, 4 replications with 10 quails per replication. The treatments consisted of R1 = diet control, R2 = diet contained 0.1% Bawang Dayak meal, R3 = diet contained 0.2% Bawang Dayak meal, and R4 = diet contained 0.3% Bawang Dayak meal. The variables observed were the hematology profile quail, including erythrocytes, hemoglobin, leukocytes, hematocrit, lymphocytes, heterophils, eosinophils, monocytes, basophils, and the ratio of heterophils to lymphocytes (H/L). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and any significant differences were tested using a post hoc Tukey test. The results showed that the usage of Bawang Dayak meal as a phytobiotic in the diet up to 0.3% did not affect quail blood hematology such as erythrocytes, hemoglobin, leukocytes, hematocrit, leukocyte differentiation and the ratio of H/L. The inclusion of 0.2% Bawang Dayak meal resulted in the H/L ratio being within normal conditions, reflecting its function to maintain stress levels of layer quails. In conclusion, utilization of Bawang Dayak meal in a diet of up to 0.3% does not affect the hematological profile of quail. Key words: bawang dayak, Eleutherine palmifolia, hematology, quail

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of including jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) meal in the ration and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) supplementation on the performance and carcass yield of IPB D1 chickens. Jack bean meal (JBM) contains a high-energy, protein-rich feed ingredient that can substitute soybean meal, though it contains antinutrients such as hydrocyanic acid. Pre-treating jack beans through soaking and peeling reduces these antinutrients, allowing JBM to replace up to 20% of the diet. The inclusion of exogenous enzymes like protease can further enhance nutrient absorption and broiler health. The study involved 240 IPB D1 chickens, divided into four groups: control feed without LAB (J0L0), control feed with LAB (J0L1), treatment feed without LAB (J1L0), and treatment feed with LAB (J1L1). Feed intake, body weight gain (BWG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were measured weekly from weeks 3 to 9, and carcass yields were evaluated at the end of the study. Results showed significant variations (p<0.05) in weekly feed intake, BWG, and FCR across the treatments. Chickens fed JBM had lower (p<0.05) feed intake and BWG but these improved with LAB supplementation. FCR values improved significantly (p<0.05) with LAB supplementation in both control and treatment feeds. Carcass yield analysis indicated that LAB supplementation led to higher (p<0.05) final body weight and carcass yield, while JBM inclusion resulted in lower values (p<0.05). The study concludes that while JBM can negatively affect chicken performance due to antinutrients, LAB supplementation can mitigate these effects, enhancing both performance and carcass yield. In addition, probiotics are beneficial in poultry diets, counteracting antinutritional factors in feed ingredients like Jack bean meal. Key words: antinutrient, chicken health, probiotic, soybean meal

Abstract

Amino acid protection is one of the efforts to improve livestock feed quality. Lysine is one of the limiting amino acids, which is easily degraded in the rumen, and thus requires a protection. This study aimed to determine the effect of protected lysine on cattle's digestive system and ruminal ecology in vitro. This study used encapsulation using xanthan gum and tannin (2% w/v) to protect lysine. The treatments consisted of P0 = unprotected amino acids; P1 = amino acids + 2 g xanthan gum; P2 = amino acids + 2 g tannin; P3 = amino acids + 2 g xanthan gum + 2 g tannin. Parameters observed included nutrient content, chemical activity, degradability of organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP), and rumen fermentability (pH, N-NH3, VFA, gas kinetics, and CH4). A combination of xanthan gum and tannin coatings (P3) resulted in a higher effect (p<0.05) on rumen fermentation compared to others. The Undegraded DM and CP values in the rumen were 48% and 32%, respectively, and in the pepsin-HCl were 15% and 89%. All treatments did not change the rumen fermentability. In conclusion, protected amino acids has a effect on the cattle digestion system without disturbing the rumen ecology. Combining xanthan gum and tannin coatings provides the best results than using a single type of coating. Key words: amino acids, encapsulation, rumen fermentation, tannin, xanthan gum
