Abstract

This study presents an overview of a survey on Cambodian Buddhist monk students’ motivation in learning English at Hun Neng Buddhist Primary School, Kampong Cham Town. The study employed a quantitative method. The study aimed to examine the motivation levels of the participants and the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation levels. 93 Buddhist monk students participated in the study. The findings show that the Buddhist monk students were highly motivated to learn English, and it was also reported that they were more extrinsically motivated than intrinsically motivated. The study also recommends that motivation inside and outside the classroom be carefully considered. It is also recommended that future research be conducted with a larger sample size using other statistical analyses at other educational institutions. Qualitative and mixed-methods designs are also recommended.

Abstract

Many people in the twenty-first century are familiar with technology. The Education? Ministry of the Kingdom of Cambodia has also included ICT subjects in the school curriculum. However, due to the lack of preparation, many Cambodian teachers, especially those living in the countryside, face many challenges with ICT applications and seem unprepared to use ICT in their teaching. The current study employed a quantitative method through survey techniques. It aimed to examine Cambodian teachers' perceptions of ICT use in the classroom, the level of training on ICT, and the challenges of technical support and ICT infrastructure in schools. 109 teachers (25 females) were asked to participate in the study. The results show that all the teachers had a positive attitude toward using ICT in teaching. Although most of them are confident in their ability to use ICT, less than half use it in their teaching. The result also shows that most teachers received training on using ICT, but they possessed only basic computer skills. Most of them reported that having poor access to computers and the internet was their main challenge. Future studies should be conducted using a qualitative or mixed-methods design with similar topics. The study regarding the challenges of implementing an ICT school curriculum provided by MoEYS is also recommended.

Abstract

Assessment is inevitable in education. Formative assessment plays a crucial role in enhancing students' learning and performance. With the growing understanding of the role of formative assessment, many countries in the world have considered formative assessment as the primary mechanism of assessment reform in education. In Cambodia, a shift in focus to formative assessment as its assessment reform aimed at enhancing students has been noticed. The present study employed a quantitative method to examine teachers' and learners' perceptions of formative assessment practices in enhancing learning in Cambodian EFL courses. The participants of this study were 30 teachers (3 females) and 50 students ( 22 males). They are teaching and learning English as a Foreign Language. The results revealed that the respondents have a more positive perception of formative assessment. It highlighted a better understanding of formative assessment concepts, purposes, and development strategies. The results also indicated that participants' perceptions about formative assessment enhance learning in EFL courses through various roles of feedback. The results showed that respondents perceived that it is demanded of assessors or teachers to have higher knowledge about formative assessment to assess students in formative ways. Time-consuming was also perceived as a challenge in formative assessment practice. The findings also revealed that participants were more likely to use formative assessment in their EFL courses in the future. Future studies with many participants, mixed method approaches, and cross-disciplinary research in Cambodia should be conducted in either private or public HEIs.

Abstract

Researchers have explored instructional leadership's correlation with teacher efficacy in developed countries, yet there is no research to broadly study in developing country contexts, especially in the public schools of Cambodia. Hence, the research objective is to find a significant correlation between the instructional leader and the efficacy of Cambodian public lower secondary school teachers. The researcher uses a quantitative method to collect data through a survey questionnaire. Also, the researcher uses the Pearson Correlation coefficient, a tool in SPSS version 23, to find the correlation between the instructional leader and teacher efficacy. There were 100 participants who were public lower secondary school teachers who participated in the data collection process. The key finding points out that the instructional leader has a high positive correlation with teacher efficacy, which is statistically significant. Thus, the instructional leader certainly correlates with efficacy among Cambodian public lower secondary school teachers. The result is significant for instructional leaders and relevant stakeholders in improving teachers' efficacy to fulfill their tasks better than before. Besides, future studies should focus on similar topics with different theories and a larger sample size at other institutions across the country. Finally, future studies should also emphasize qualitative and mixed-method designs.

Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many Cambodian schools and universities have been forced to move their educational activities from face-to-face to online modes. Those universities and schools have been using some online applications like Zoom as their teaching and learning delivery platform. Consequently, there have been challenges to the use of the app. The current study employed a quantitative design, and it was conducted at a Cambodian university with a total of 50 students. The study aimed to investigate those students' attitudes and perceptions toward using the Zoom platform for their online learning. The results showed that the students had negative attitudes toward the use of Zoom as well as low perceptions of using Zoom during the pandemic. Future studies should be conducted with a bigger sample size at other universities across the country. A qualitative study or a mixed-methods design is also recommended. Teachers’ attitudes and perceptions of using Zoom for teaching might also be welcome.

