Abstract

The Design and Development Research (DDR) approach is an increasingly employed research method by education researchers, as it aims to produce a product through specific stages. Therefore, this study aims to explain and detail the design and development aspects of an Arabic language camp called the Academic Arabic Language Camp (KeMBAA), which utilizes the Design and Development Research approach (DDR). This language camp targets the participation of new postgraduate students in the religious studies department at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, National University of Malaysia. Developing and implementing KeMBAA is an effort to design, develop, and execute a product that incorporates DDR elements such as multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, mixed methodologies, cycles, and various other components. KeMBAA aims to provide an Arabic language learning experience in an interactive and enjoyable environment for students who are accustomed to traditional Arabic language teaching methods, which require a new touch through more impactful innovation. This study employs the DDR approach, executed through three main phases: the needs analysis phase, the design and development phase, and concluding with the assessment phase. The study's findings present the key features of KeMBAA, alongside the foundational design principles, as an innovation in Arabic language learning for Islamic Studies students. The framework for developing KeMBAA is expected to serve as a reference for Arabic language teaching innovation, particularly for researchers in Arabic and foreign languages.

Abstract

Previous researchers, such as (Ahmad, 2017) (Maasiri, 2012), (Yusuf K. , 2019) and (Thayyib, 2017) have found consistent evidence that Malay learners often pronounce certain Arabic words not as native speakers do but in a way they get used to hearing those since their childhood. We offer a method for training the pronunciation of Arabic words using natural sounds. It employs the sounds from oneself and the natural or automatic sounds closest to the sounds to be instructed. This is a new model in Arabic pronunciation training for Malay communities in Southeast Asia through error analysis, contrastive studies, and observations. We argue that it is essential for those teaching or learning Arabic to develop linguistic proficiency and skills in correct pronunciation. It is also helpful for training in Qur'an recitation. We create this method using the literacy development, reflection, design, and development (R2D2) model. Three points are highlighted: (1) common errors in the pronunciation of Arabic sounds among the Malay communities in Southeast Asia concern the following sounds: tha, ha, kha, dha, shen, sad, dhaad, ain, ghain, fa, dan qaf., Ta, dan Dha; (2) the training includes three techniques: al-Muhaakat Aliyah (imitation of human-made sounds), al-Muhaakat Thabiiyyah (imitation of nature sounds), and al-Muhaakat bi an-Naathiq al-Ashly (imitation of Arabic native speakers); (3) video recordings are used to demonstrate the techniques for non-attending trainees.

Abstract

Sibawayh is the pioneer in grammar and morphology, and his book forms the basis for many subsequent Arabic books. Incorrect attributions could transfer to later grammatical works, leading to erroneous judgments and attributions of opinions. He understands Sibawayh's opinion through his book and observes his statements, evidence, and explanations. The aim is to pave the way for authenticating the views of prominent scholars who influenced the development, foundation, and refinement of Arabic, especially in books composed after the 5th century Hijri. The researcher endeavored to collect examples from some leading figures in Arabic studies who encountered such discrepancies. The results: most of the opinions that should have been attributed to Sibawayh resulted from scholars needing to understand Sibawayh's phrases and intentions, issuing judgments based on the apparent understanding rather than the actual context. Some opinions attributed to Sibawayh outside his book pertain to lost books like 'Al-Wadih' and 'Al-Basit.' This indicates missing links in specific passages of the book, prompting scholars of Sibawayh's heritage to examine and attempt to fill these gaps, which undoubtedly will contribute novelty to the book and its texts.

Abstract

This study investigates the intricate realm of puns, a linguistic feature characterized by its multifaceted meanings and significant role in enriching religious texts. Puns present a unique challenge in translation, especially within the context of the Holy Qur'an. To examine these challenges, this study employed Newmark's approach, selecting ten purposive puns from the Holy Qur'an for analysis. AI first translated each selected pun and then subjected to two rounds of editing by professional translators to enhance linguistic precision and stylistic elegance. A qualitative analysis was conducted to assess the extent to which the AI-generated and post-editing translations captured the intended meanings of the puns. The findings reveal that while AI translations provide a competent foundational interpretation of the text, they often need more depth to fully encapsulate the puns' dual or layered meanings. Human post-editing significantly refines these translations, enhancing linguistic accuracy and embracing the puns' aesthetic and theological richness. However, the accuracy in conveying the puns' intended meanings varied, with not all post-edited translations fully capturing the intricate balance of literal and metaphorical interpretations. The study underscores the vital synergy between AI and human expertise in achieving translations that balance accuracy with aesthetic appeal.

