Abstract

This study aims to identify teaching methods and student demographic differences that may contribute to students' achievement in mastering Arabic oral proficiency. The study used two qualitative approaches based on interviews with students involved in teaching Arabic using structured questions. Respondents were selected according to their achievement level based on an evaluation by lecturers who taught them. The quantitative approach is also cross-sectional, using questionnaires to collect data. The sample consisted of first-degree students in UiTM who are taking the subject of Arabic as a third language. A total of 257 students responded to the survey. The findings show that specific teaching methods contribute to Arabithec language students' oral proficiency, while demographic factors also provide significant results. Gender and education experience also have a substantial effect on students learning Arabic. This study suggests that varied teaching methods were applied to teach Arabic as a third language, particularly in UiTM. In teaching and learning languages, especially Arabic as a third language, various teaching methods are used to ensure that students master the required language skills, such as oral skills. Teaching methods should consider demographic factors that contribute to students' oral skills.

Abstract

Understanding the secrets of language and the methods used by Arabs in their speech helps comprehend the intended meaning of the Prophet's words: peace be upon him. This research aims to develop a conceptual framework and proposed strategies and mechanisms for understanding the Prophetic Tradition based on linguistic knowledge. It also seeks to demonstrate the role of the objectives of Arabic grammar in understanding the Prophetic Tradition and introduce modern grammatical theories and their role in understanding the Prophetic Tradition. The research adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, and its findings indicate that understanding the objectives of Arabic grammar assists in comprehending many problematic aspects found in some narrations. The results: the lack of knowledge of the external context of a hadith leads to misconceptions, and the theory of textual grammar contributes to understanding the meanings of the Prophetic Tradition. The indirect style in language also aids in identifying the purpose and intent of the Prophetic Tradition. The researchers recommend conducting serious linguistic studies on linguistic expression and meaning, examining their characteristics and roles in elucidating the legal objectives of the Prophetic text, as they are essential in deducing juristic rulings.

Abstract

Having problems expanding vocabulary in a foreign language is one of the most common worries among students. Teaching students the right approach to learning is one way to assist them in overcoming this issue. Nevertheless, teachers must first be aware of the diverse vocabulary learning strategies used by students with varied preferences before disclosing the specific strategies to them. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the types and levels of vocabulary learning strategies employed by students of different genders. Furthermore, it investigates whether there were significant differences in the use of strategies based on gender. The data was gathered using a vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire from 220 Arabic foreign language learners at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perlis Branch, Malaysia. The findings showed that male and female students used strategies at a moderate level. The dictionary strategy was the most frequently used among male and female students. However, these two groups of students utilized different least used strategies: metacognitive strategies for male students and practice strategies for female students. The findings also revealed no significant difference in the overall use of vocabulary learning strategies based on gender. This shows that the pattern of strategies used by male and female students was almost the same. Thus, educators can expose students to a variety of vocabulary learning strategies that serve as reinforcement from the beginning to help students' memory (memory strategies), improve their language skills (practice strategies), and manage their progression in vocabulary learning (metacognitive strategies).

Abstract

This study investigates cases of language 'policing' as educational language policies and how these are represented across different policy levels. Focusing on Indonesian schools and using discursive approaches to language policy as a theoretical framework, I critically examine institutions' motivations and justifications for designing and implementing policies whereby non-standardized forms are 'banned' and how these are reported in metalinguistic discourse. Drawing on a range of data, including media discourse, policy documents, teacher interviews, and linguistic landscapes, I textually trace how educational language policies (re)produce prescriptive and linguist ideologies, often using metaphors of crime and often using language as a proxy for social factors such as academic achievement, employability, and standards. Overall, micro- and meso-level language policies are a partial product of linguistic conservatism in current macro-level educational policy. (Language policy, language policing, schools, language ideologies).

Abstract

Islamic Banking Study Program STEBANK Islam Mr. Sjafruddin Prawiranegara is a private Islamic religious higher education institution with two credits in Arabic language learning as one of the instruments used to achieve a graduate profile. The learning achievement target with the weight given is very minimal; therefore, in order for Arabic language learning to be effective and efficient, independent learning needs to be designed which is supported by an online system that provides learning freedom; this is as recommended by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Religion. This descriptive qualitative research describes the design of online Arabic language learning based on independent learning in the Sharia Banking study program at STEBANK Islam Mr. Sjafruddin Prawiranegara. The results show that although independent learning tends to be directed at skill mastery in non-formal education, the principles can be applied to formal education by providing limits in the form of competency mastery targets with a time duration determined by the institution that learners must adhere to with a learning system that provides flexibility in time and place.

