Abstract

The availability of contextual and engaging teaching materials is essential for improving the quality of learning, particularly in the IPAS (Natural and Social Sciences) subject. This study aims to: (1) Develop marine literacy-based comic teaching materials for fifth-grade elementary students; (2) Determine the validity and feasibility of the developed materials; and (3) Assess their effectiveness in enhancing students’ marine knowledge, behavior, and attitudes toward the sea. This research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The limited trial subjects were fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 5 Rupat Utara, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, questionnaires, and tests. The results showed that the developed comic teaching materials were highly valid (average score of 94.79%), highly feasible (teacher response 94.28% and student response 94.99%), and effective in improving student learning outcomes (N-Gain score of 0.82, categorized as high). Therefore, the marine literacy-based comic is suitable for use in IPAS learning as a medium that enhances students’ understanding and awareness of the sea from an early age.

Abstract

Traditional architecture often reflects the cultural values, local wisdom, and mathematical thinking of a community. In Meranti Island, traditional Malay houses contain rich geometric elements that have yet to be fully explored in the context of mathematics education. This research aims to investigate the traditional Malay house and architectural designs in Meranti Island a culturally relevant resource for teaching geometry in elementary schools. This study lies in integrating ethnomathematics into the elementary geometry curriculum by utilizing local architectural heritage, which has received limited academic attention. An ethnographic approach was employed to gain a deep understanding of the cultural and mathematical aspects embedded in the traditional architecture. This method was chosen as it allows researchers to capture the contextual meaning and lived experiences of the community through interviews, observations, documentation, and field notes. The findings reveal that traditional Malay houses in Meranti Island incorporate a variety of geometric concepts. Flat shapes identified include squares, rectangles, triangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, and trapezoids, while solid shapes include cubes, cuboids, cylinders, and triangular prisms. These findings demonstrate that traditional architectural elements can serve as meaningful and contextual learning materials for geometry instruction. The practical implication of this study is the development of culturally responsive teaching strategies that connect students' local environments with mathematical concepts. This approach not only enhances students’ understanding of geometry but also fosters appreciation for local culture and identity through mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and validate a pekasam-themed module integrating Riau Malay local wisdom into the Pancasila Student Profile (P5) project. Using a Research and Development (R&D) design with the ADDIE model, the study involved 30 sixth-grade students and three teachers at SDN 012 Lalang Kabung, Riau. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, expert validation, and documentation, analyzed with Aiken’s V for validity and Cronbach’s Alpha for reliability. Findings showed that independence (3.17; 73% high) and creativity (2.97) were strengthened, while collaboration (2.87) and critical reasoning (2.83) remained weaker; student enthusiasm for local culture was very high (4.0). Expert validation confirmed strong content and language quality (0.83) but indicated the need for refinement in visual aspects (0.67–0.75). In conclusion, culture-based project learning effectively nurtures autonomy and identity, though collaboration and critical reasoning require further pedagogical support. This study contributes a practical model of culturally responsive pedagogy aligned with national character education and global deep learning frameworks, with future research advised to test its adaptability across regions and long-term impacts.

Abstract

Conflict is an inevitable aspect of children’s social interaction; however, the manner in which it is managed significantly influences social competence, classroom climate, and long-term behavioural outcomes. This paper presents a conceptual and practice-oriented framework for developing conflict resolution skills in early childhood within Nigerian school contexts. Drawing from social learning theory, socio-cultural perspectives, and peace education principles, the study synthesizes contemporary literature to examine the developmental foundations of conflict behaviour and constructive resolution strategies among young children. Unlike general discussions on school conflict, this paper situates skill development within culturally responsive and school-based pedagogical practices relevant to Nigerian classrooms. It proposes an integrated framework that emphasizes emotional regulation, communication competence, peer mediation, restorative dialogue, and teacher modelling as core components of early intervention. The paper further highlights the role of educators, families, and community structures in fostering sustainable peace competencies. By bridging theory and practice, this study contributes a context-sensitive model for embedding conflict resolution education into early childhood pedagogy, thereby supporting peaceful learning environments and long-term social development.
