Abstract

Few studies have focused on how Arabic-speaking students' L1 interference affects the stress they assign to English. This study investigates whether Arab learners' incorrect stress attribution is random or systematic. The research also intends to determine whether there is a connection between the phonotactic rules of stress placement in Arabic and the stress misplacement that Iraqi learners of English experience. At random, sixty students from three different English proficiency levels at Al Anbar University: lower-intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced. All of the morpho-syllabic word structures the students often mispronounced were included in the 50 stimulus words the teachers had them say. The recordings were analyzed by two independent raters and Praat spectrogram software. Research indicates that learners may have been influenced by other languages to do the following: a) consistently stress one syllable even though the word has different meanings depending on the other stress assignments; b) Misplace stress regardless of their level of English competence; c) Stress the penultimate syllable in the majority of polysyllabic words; d) Stress the second syllable in contracted negative auxiliary verbs; and e) Stress the second item in a compound noun rather than the first item in the composite noun.

Abstract

Kalila and Dimna, a renowned international literary heritage, has been embraced by various cultures, as evident in its numerous translations worldwide. In this comparative study, we delve into the Arabic text of The ring-necked dove story and its Persian translation, aiming to uncover the cultural nuances and additions introduced by Nasrallah Munshi. Our research, guided by Mona Baker's Framing theory, is based on the version by Abd al-Wahhab Azzam and Taha Hussein for the Arabic text and Mojtaba Minavi's version from the University of Tehran Publisher for the Persian text. The story under scrutiny involves a flock of pigeons trapped, but they escape through cooperation and the aid of a rat. Our descriptive-analytical approach compares the Arabic and Persian texts, revealing the translator's additions and potential justifications. The results highlight a shift in responsibility from the ring-necked dove to the flock of pigeons, a significant finding in this story's cultural adaptation. On the other hand, between the lines of the Arabic text, there is an emphasis on the necessity of cooperation to eliminate disasters. However, in the Persian text, we find an insistence on values such as sacrifice and altruism, as well as the role that lack of attention to the leader's orders plays in the occurrence of disasters and misfortunes, as well as the effect of the wisdom that the leader possesses in That's it, people. In other words, the translator is trying to exaggerate the role of the leader in saving his nation. At the same time, Ibn Muqaffa focuses on cooperation's role in achieving this salvation. This study helps researchers know the differences in Arabic stories and their translation into various international languages while introducing the Arab literary heritage to students.

Abstract

This article helps bridge the gap left unfilled in the analysis of serialization in classical Arabic of the pre-Islamic period and what follows it on the one hand and between English and classical Arabic on the other. This article's premise is that serialization can be hypotactic or paratactic, where the clausal structure in both types differs. Under the theoretical concept of Raising, adapted from the generative transformational model, this feature is treated in a comparative/ contrastive fashion in both English and Arabic to determine the points of convergence and divergence and how the referential and referential interpretation is conducted by applying the  PRO element. Theoretical analysis is maintained by traditional examples from Qur'anic texts and other devised examples that serve the purposes of relevant analysis.

Abstract

Technology in learning Arabic grammar can help students understand more easily and with fewer difficulties. Infographics are one of the alternatives of today's technology that aim to make learning information simple, exciting, and easy to understand. This study focuses on students' views on the need to develop web-based interactive infographic modules in learning Arabic grammar. This study uses the Design and Development Research approach. Researchers used questionnaire instruments to obtain analysis data related to learning materials, learning approach issues, the tendency to utilize innovation, and the need to use interactive infographics. A total of 205 students from Bachelor of Arabic Studies, UniSZA, who had taken Ibn Aqil's Syntax Text study, were made to be respondents that answered the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software to obtain the mean and standard deviation. Interactive infographic content can attract students to understand complex lessons, and it should be developed.

Abstract

While curriculum-based measurement (CBM) accurately indicates reading skills, such as progress monitoring and early detection of reading difficulty, it has yet to be developed for Arabic. This study aimed to develop and validate a curriculum-based measurement for oral reading fluency (CBM-ORF) tailored to assess Arabic language students' reading abilities and create preliminary norms for students from second to sixth grades. Methods and Procedures: Various forms of the CBM-ORF were developed and administered to a sample of 414 students. After data analysis, the students' readings were rated by teachers to compare the CBM-ORF with an independent measure. Outcomes and Results: The results indicate that the CBM-ORF exhibits strong reliability and validity, making it a valuable tool for monitoring progress and identifying reading difficulties in Arabic readers. Furthermore, ORF norms have been established and proposed. Conclusions and Implications: This study emphasizes the absence of a valid reading tool for Arabic language students. It offers resources for teachers to make data-driven decisions, especially for students with learning disabilities.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the morphological errors made by Arabic language learners who are native speakers of other languages while learning the ten Arabic verb forms (weights). The study employed a quantitative approach to achieve its objectives. The study sample was conveniently selected and consisted of 123 third and fourth-year students majoring in Arabic language studies at the College of Languages and Communication at Sultan Zain Al-Abidin University. A questionnaire was prepared to achieve the study's objectives, and a test was conducted to measure the student's ability to recognize and extract the ten verb forms from texts and differentiate between them. The results showed that the most common errors made by Arabic language learners about the ten verb forms were in their writing skills and were of a high degree. The results also revealed differences among the study community members in recognizing the ten morphological forms attributed to academic level, with these differences favoring the fourth year. The study results indicated no statistically significant differences in identifying the ten morphological forms attributed to gender.