Abstract

This research addresses the concept of competence in linguistics and the essential stages it has gone through since its manifestation at the hands of the linguistic scholar Chomsky until it reached the stage of stability and application. Subsequently, this research analyzed the concepts of competence and performance according to Chomsky and set forth its most essential characteristics according to his perspective. Then, it elucidated the most critical aspects of criticism that the subsequent linguists directed to his concept of competence, citing the essential alternatives they presented to understand this concept. Moreover, the research also treated the idea of communicative competence developed by Dell Hymes as the most prominent alternative to Chomsky’s competence. The research expounded his concept and explained its components and the differences between it and Chomsky’s competence. Furthermore, it explained the criteria that Hymes adopted in measuring the speaker’s competence and his ability to evaluate the performed speech. Consequently, the research dealt with developing communicative competence among those who succeeded Hymes. Hence, this research introduced the sub-competencies that constitute communicative competence according to Canale and Swain and showed their impact on applied linguistics. After that, it dealt with Bachman’s attempt to develop communicative competence through the model he presented under linguistic communicative ability. Finally, the research dilated the model introduced by Celce-Murcia and her colleagues, which is based on the intersection of communicative sub-competencies in discourse competence. The research results showed that the concept of competence passed through several stages that developed and spruced up its characteristics and contributed to stirring it from the theoretical basis to the applied framework. Moreover, Chomsky’s concept of competence differed from that of his successors among the linguists, whose criticisms were more constructive, which led to the development of the idea and made it applicable.

Abstract

This study is about the al-Khabar language register found in the verses of the two-way dialogue in the Qur'an. The dialogue applies question-answer between two parties. Al-Khabar is a speech that has the probability of authenticity or falsity. This study explores the delivery method of al-khabar by the Qur'an dialogue process and analyzes its functionality. The analysis is carried out using a qualitative approach using the theory of al-Jurjani (1994), al-Hashimi (1994), and al-Samarra'i (2000) as the basic framework of analysis. The findings show that not all bilateral dialogues in the Qur'an begin with the first level and end with the third level. There is a dialogue that only uses ibtida level, level of talibi and inkari, and level of ibtida', talibi dan inkari. The findings also show that the nominal sentence or jumlah ismiyyah is used in verses in the form of Divine recognition. In contrast, the jumlah ismiyyah and jumlah fi'liyyah are used in attitude, behavior, and actions. For underscoring eternity, the al-Khabar register also uses the al-Shart wa al-Jawab language style.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the phonological errors of students at the Yogyakarta Fathul Huda Islamic Boarding School in the pronunciation of hijaiyyah letters (halqi letters). This qualitative descriptive research uses data collection techniques such as structured interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis used reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The validity of the data through source triangulation techniques. The results of this study indicate that student’s phonological errors are in three aspects, such as the phonetic change in the letters غ-خ-ع-ه. Meanwhile, the phonological errors in the aspect of phoneme reduction are in the pronunciation of the words ضَارٌّ - ضَرٌّ, صَارُوْخٌ - صَرُوْخٌ, عَالَمٌ - عَلَمٌ, غَابَةٌ - غَبَةٌ, حَاسُوْبٌ - حَاسُبٌ, رَحِيْمٌ - رَحِم. And the phonological errors in the element of phonemes addition are in the words يَضْحَكُ – يَضْحَاكُ. Deviations occur due to several factors, including ignorance of the pronunciation of Arabic letters, interference from different dialects of the mother tongue, and the lack of communicative Arabic teaching. To overcome phonological errors of students or speakers, some of the researchers' suggestions include practicing the pronunciation of Arabic letters and letters according to the meaning of the letters and the lengths of vowels and intonation.

Abstract

Changes in the morphological construction of Arabic words (wazn al-ṣarf) produce new meanings, often making Arabic learners fall into translation errors. While the existing books on ṣarf (Arabic morphology) have explained these meanings narratively, the learners have yet to face a massive problem in tracking these morphological construction-based meaning changes. Therefore, as a novelty offered, this research aims to identify the changing meanings based on the varied morphological constructions and represent them in a didactic poetic arrangement to ease learning and memorization. The development design is organized based on 4D procedures (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Several morphological constructions of Arabic words and their resulting meaning changes were identified in the defining stage. The design stage was concerned with determining the prosodic form of naẓm (didactic poetic versification, ʽarȗḍ) with which the identified meaning changes of the varied morphological constructions of words were composed and devising the procedures by which this composed naẓm was tested to validate its utility in helping learning and memorization processes, in terms of its feasibility, media appearance, and teaching steps. In the developing stage, the prosodic form of Rajz was chosen to compose the naẓm, and an Android-based application was selected as the learning medium. Finally, in the disseminating stage, the produced application was uploaded to the Google Play Store, which learners, teachers, and validators can download for testing and use. The research produced a naẓm consisting of 9 chapters of morphological word constructions and 32 verses. The validation test suggested a very good qualification (87,61%), with some revisions in certain parts. As such, the product of this research is recommended to be used by both teachers and learners of Arabic to comprehend and memorize more effectively the different meanings of various morphological constructions of Arabic words using a naẓm.