Abstract

The study of religious moderation is still a widely discussed topic. The study of religious moderation emerges with moderate values as knowledge that does not contain violence, extremism, and false doctrine, ines of religion in society. However, amid the polemic of extremist ideologies, Islamic boarding schools come with a unique learning system. For example, learning Arabic in Islamic boarding schools can lead students to understand the meaning of moderation in society. The moderate values in the books and the slogans and mottos of the Islamic Boarding School are easily understood and implemented by the students daily. This paper aims to convey and reveal the values of religious moderation in Arabic language learning at Islamic Boarding Schools in Lampung. They are written qualitatively, analyzing several textbooks and slogans in Islamic boarding schools. Based on the results of the analysis of Arabic language learning, the meaning of moderation in Islamic boarding schools that are actively learned by students, such as nationalism, tolerance, tawazun, and fairness, are seen in students' learning and daily activities. The manifestation of moderation values shows that the Islamic Boarding School in Lampung has carried moderate values since its inception and can become an intermediary to maintain societal harmony.

Abstract

This study examines Julian Rotter's approach to behaviorism on the locus of control related to its application in learning Arabic. This study seeks to complement the shortcomings of previous studies that were not discussed, namely the behaviorism approach in learning Arabic from the perspective of Julian Rotter's theory. The theory of behaviors by Julian Rotter suggests that there are four aspects of Locus of Control, namely: potential behavior, expectations, values of reinforcing elements, and psychological situations. This research uses a qualitative approach with the literature review method. A literature review is a method of studying library sources to obtain research data. The results of this study show that all aspects of Locus of Control can be applied to motivate students further to learn Arabic. Regarding learning, locus of control can be an alternative to enrich perspectives in learning guidance procedures to address students' learning difficulties. This is inseparable from two factors influencing students' learning difficulties: internal (psycho-physical) and external (social) factors. Following the described findings, reorienting the locus of control in managing student learning difficulties systematically and comprehensively can be an expected format to help accurately diagnose students' learning difficulties so that programmed intervention steps can effectively assist students in solving their problems. The process includes case identification, problem identification, diagnosis, prognosis, remedial/referral, evaluation, and follow-up. All these stages are carried out by integrating the locus of control system

Abstract

Maharah al-qawaid al-Arabiyyah is very important for students to achieve in order to have a good impact on language skills. Therefore, the main goal of the study is to produce a Maharah al-Qawaid al-Arabiyyah model based on the sequence of student mastery in the teaching of Arabic grammar. This study uses a qualitative research design by focusing on the case study method of various places. In order to achieve the objective of the study, a sentence construction test for students at SMKA, SABK and SMAN was conducted to identify the order of student mastery in learning Arabic grammar by using purposive sampling. Next, an empirical study was conducted on selected religious high school teachers to obtain teachers' views on the Arabic grammar sequence that is easy and difficult for students to master in learning Arabic grammar. It was then followed by the development of the Maharah al-Qawaid al-Arabiyyah model based on the sequence of student mastery in the teaching of Arabic grammar. The results of the study found that there is a sequence of easy and difficult mastery in learning Arabic grammar. The difficulty of students in mastering Arabic grammar is due to several factors, namely students’ confusion in the use of Arabic grammar method, difficulty in the Arabic grammar method, students' weakness in understanding Arabic grammar which is due to lack of practice in conversation as well as the fact that the Arabic language TnL and syllabus used lacks emphasis on several aspects of Arabic grammar. This model will be a reference for stakeholders such as the Ministry of Education Malaysia as well as educators to improve the TnL of Arabic grammar in line with the vision and mission of the MOE to produce a quality education system to develop the potential of skilled individuals in the Arabic language.