Abstract

This thesis explored the changing perspectives of EFL teachers on continuing professional development (CPD) in the private education sector in Cambodia. As for professional development, Cambodian education is plagued by a lack of well-trained teachers due to insufficient pedagogical instruction within CPD as well as a lack of commitment by teachers. This study applied quantitative research; data were collected by means of the purposive sampling method with descriptive statistical analysis. Fifty Cambodian EFL teachers teaching three private schools in Kandal province were selected. The findings indicated that EFL teachers acknowledged that CPD is crucial and effective to their professional teaching career when they are more engaged in CPD efficiently. The change in perspectives for Cambodian EFL teachers on CPD has been satisfactorily proven to be fruitful and achievable. Future studies could explore more factors influencing EFL teachers' motivation for Continuing Professional Development activities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of labor absorption issues on the unemployment rate in North Sumatra Province from an Islamic perspective. The research method used is quantitative, utilizing secondary data from the Central Statistics Agency of North Sumatra Province and relevant literature. The variables analyzed include Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), population size, provincial minimum wage, education level, and labor absorption. The research findings indicate that GRDP is not intervened by labor absorption concerning unemployment. The population size indirectly influences unemployment, with labor absorption as an intervening variable. Provincial minimum wage and education level directly affect unemployment without being intervened by labor absorption. From an Islamic perspective, balancing these labor factors to reduce unemployment and achieve socio-economic justice in North Sumatra Province is important. These conclusions have several important implications. First, there needs to be attention given to regional economic growth to impact labor absorption positively. Second, wise population management is crucial to optimize job availability. Third, provincial minimum wage and education level play a significant role in reducing unemployment. Fourth, applying Islamic values in managing labor, including ethical and just aspects, is important. These implications are expected to provide guidance and recommendations for the government and stakeholders in addressing unemployment issues in North Sumatra Province.

Abstract

Social media is a technological advancement in information and communication used by people of all ages and around the globe. Even though social media platforms were not initially designed for education, they have captured the attention of some educators, particularly those who teach and study the English language. This study aimed to determine what kinds of social media English students at the State Institute of Islamic Studies Takengon utilize and how social media assists students in learning English. In this study, a descriptive-qualitative methodology was employed. The researcher used open-ended response surveys, interviews, and written records to collect data. This research utilized data analysis techniques involving data reduction, presentation, conclusion, and verification. To ensure the validity of the information, the writer employed both reliability and source triangulation mechanisms. According to the findings of this study, students improved their English skills by utilizing eight different social media platforms, including Blogger, Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. In comparison, most students prefer media-sharing platforms (MMS) to social networking sites (SNS) to enhance their English skills. Students mainly use social media features such as viewing videos, listening to podcasts, and conversing with native English speakers. In addition, they also utilize personal chat, group chat, comment sections, photos, descriptions, stories, and biographies to enhance their English skills through peer interaction. The study's conclusions may have an impact on curriculum development, instructional strategies, and educational policies that support language acquisition and cross-cultural communication in digital environments, both within and outside of Gayonese universities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the attitude of Central Aceh society towards religious differences. Central Aceh is a region with significant religious diversity, with the majority of the population adhering to Islam. However, religious differences can also be found within the Central Aceh society, such as Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism. This study employs a quantitative approach by collecting data through a survey conducted among 300 respondents representing the Central Aceh community. The survey instrument used is a reliable measurement scale of tolerance attitudes. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The analysis results show that, overall, the Central Aceh society exhibits a relatively high level of tolerance towards religious differences. The majority of respondents express respect for the right of every individual to choose and practice their own religion. However, there are several interesting findings regarding the factors influencing tolerance attitudes. Factors such as education, interreligious interaction experiences, and understanding of human rights significantly influence the tolerance attitudes of the Central Aceh society. This research contributes significantly to the understanding of tolerance attitudes in the Central Aceh community and provides insights for stakeholders, including the government and educational institutions, in developing programs that promote more inclusive and respectful tolerance attitudes among communities with different religious backgrounds. The policy implications derived from this research are expected to enhance harmony and inter-religious coexistence in Central Aceh, as well as foster sustainable social development processes.
